THE AIM IS TO CREATE A COMPREHENSIVE URBAN DEVELOPMENT THAT WILL PROVOKE OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE ELEMENTARY EVERYDAY LIFE, AND PROMOTE NEW URBAN SOLUTIONS THAT SEEK TO DEMONSTRATE HOW THE CITY CAN BE ADAPTED TO WHAT S LIVING, AND NOT VICE VERSA.

IT S CONSIDERED ORIGINAL, TIMELESS AND THE VERY PLACE FROM WHERE WE ALL ORIGINATED. MAN IS ESSENTIALLY CONNECTED WITH NATURE. BUT WE VE ADOPTED A CULTURE VS. NATURE TAKE WHICH INCREASINGLY DEPRIVES US OF THE BENEFITS OF OUR RELATION TO NATURE.

11 SECOND NATURE: WHEN THE FIRST SETTLEMENTS EMERGED, THEY WERE SMALL CULTURAL ISLANDS IN A SEA OF WILD NATURE, WITH AN ENDLESS ABUNDANCE OF RESOURCES AND ALSO WILD DANGERS YOU HAD TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM. IN THE LAST CENTURY THESE SETTLEMENTS HAS GROWN COMPLETELY OUT OF PROPORTIONS, BECOMING AN INCOMPREHENSIBLE SECOND NATURE IN ITSELF. URBAN CULTURE WAS ESTABLISHED IN DIRECT OPPOSITION AGAINST NATURE AND AT THE MOMENT IT IS LIKE THAT THE FIRST AND SECOND NATURE ARE FIGHTING, AND IT IS ALARMINGLY CLEAR, THAT BOTH ARE LOSING.

WE HAVE TO DEAL WITH A DIVERSE CITY AND A DIVERSE URBAN NATURE THAT AIMS BOTH TO ENTERTAIN AND CONTRIBUTE TO THE ECOLOGICAL RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PEOPLE, CLIMATE ADAPTATION, MICRO-CLIMATES, ARCHITECTURE, AND FLORA AND FAUNA.

IT IS BOTH AN ARGUMENT AND A CHOICE. IT IS AN ARGUMENT FOR THE FINANCIAL VALUE THAT NATURE CREATES IN REAL ESTATE AND THE ENVIRONMENT, AND A CHOICE FOR AN EXISTENTIAL KIND OF VALUE THAT ADDRESSES THE QUESTION OF THE GOOD LIFE, AESTHETICS, CREATIVITY, OUR HEALTH AND MENTAL STATE, SKILLS, AND THE ABILITY TO BE SOCIAL BEINGS.

WE MUST MOVE AWAY FROM RIGID CATEGORIES AND GROTESQUE JUXTAPOSITIONS, AND INSTEAD DEVELOP MORE HYBRID NOTIONS OF THE WORLD AND OUR PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT. NOTIONS THAT BRIDGE INSTEAD OF SEPARATE, PRESENTING NEW WAYS TO UNDERSTAND, THINK, AND WORK WITH THE CITY AND NATURE.

19 SITE: THE SITE IS QUITE A LARGE AREA SPANNING FROM THE UNIVERSITY TO THE INNER HARBOUR. IT CONTAINS A SERIES OF DISTRICTS WITH VERY DIFFERENT CHARACTER AND USE. THE EXTENT OF THE AREA OF INVESTIGATION HAS BEEN DEFINED AS A 1.5 X 4.0 KM STRETCH, WITH SPADINA AVENUE, BLOOR STREET AND YONGE STREET ACTING AS BOUNDARIES.

MOREOVER IT IS EXPECTED THAT ALL STUDENTS PREPARE A PRESENTATION ABOUT THEMSELVES - THEIR OWN THOUGHTS ABOUT ARCHITECTURE, AND WHAT THEY CAN ADD TO THIS OPEN STUDIO. PLEASE PREPARE A SHORT PRESENTATION MAX. 7 MINUTES IN A PDF OR PPT. DEADLINE AND PRESENTATION IS THE 8TH OF SEPTEMBER.

