2 History The UNU Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS), on 1 January 2014, consolidated two previous UNU institutes: the UNU Institute of Advanced Studies, and the UNU Institute for Sustainability and Peace (UNU-ISP). 3 Strategic Direction & Activities Mission The mission of UNU-IAS is to advance efforts towards a more sustainable future, through policy-oriented research and education/capacity development focused on sustainability and its social, economic and environmental dimensions. UNU-IAS serves the international community, making valuable and innovative contributions to high-level policymaking and debates in the international community, in particular within the UN system.

5 UNU-IAS ESD Programme Launched in 2003 as UNU s response to the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD: ) with the support of the Ministry of the Environment of Japan Objectives of the ESD Programme Contribute to SDGs in bridging the gap between learning and development through: Accelerating regional and local solutions (RCEs) Transforming higher education institutions (ProSPER.Net) Developing SD and ESD competences and capabilities as well as science-policy interface (ProSPER.Net and RCEs, with multilateral partners) 5

13 Way Forward ProSPER.Net is committed to the goals and implementation of the Global Action Programme on ESD. ProSPER.Net will aspire to conduct programs and activities aligned with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). ProSPER.Net will continue to contribute to the realization of the goals of relevant ESD and SD international frameworks and declarations.

14 Higher Education Sustainability Initiative (HESI) Rio +20 Commitment to Sustainable Practices of Higher Education Institutions Higher education institution signatories commit to: 14 1) Teach sustainable development concepts, ensuring that they form a part of the core curriculum across all disciplines. 2) Encourage research on sustainable development issues, to improve scientific understanding through exchanges of scientific and technological knowledge. 3) Green their campuses by: i) reducing the environmental footprint; ii) adopting sustainable procurement practices; iii) providing sustainable mobility options for students and faculty; iv) adopting effective programmes for waste minimization, recycling and reuse, and v) encouraging more sustainable lifestyles. 4) Support sustainability efforts in the communities in which they reside.
