2 Project Statement The owners of this 100 year-old home needed a new kitchen and wanted to restore it to the original character of this classically-inspired craftsman. With grown children living nearby, they wanted a space that would not only be a long-awaited realization of their dream kitchen, but a central gathering place for three generations. Before the remodel the kitchen was divided into a small eating area with a semi-separated scullery. A dropped ceiling and a small swing door to the back stairs made the spaces feel even more cramped. The new design removed dividing walls and raised the ceiling back to 9 feet. A simple and practical rectangular plan around a central island reorients the space toward the outdoors and the new classical stair landing. Honed Carrara marble countertops and Shaker style cabinet doors reinforce the craftsman/classical theme. White walls and cabinets provide a calm backdrop for the accents of bold color provided by the exposed brickwork and the dark blue china cabinet. Significant elements of the project: Exposing the brick chimney of the dining room fireplace Raising the ceiling back to the original 9 foot height Replacing the old flooring with oak wood flooring and mahogany accent strips to match the rest of the house Improving the connection to the outdoors by adding a substantial set of mahogany doors Matching the wood floor to the rest of the house with perimeter inlay strip Adding additional coats of sealer providing additional durability. Honed marble countertops A bow front farm sink Un-laquered brass plumbing, drawer pulls and lighting fixtures that will patina over time The walnut butcher block island with matched end grain High-efficacy LED recessed lights, uplights and undercounter strips that save energy.

4 Before the kitchen sink area was confined with a partition wall and was poorly lit. The kitchen was outdated and dysfunctional and there was no space for family to gather.

5 After Raising the ceiling back to the original 9 foot height creates more cabinet storage and elevates the sight lines. Honed marble countertops add to the classical feeling and provide a practical surface for bakers.

6 Before the cramped stove area and the seating opposite to it created a tiny workspace in which to maneuver. The walled-over protrusion in the corner was the covered up dining room fireplace chimney.

7 After Exposing the chimney brickwork of the dining room fireplace creates a bold and rustic counterpoint to the elegant and traditional cabinetry.

8 Before cabinet hardware is outdated.

9 After Un-laquered brass plumbing and lighting fixtures will patina over time, as will the classic card catalog cabinet drawer pulls. A simple and practical rectangular plan around a central island reorients the space toward the outdoors and the new classical stair landing.

10 Before the floor plan was chopped into small areas with the extended half-wall and was not conducive to visits from nearby family. The beautiful garden out back was accessed by a single doorway and small porch.

11 After the half-wall was removed and the connection to the outdoors is improved by adding a substantial set of mahogany doors linking the kitchen to newly added classical stone steps.

13 After the extended wall is removed creating an open space. A bow front farm sink gives maximum utility and comfort for hand washing.

14 Before looking towards the dining room from a kitchen that is divided into small areas with the use of several partial walls.

15 After All partial walls were removed creating one large kitchen space. High-efficacy LED recessed lights, uplights and undercounter strips are installed throughout the kitchen and save energy.

16 After The walnut butcher block island with matched end grain creates a subtle kaleidoscopic effect.

17 After Matching the wood floor with perimeter inlay strip ties the space to the rest of the house. Adding additional coats of sealer provides additional durability. This new kitchen has room for 3 generations of family to gather which was at the top of our client s must-have list.

18 Before outdated cabinets.

19 After outdated cabinets were replaced with classic custom cabinetry. The refrigerator is built-in to another wall of cabinets optimizing storage space.

20 After the custom china cabinet painted a bold dark blue adds color to the new kitchen and is a showcase for family treasures.

21 Before a small counter with seating in front extends into the center of the kitchen space. The counter faces the stovetop leaving a cramped walking area. Linoleum flooring added to the outdated look.

22 After work flow is much improved and access to the stove, refrigerator and storage is easy. The old linoleum was replaced with oak wood flooring to match the rest of the house.

23 Before a small eating area was portioned off and was cramped. The lighting was stark.

24 After the partition was removed to create an open kitchen space that is light and airy.
