3 Overview Start of a process: Looking at the land south of the town, to the west of Cannards Grave Road as identified in the Local Plan. Bringing together community, the developer and Local Authority to; -Consider appropriate quality and character for proposed development. -Best practice masterplaning and placemaking principles. - Relationship and connection to Shepton Mallet.

4 What we are doing over the next couple of days Workshop 1 1 st -2 nd June A Public Evening and 1 day Stakeholder workshop focused on BIMBY stages 1 and 2. Aiming to: Bring people together. Share local knowledge Identify broad issues and opportunities. Start to consider guiding principles. Workshop 1 ( Public evening); - - An Introduction to PFBC and the BIMBY Workshop Process - Introduction to the timetable of engagement activities. - Rating your area, identifying issues and quality places exercises - Full day Stakeholder Workshop -PFBC introduction to workshop, and the BIMBY Process -Background and context Presentations -Site Walk -Mapping Quality of place Exercise; -SWOT Exercise: Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threat - Principles of good placemaking Exercise Including a visioning exercise ; applying principles of good placemaking.

Public / Neighbours drop- in session : Essential qualities of place and character All day 15 th June 4. 2 nd BIMBY workshop; Stakeholder Session ( workshop 3; Essential qualities of place and character) 29 th June 4. Feedback sessions with Stakeholders, & Community Representatives; 5. Ongoing development of the masterplan and pre application consultation; Autumn 2016 As well as the above focused sessions there will be parallel information circulated in terms of Web site and news leaflets.

11 Applying the Bimby Tool Kit Applying elements of the BIMBY Tool Kit allows the community, the developer and LA to consider and envisage together appropriate character and place principles.

12 Using Bimby- 3 steps Step 1; Getting to know the area Aim; Bring people together Share local knowledge Identify broad issues Actions; Identify & Map Assets through a sustainable framework exercise- Rating Your Area Mapping quality of place exercise Step 2: Links and Connections/ Swot Aim; Assess connectivity of site and stitching into the local fabric Actions; Identify and map neighbourhood elements such as locations of main routes, shops, schools, community facilities etc Review and agree the Principles for Good Placemaking Step 3: Character and Buildings Aim; Identify / agree character, materials and design features that represent character of area and development. Actions; Draw together acceptable buildings/houses and materials / details in an agreed Housing Manual.

This is recognized by the industry as a sustainability appraisal.

13 Step 1 activities Rating Your Area Creates an analysis of what is good and what is not good in a table against 4 pillars of sustainability ; Built, Environmental, Economic and Social. This is recognized by the industry as a sustainability appraisal. Mapping Quality of Place A dots recording exercise on a map with notes for clarification on post-it notes to the side, that identifies good, poor and place worthy of improving.

Step 2 activities Walkable Catchments A BIMBY development should integrate seamlessly into the settlement being accessible so that it can enhance the community and reduce unnecessary car movements.

Map all services and facilities and consider links SWOT Analysis During this activity we explore a better understanding of site including constraints and opportunities Principles of Good Place Making Ensuring and create a good sense of place, and designed in a way that enhances a strong sense of community and wellbeing. This exercise defines a set of Design Principles. Through discussing drawing and agreeing these Principles, a shared vision for site starts to emerge.

Finding and rating local building/house types This activity looks at what types of buildings/houses occur in the local area, and

15 Step 3 activities Defining the 5 Essential Qualities of Place Identifying what makes the area unique using our 5 essential qualities of place matrix. Finding and rating local building/house types This activity looks at what types of buildings/houses occur in the local area, and crucially, which ones are popular and people would like to see more of. Identifying local building elements and materials This activity identifies local building materials and design details that are liked and that represent the area.

16 Workshop Process Outcome A emerging Vision for the site set out as a set of masterplan principles, 5 essential qualities of place and a concept plan together with a Housing Manual The finished Manual is designed to: Be a quality statement between developers and community. Be clear about the placemaking principles, acceptable building types, materials and standards for all. Build consensus and guidance to lead and direct the next stage; the site masterplanning process that will form the planning application for the site.

17 Tonights Exercises; Step 1 Exercise 1 :Rating Your Area We are asking people to write their responses on Post-it notes for both positive and negative aspects, against 4 pillars of sustainability ; Built, Environmental, Economic and Social. This creates very quickly an analysis of what is good and what is not so good in an area. And provides a set of value and issue indicators to guide considerations. Exercise 2: Mapping Quality of Place This exercise explores a better understanding of how some issues identified above relate specifically to places. This is achieved through dots on a map with notes for clarification on post-it notes to the side. There are 3 coloured dots for places people value, poor / hazardous or unattractive places, and places people feel could be improves and could be of value.
