12 RESEARCH: Primary Aspects of Research and Scholarly Work relate to Stormwater management, Ecological and Sustainable Design & Restoration, and Design as Mediation. Additional areas of future focus are in Design of Healthful Environments, Research in Public Perception and Policy, regarding sustainable and ecologically balanced landscapes, Urban Food Production and Issues of Security Design in the Landscape. All areas of research are based in an interdisciplinary research team, from entomologist, ecologists, hydrologists to other design and planning disciplines. Focus of the research continues in Ecological Restoration and in Water in the Landscape, These efforts continue the work and relationship with FOR (a group founded through my research and funded efforts from , with the group, now independently advocating for restoration and grants for the Northern Columbus ravines). In 2006 my efforts were in providing support documentation and letter to the Columbus Foundation Conservation Grant Program to allow the group to fund the Ecological Restoration of the Glen Echo South bank at Cliffside and Glenn Echo. The effort was successful for the group. Man s influence in Shaping the Land, a Historic overview introduces students to the concept that each action and pattern of use man makes on the land leaves an imprint, shaping the culture, responding to the environment and landscape around it. Both the classics of Garden design, and the significant designers are investigated, as well as the vernacular and cultural patterns on the land which emerge from industry, agriculture, trade, transportation and domestic life. The connections between economics, social organization and the land are made as they relate to the landscapes of history as well as the landscapes being built contemporarily. Garden and Landscape Design Styles are identified and investigated for their influence on subsequent designs. Graduate Seminars (760) address issues and critical evaluation in landscape such as the Social Responsibility of the Design Professions, the philosophical and practice differences between a Landscape Artist and a Landscape Architect, as well as examining leading practitioners philosophy of design. Planting Design (and Landscape Planting Construction): 333, 633 A Landscape Visual Quality and Character based Planting Design approach, using references to historic and contemporary precedents to inform design. Plant materials and planting is approached from a broad geographical base, focusing on how to understand local flora and ecology in the design context. Technical requirements of Planting Plan Documentation, as well as multiple scales of planting, from Regional and Master Plan Level policies, actions and strategies, to Site and Community scale planting into the garden and microgarden scale of design. Attention is given to Mass, Texture, Color, Seasonality, as well as other sensory components, tactile quality, acoustic impacts and mitigation potentials as well as the fragrance/odor and taste of materials. All within a context of sustainable ecologically responsible design. Professional Practice: 663 Semesters 5367 The Legal, Ethical, Administrative, and Contract Processes involved in Landscape Architecture are studied, including Construction Specifications, Professional Contracts, Proposals for work and Grants, Project Administration, Project Costing, Job Observation, and Post-Construction Project Evaluations.
