HIGHER EDUCATION CULLINAN STUDIO
WHAT WE CAN DO FOR YOU... Cullinan Studio is an award-winning architectural and masterplanning team designing great buildings and great spaces. We have extensive experience in creating inspiring places for learning and collaborating. This booklet illustrates how we will meet your aspirations: HELPING YOU BECOME MORE SUSTAINABLE DESIGNING WITH WHAT S THERE DELIVERING LIFE-LONG QUALITY WORKING WITH YOU CROSSING BOUNDARIES CREATING ADAPTABLE SPACES Not every project comes in on time and within budget. What makes the Olisa Library truly exceptional is that not only is the foregoing true of it, but its design and build quality are of the very highest. Christopher Pratt, Bursar, Jesus College MAKING GREAT PLACES Cover: Spiralling stair tower taking readers between floors of the Olisa Library, Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. Photo Simon Feneley. 3 HELPING YOU BECOME MORE SUSTAINABLE Getting the big moves right at the start to reduce the demand for heating, cooling and artificial lighting, means that we must begin with the fabric. We can then integrate renewable technologies much more sustainably and economically. We monitor the performance of our buildings to understand how we can improve our designs further. The achievement of BREEAM Excellent rating highlights the major contribution that it [International Digital Laboratory] will make to the University s strategic vision, to make the Warwick campus a living demonstration of the principles of environmental sustainability. David Mullins, Director of Relations, University of Warwick Photo Simon Warren For BREEAM Excellent projects at the University of Warwick (opposite) and the BREEAM Outstanding Institute for Sustainability at Dagenham Docks (above) we used BIM to enable us to easily conduct environmental modelling and assess embodied carbon in the buildings designs.
DESIGNING WITH WHAT S THERE We value the history of each site and have an extensive portfolio of new or modified buildings in historic settings. We recognise the challenges faced by HE and FE estate managers in maintaining an ageing building stock, often designed for outmoded uses and occupancies: we aim to transform these estates into sustainable campus environments. 25 o C Right: Phase one - the Upper Hall Photo Dr John R A Cleaver Opposite: The Passivhaus retrofit of a 1960s university building in London will reduce energy use by 80%, carbon by 40%, improve indoor air quality and reduce overheating. Above: The phased modernisation of Denys Lasdun s iconic 1960s Central Building at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge will increase connectivity, create useful spaces and improve the building fabric.
DELIVERING LIFE-LONG QUALITY We are committed to research in practice and and listening to feedback from our clients to ensure that our buildings are performing as they should. For clients who wish to engage in best practice for performance evaluation, we can offer a fully accredited Soft Landings service with support of the BSRIA Soft Landings User Group. Photo Simon Feneley Opposite: The new Library at Fitzwilliam College in Cambridge provides integrated teaching and IT spaces as well as a new study space at the heart of the college. Above: The Centre for Mathematical Sciences is one of the most cost effective new buildings in Cambridge when considered on a whole life basis.
WORKING WITH YOU Each of our projects is as unique as are the clients, whilst building on 25 years of experience in universities. Hand-drawings and high quality renderings alongside immersive visualisation equipment allows us to easily communicate the developing design - from spatial organisation to furniture, finishes and lighting - helping our clients to make well-informed decisions right from the start. Opposite and above: NAIC has been designed for Jaguar Land Rover, Tata Motors European Technical Centre and WMG at the University of Warwick. We consulted over 100 individuals at all levels of each partner organisation, allowing us to analyse aspirations and differences.
The Centre for Mathematical Sciences has now been occupied for 8 years. The building s quality architecture and functionality are highly regarded within the University and by the mathematicians. John Woods, Project Manager, University of Cambridge CROSSING BOUNDARIES The greatest opportunities for any university lie in encouraging the crossing of boundaries between disciplines and working with the local (business) community. This has creative spatial consequences at a masterplanning level and in the design of both social circulation and specialist areas. Photo Peter McKinven Opposite: The central social hub at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences where different Maths disciplines meet and exchange ideas. Above: The National Automotive Innovation Centre for Jaguar Land Rover, Tata Motors and the University of Warwick Manufacturing Group will inspire collaboration in order to design cutting edge automotive projects.
CREATING ADAPTABLE SPACES Universities are changing rapidly as the full embrace of ICT and carbon reduction impact. We understand the need to build in flexibility and adaptability, and believe in robust design with change in mind so as to future-proof your buildings with even lower carbon footprints. We can also help you make much better use of the buildings you already have. The building is a joy to work in. It is a light, airy and uplifting place to work. The open nature, with lots of glass overlooking technical activity really delivers on the need we had to demonstrate to businesses the technology coming out of Warwick. Gavin Edwards, Programme Manager, WMG, University of Warwick Photo Simon Warren Opposite: The Technology Hall at IIPSI, University of Warwick, employs a flexible servicing strategy to allow easy changes to the layout. Above: Folding, sliding partitions at IIPSI allow flexibility on the first floor for a range of small meetings, seminars, events and larger conferences. Photo Simon Warren
MAKING GREAT PLACES Place-making is crucial to our projects and we design buildings with excellent places; externally, internally and a combination of the two. Space should not be merely left-over between buildings and given over to the car, but should positively enhance social and intellectual life on campus. Opposite: Steps leading to the lower concourse of the Singapore Management University can double-up as an outdoor amphitheatre. Above: The masterplan for the sustainable growth of the Chinese University of Hong Kong strengthens the connectivities within the campus in terms of both pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
A FEW MORE OF OUR PROJECTS 1. Competition design for a 700,000sqm Education Centre in Abu Dhabi gathering primary, secondary and higher educational establishments into one oasis of learning and living. 2. Refurbishment and insertion of a new wing to create a RIBA Award winning library for St John s College, Cambridge. 3. Dramatic retrofit of the BFI Mediatheque, Southbank, London Civic Trust Award winning new Docklands Campus for the University of East London. 5. New RIBA Award winning Herbarium, Library, Art and Archives wing located in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kew Gardens. 6. New RIBA Award winning Faculty of Divinity building for the University of Cambridge We endeavour at all times to conduct our business with integrity, competence and discretion. We are an equal opportunities employer, promoting mutual respect and encouraging life-long development; presently we are 49% women 51% men. Cullinan Studio is Quality Assured to BS EN ISO 9001 and have ISO environmental accreditation. We are members of the Employee Ownership Association and placed 2nd overall in the Building Good Employer Guide 2016.
Cullinan Studio s cooperative structure is at the core of our belief in both social and environmental sustainable design. We are a diverse and agile collective that engages in research, and invests in both people and innovative technology so that we can approach each design with fresh thinking. We believe that design informs construction and construction informs design, so being engaged in the whole process is our fundamental aim. The craft of our architecture reflects how well we have listened to everyone we encounter along the design journey, and what we have learned from our completed work. We have consistently won awards including: Building Awards 2016 BIM Initiative of the Year for BIMspace National Housing Award 2016 for Spring at Stonebridge Park AJ Retrofit Awards for our own studios and Rosendale Primary School in London in 2013 RIBA Award for the BFI Master Film Store in 2012 Special Civic Trust Award 2011 for Community Impact & Engagement for the Stonebridge Hillside Hub Building Magazine s Architectural Practice of the Year 2010 Building Design s Public Building Architect of the Year 2010 the 2008 RIBA Royal Gold Medal for Ted Cullinan the 2002 Stirling Prize Shortlist for the Downland Gridshell CULLINAN STUDIO Foundry, 5 Baldwin Terrace, London N1 7RU T + 44 (0) studio@cullinanstudio.com
