2 EUROPE FOR CITIZENS PROGRAMME The European Union is made of its citizens and for its citizens! With this in mind, the Europe for Citizens Programme is funding projects and activities aimed at getting the EU s 500 million inhabitants to play a greater part in the development of the EU. Projects bring people together to talk about the EU integration, policies and values, enhance mutual understanding between them, boost their awareness of the societal impact of EU policies and encourage them to participate in shaping the future of the EU. 3 PROJECT DETAILS LIGHT IN THE CITY PROJECT IN BRIEF The project aims to promote the development of high-quality urban lighting by exchange of good practices and experiences, to raise public awareness of environmental issues concerning lighting and to strengthen international networking in the field of lighting. 4 PROJECT OBJECTIVES To encourage city decision-makers to develop outdoor lighting with a special emphasis on energy-efficiency, safety and aesthetics. To give lighting professional ideas, inspiration, methods, tools and networks to develop the city s lighting system. To provoke discussion and raise citizens awareness of the environmental and scenic aspects of lighting and encourage the involvement of the citizens in lighting projects. To strengthen and develop city partnerships and networks.

5 MAIN ACTIONS The objectives of the project will be met by organizing a customized Light in the City event in each partner city. The events will be organised in 2013/2014. The Light in the City event brings together: professionals of urban lighting designers who are interested in lighting or already designing it cooperation partners and stakeholders representatives of City Planning and Municipal Engineering Departments local residents While the specific contents of each event will be customized and planned together with professionals in urban lighting, all the events will include: Seminar Workshop Guerrilla Lighting event

6 LIGHT IN THE CITY EVENT SEMINAR The seminar is intended for professionals in urban lighting. The seminar is designed to meet the objectives of each host city. The content of the seminar may cover, for instance, new technical innovations, LED lighting, touristic aspects of urban lighting, the design process and exemplary lighting installations. WORKSHOPS The content of each workshop is designed together with local event coordinators and seminar organizers and these should be connected to the theme of the seminar. The objective of the workshops is to acquaint seminar participants with one another and create good contacts with partners and stakeholders. GUERILLA LIGHTING EVENT In a Guerrilla Lighting event, a group of citizens follows a predetermined plan to invade the streets with powerful torches. The objective of a Guerrilla Lighting event is to provoke discussion on city lighting by offering magnificent experiences of the use of light, as well as information on good lighting.