23 KICK OFF: RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS OF THE CONTEXT - ORGANIZE MAPPING TEAMS WITH FOCUS ON THE DIFFERENT DISTRICTS. COLLECT DATA FROM VARIOUS SOURCES SUCH AS HISTORICAL MAPS, RANDOM PLANNED PROJECTS, PREVIOUS UTOPIAN IDEAS OR OTHER SPATIAL AND IMAGINARY ASSOCIATIONS THAT ARE NORMALLY HIDDEN. IDENTIFY THE CHALLENGES AND DEFINE THE PROBLEM OR POTENTIAL PARADOX OF THE SITE. FINAL MAPPINGS SHOULD BE BASED ON THIS THOROUGH STUDY AND IDENTIFY THE POTENTIAL SITES AND AREAS. THE THEMATIC MAPPINGS SHOULD BE ILLUSTRATED AND DESCRIBED IN A CONCISE FORM THAT COULD BE INCLUDED IN A COMMON SCENARIO PARADIGM FOR ALL STUDENTS.

OBJECTIVES AND IMAGINARY MAPPINGS AND PROJECTS ARE EXPECTED TO BE DEVELOPED THROUGH THE COURSE AND END UP IN (SITE) SPECIFIC SOLUTIONS. THE INTRODUCTION MUST INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: ANALYSIS OF THE CHOSEN SITE. RELEVANT MAPPINGS. WRITTEN AGENDA. SIMPLE SCENARIOS AND REFERENCES. HOW YOU WILL APPROACH AND PROCEED. DELIVERABLES AND A SIMPLE SCHEDULE.

27 PRODUCTION: DEVELOP PROJECTS AND TOOLS FOR DEBATE, ALL OF WHICH MUST BE BASED ON THE PROCESSES THAT HAVE SHAPED OUR CITIES. DO NOT DWELL ONLY ON THE IMPACT OF THE INDIVIDUAL PROJECTS, BUT ALSO FOCUS ON THE PRE-ARCHITECTURAL MECHANISMS AND PROCESSES THAT URBAN PLANNING AND ARCHITECTURE IS A DIRECT PRODUCT OF. STUDENTS MUST PRESENT NEW IMAGINARY AND ACTIVE LANDSCAPES THAT ARE EVOKING OUR SENSES THAT TURNS STREETS IN TO GREEN AND BLUE INFRASTRUCTURES - WHERE WE ACTUALLY COULD LEARN SOMETHING NEW CREATING HOW- SPACES RATHER THAN TRADITIONAL SHOW-SPACES.

28 SCHEDULE : THE STUDIO WILL BE CONDUCTED ON A SCHEDULE SPECIFIC TO ACCOMMODATE TRAVEL OF THE STUDIO COORDINATOR FROM COPENHAGEN, AND TRAVEL FOR INTEREST STUDIO PARTICIPANTS TO COPENHAGEN. STUDENT WORK WILL BE REVIEWED BY THE CO- INSTRUCTOR WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE TYPICAL OPTION STUDIO SCHEDULE. STUDENTS INTERESTED IN PARTICIPATING IN THIS OPTION STUDIO MUST MAKE NOTE OF THIS IRREGULAR SCHEDULE, AND PRIOR TO SELECTING THIS OPTION STUDIO, MUST ENSURE THAT IT IS NOT IN CONFLICT WITH THEIR OTHER REQUIRED COURSES. STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO BE IN ATTENDANCE FOR ALL SCHEDULED STUDIO TIMES. A GUIDED TRIP IN COPENHAGEN, SCHEDULED WITHIN THE SEMESTER, IS OPTIONAL.

30 TRAVEL : THERE IS AN OPTIONAL TRIP TO COPENHAGEN SCHEDULED WITHIN THIS STUDIO. STUDENTS WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE BOOKING AND FINANCING OF ALL TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATION COSTS FOR THIS TRIP. STUDENTS ENGAGING IN INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL MUST ATTEND A SAFETY ABROAD WORKSHOP WELL BEFORE ANY TRAVEL TAKES PLACE. ONCE THEY HAVE COMPLETED THE APPROPRIATE SESSION, STUDENTS WILL REGISTER IN THE UNIVERSITY S SAFETY ABROAD DATABASE. REGISTRATION IN THIS DATABASE IS MANDATORY FOR ALL STUDENTS IN ORDER FOR THEM TO BE COVERED BY THE UNIVERSITY IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY. FOR MORE INFORMATION, SEE
