Ascension Senior Housing adaptive reuse of an existing church and parish hall into affordable senior housing. conceptual phase lower level The challenge of this project is the grading of the site and how to tie the former church with its connecting parish hall into a cohesive program that would accommodate the needs of the senior resident. Currently, the site grades down toward the entry to the parish hall, one of the goals in this plan is to add two more levels to the parish hall. The additional levels would create a main continuous level with the current first floor of the former church building. A new regraded main entry would be established in this location to create accessible entrance to the facility. The lower level surrounding the former parish hall would be a grade level patio that would ramp down to a lower recreational outdoor area that serves the current senior residence facility located behind the proposed project. The goal of this connection is to establish social interaction between residence of the proposed and existing facilities. main level Proposed main entry graded up. upper level exploded axonometric Current parish hall entry graded down page 1

Dalton Senior Housing adaptive reuse of a school into affordable senior housing conceptual phase Two: using the same concepts as found in one, this scenario includes the classroom area of the 1950 s gym addition for additional units, removing the gym only. The challenge of this project is that the grading of the site is significantly lower than the first floor of the existing building causing accessibility issues. The other issue is the overall size of the building is dramatically larger than the program space currently needed by the owner. I developed two concepts: one: to deconstruct the 1950 s gymnasium addition, keeping the historic 1920 s section of the school intact. I proposed reusing the lower level walls of the gymnasium as retaining walls for a raised parking lot space that would raise the grade to the main entry level. Incorporating some ideas I learned when designing my Chinatown cultural center in studio B-2, the current rear outdoor courtyard space would be enclosed with a curtain wall to offset the heaviness of the brick structure creating office and community spaces in the building, and also serve as the main entrance. Axonometric View Concept 1 Perspective Proposed Entry page 2

Moseley Apartments adaptive reuse of a school into affordable multifamily housing conceptual phase The challenge of this project is that the grading of the site is significantly lower than the first floor of the existing building causing accessibility issues. I proposed two elevator addition concepts one: adding only an elevator lobby and office to create accessibility. two: in addition to the elevator and office, it would create an additional segment to the building in keeping in the same rhythm of the existing two segments that would allow for additional units. Another challenge was the placement to get the maximum units within the space while maintaining a cohesive mixture of one, two and three bedroom units throughout the three levels of space. Rear of the current school which would become the side of the main entry. Play area for apartment buildings children The street view with the proposed addition page 3

C-2 studio boston architectural college spring 2011 john pilling and luis montalvo, instructors longstudio puerto rico night club The design studio explored the culture and attitudes of Puerto Rico and its people. In addition to studying Puerto Rican history academically, the class also took a 10 day trip traveling the island to really get a taste of the Puerto Rican culture. The goals of this studio was to soak in the culture of Puerto Rico and express feelings and attitudes of Puerto Rico through plastic art that would eventually translate into a design. Through the final piece plastic art developed, we were to translate that form into a night club located on the rocky shore at the fort of Old San Juan. The following pages are some many sketches I drew while on the trip, As well as the final development of my nightclub concept for the studio. Sketches as they appear counter clockwise: PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK STUDENT PRODUCT 13' /16" PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK STUDENT PRODUCT Ideas developed from the plastic art reactions, were that of flex, morph, entanglement La Concha Hotel, San Juan- lobby interior La Concha Hotel, San Juan- rear of Le Pearl restaurant La Concha Hotel, San Juan- lobby interior San Sebastian Street, Old San Juan San German- town plaza looking toward Porta Coeli Chapel The final concept of the nightclub area was to incorporate the wall as part of the night club. Above shows how the design concept can be expanded architecturally creating more spatial areas for various programs upon the site. PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK STUDENT PRODUCT The image to the top right shows the final plastic art model developed on juxtaposed upon the site. The image to the bottom right shows the final concept on the site. page 7

The Third Level of the building would serve as the entry level from the interior wall space of the former fort. These spaces primarily consist of a sky bar, cafe areas, and a gallery space. At night, the cafe area along the existing wall would be cleared for an upper dance level. The above section shows sky bar, with private function space (orange) and lounge areas. The red shows the piers that function as vertical circulation as well as structural support for the different levels. The section below additionally shows the night club area with the dance level at the wall level as well as the main dance club below(green) The above section shows sky bar, with private function space Below shows the night club area The second level would serve primarily as lounge areas and private function space above the dance club area (left side) and a formal restaurant area above the performance hall space (right side). page 8

The first level in two areas, the left is the dance club area which is connected to the performance hall via an open corridor. Between the two spaces is a terraced multi level patio area to be used by the dance club as more intimate outdoor areas. The above plan focuses at the dance club level where the plan below focuses at the performance hall level which is slightly lower than the dance hall space. The above section is showing the terraced multi-level patio space between the dance club and performance hall. Below is the section at the performance hall, showing the restaurant and gallery space above. Restaurant space. The kitchen space is centered within the restaurant enclosed by frosted glass. The idea is the light from the kitchen would be diffused into the dining area. The bar also would glow with a series of tubular lights. The tables are designed to be on a telescoping piston so that they can be lowered or raised depending upon the desired function. The tables would surfaces would be either frosted glass or illuminated corrian to provide secondary lighting. On the right are multicolored mechanical lovers that can be open and closed to ventilate the space. Performance Hall space. This space although being mostly enclosed is also an outdoor space. The stage are would be against the existing fort wall. Multicolored up lighting against the wall is used as a continual effort to integrate the wall within the space. page 9

C-1 studio boston architectural college fall 2010 casey huges, instructor mind the gap view from east view from west MARK Axonome analysis phase: The studio was heavily based on making models, and how models can be used as a tool for solving architectural problems. The studio began by taking a cubical section of a parking garage in Boston s Backbay area, and placing it in an other dynamic condition to study its reaction to that space. I placed my section breaking through the former Berlin wall. Through this movement I created the following hypothesis: PLAZA PLAZA What if East and West Germany still exist, and the wall was still enforced by the East Germans. How could the East German government, improve upon the wall system that would also create an economic exchange between the East and West, but prohibit a physical interaction between the two sectors? The architectural solution, I proposed was the wall system would house areas for the east and west to interact and exchanged goods and services. The limitations would be that the interactions could only take place facing north and south. Also the east at no time could see views of the western landscape, however the west could see specific views of the eastern landscape, as a tool of propaganda. The site I proposed for the market place was the Plotzdemer Platz, which at onetime was a major intersection in the city of Berlin, which during the height of the cold war was reduced to a no mans zone. I also proposed that this would be one of many small markets that could be added to the wall system. page 10
