Rock Protection: means rock, broken rock, cobbles, boulders or concrete debris placed together in a random but stable manner. Rip Rap: means rock, broken rock, cobbles, boulders or concrete debris placed together in a set and stable manner. Page 2 Rev. Date: 02/1990 OPSS 511
3 MATERIALS Rip Rap Rock Protection Gravel Sheeting Rip Rap, Rock Protection and Gravel Sheeting shall conform to OPSS Geotextile Geotextile shall conform to OPSS 1860 and shall be free of tears. Only Class II geotextile shall be used CONSTRUCTION General Rip Rap The construction of rip rap shall include excavation of the area required. The area shall be fine graded to a uniform and even surface. Where required, the depressions shall be filled, with an acceptable material and compacted. Rip rap shall be placed in a set and stable manner. Where the rip rap is placed on a slope, the placing shall commence at the toe of the slope and progress up the slope. Rip rap shall be placed to the required dimensions and lines. Rip rap shall be set flat on the slope such that the largest dimension is parallel to the slope contours. The larger pieces of rip rap shall be placed in the bottom courses. The rip rap shall be laid closely such that a reasonable semblance of courses is achieved. Smaller pieces of rip rap shall be used to fill the voids. Where rip rap is placed on a geotextile it shall be undertaken so that there is no tearing or damage to the geotextile The construction of rock protection shall include excavation of the area required. The area shall be fine graded to a uniform and even surface. Where required, the depressions shall be filled, with an acceptable material and compacted. Rock protection shall be placed in a random but stable manner. Where the rock protection is placed on a slope, the placing shall commence in the lower end of the slope. Where rock protection is placed on a geotextile it shall be undertaken so that there is no tearing or damage to the geotextile Gravel Sheeting The placing of gravel sheeting shall include excavation of the area required to place the gravel sheeting. Page 3 Rev. Date: 02/1990 OPSS 511
4 In each earth cut where gravel sheeting is specified in the contract, the Contractor shall schedule his operations in such a manner that the sheeting operation follows the excavation work as closely as is practical. Compaction of gravel sheeting material is not required Geotextile Geotextile shall be free of folds, tears and wrinkles. The geotextile shall be joined so that the material laps a minimum of 500 mm and shall be pinned together. Alternatively, the geotextile shall be joined to conform to the seam requirements of OPSS On slopes, the upper portion of the geotextile shall be fixed to prevent sliding during installation. The placement operation shall be such that the geotextile is not exposed to daylight for more than 3 days Disposal of Surplus Material Disposal of all surplus material shall conform to OPSS MEASUREMENT FOR PAYMENT Actual Measurement Rip Rap Measurement will be in square Measurement will be in cubic Truck box measurement will be used when it is not possible to take an in place measurement Gravel Sheeting Measurement will be in square Geotextile Measurement will be in square metres with no allowance made for overlap Plan Quantity Measurement Rip Rap Measurement is by Plan Quantity as may be revised by Adjusted Plan Quantity of the volume in cubic Page 4 Rev.
