THE VISION A JOURNEY OF CHANGE A refreshed and transformed Rossland Museum that will reinforce its position as the West Kootenay s leading museum and archives. A landmark site to congregate, create and strengthen links between diverse communities in the region. A significant shift in public programming: new interactive exhibits, exciting visitor experiences, innovative ideas. Active presence in the city that supports the local economy, spurs partnerships and regenerates and supports tourism.
THE VISION BUILD ON STRENGTHS An established position within the community A superb collection and archives An authentic site and artifacts Gateway location into the region
THE VISION ADDRESS CHALLENGES Aging infrastructure Declining attendance Inefficient site layout Static displays and lack of storyline Lack of protection for some artifacts Operational challenges
KEY GOALS Five key goals will drive the museum s redevelopment: SAFEGUARDING THE COLLECTION AND ARCHIVES REFRESHED EXHIBITION EXPERIENCE DYNAMIC AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING ENHANCED SITE, ENTRANCE AND BUILDING EXTERIOR SUSTAINABLE MUSEUM OPERATIONS
GUIDING PRINCPLES EMBRACE THE PAST AND OWN THE FUTURE CELEBRATE PLACE REDESIGN FOR A DIVERSITY OF INTERPRETATION MOBILIZE THE POWER OF THE COMMUNITY
KEY THEMES FOR REDEVELOPMENT REFRESHED MUSEUM: The Rossland Museum will be refreshed and transformed, and a new look and entryway will enhance the visitor experience. RE-IMAGINING THE COLLECTION: Creating highly engaging exhibits that will dazzle and engage all of the senses by highlighting the existing collection. ENHANCING THE PUBLIC REALM: The museum site will be harmonized and streamlined to create a dynamic, functional and flexible outdoor experience.
KEY THEMES FOR REDEVELOPMENT STREAMLINED OPERATIONS: Balanced operational framework that provides horizontal integration and operational efficiency. SUSTAINABLE RENEWAL: Renewal will require sustainable options to meet anticipated budgets. INCREMENTAL STEPS: This plan is designed to facilitate phased development and funding.
A RENEWED MUSEUM
RENEWED COLLECTION Streamlined storage spaces for exterior and interior collections. Increased safeguarding for collections, particularly for outdoor collections. Enhanced online archival resources for researchers. Secure and separate public research space for archives. Offsite back-up of electronic files.
RENEWED EXHIBITS Dynamic and engaging re-designed exhibits that tell the story of the history of Rossland. Themes: Geology, Industry (e.g., Mining, Power Generation), Community History (e.g. Skiing, Mountain Biking) Re-created mining experience with sensory experiences to mimic Le Roi Mine tour. Renewed outdoor exhibit space on the Lower Bench. Establishment of offsite exhibits (e.g., Library, Red Mountain, Trail and Castlegar Airport, regional museums).

Johnson Geo Centre, Newfoundland and Labrador
RENEWED PROGRAMMING Re-design of exhibit gallery for flexible conversion into event/rental space. Engaging curriculum-based programs for schools. Theatre space available for lectures, films, events, etc. Re-imagined programming to include more events, camps, and lecture series. Active rental of outdoor space for concerts, theatre, weddings, etc.
RENEWED OPERATIONS Balanced organizational structure that meets the needs of the museum without relying too heavily on volunteers. Established operational agreement with city that addresses maintenance, signage and staffing. Established sustainable fundraising framework (e.g. Endowment fund, identify potential sponsors and donors) Improved wayfinding to museum. Enhanced Gift Shop with unique hard-to-find items and opportunities for local artists and craftspeople. Creative and engaging branding, communication and marketing strategy.
RENEWED BUILDING Dramatic new skin and roofline on museum that reflects mining history and protects the building. Redesigned and reconfigured entryway that is welcoming, accessible, exciting and can be viewed from the road. Streamlined collection storage spaces for exterior and interior collections. Redesigned outdoor public space on lower bench for gathering and public programs (accessible). A re-imagined Gift Shop that filters out directly from the gallery space. Streamlined and energy/cost efficient mechanical systems.
ARCHITECTURE
ARCHITECTURAL OPPORTUNITY Renewed modern identity. THINK ZINC! Sparkling Hill Resort, Vernon BC Open up the entry for increased visibility and inviting new appearance. Reflect site s industrial history.
SAME BUILDING NEW CLOTHES
ARCHITECTURAL COMPONENTS Atrium: New transparent atrium for enhanced entryway, improved circulation and usable space for gift shop, visitor s centre, etc. New Entrance Gallery: Unexpected vertical void space provides an opportunity for a grand new entry gallery. New Cladding: New façade to the Museum with metal cladding and bold new signage. Industrial Shed: New shed structure to protect outdoor exhibits and to reference the industrial history of the site.
ATRIUM Appropriate entryway for a modern museum. Transparency to draw the public in. Additional space for visitor s centre, admissions, gift shop, etc. Nisga a Museum
useum
Student Union Building Addition by IKON, The State University of New York
NEW ENTRY GALLERY Vertical void space has been discovered, that will allow the entrance area to be opened up to full height. If the washrooms are relocated, this would create a grand new gallery at the entry, adjacent to the Atrium. This gallery would be half the size of the central open area, and the same height. The concrete block walls between can be punctured to allow visual connections. This space is already built, and will be inexpensive to renovate. Nisga a Museum
