CRITERIA The crteron s the Cultural Hertage Ordnance whch defnes a hstorcal or cultural monument as any ste (ncludng sgnfcant trees or other plant lfe located thereon) buldng or structure of partcular hstorc or cultural sgnfcance to the Cty of Los Angeles, such as hstorc structures or stes n whch the broad cultural, economc, or socal hstory of the naton, State or communty s reflected or exemplfed, or whch are dentfed wth hstorc personages or wth mportant events n the man currents of natonal, State or local hstory or whch embody the dstngushng characterstcs of an archtectural type specmen, nherently valuable for a study of a perod style or method of constructon, or a notable work of a master bulder, desgner or archtect whose ndvdual genus nfluenced hs age. At ssue s whether the Commssoners determne the buldng s sgnfcant enough to warrant desgnaton. SUMMARY Bult between 1890 and 1900, ths one story rectangular-planned structure exhbts character defnng features of Vctoran-Utltaran style. The front-gabled structure s lned wth quarry stone and has a roof lned wth alumnum sdng. There s a slghtly off-centered entrance wth a steel door. The shed structure s located n a publc park (Chatsworth Park South). The subject structure was bult by an unknown bulder The shed appears to have been bult to house dynamte durng the constructon of the Santa Susana Pass Tunnel (Southern Pacfc Ralroad Tunnel #26) between 1898 and Because of the subject property's proxmty to the Mnne Hll Palmer Resdence (Hstorc- Cultural Monument (HCM) #133), t s proposed that the proposed Dynamte Shed hstorc monument be ncorporated nto the monument desgnaton for ths property. Both the resdence and the subject structure are located on the hstorc Homestead Acre n Chatsworth Park South. The Chatsworth Hstorcal Socety and ts museum are housed at the Palmer Resdence and provde publc tours of the Homestead Acre. DISCUSSION The Dynamte Shed successfully meets one of the specfed Hstorc-Cultural Monument crtera reflects "the broad cultural, economc, or socal hstory of the naton, State or communty." As a structure assocated wth the development of Chatslrth and the ralroad hstory of the San Fernando Valley, the property clearly qualfes for desgnaton as a Hstorc-Cultural Monument based on these crtera. BACKGROUND The Cultural Hertage Commsson has revewed thorough photo-documentaton of the subject structure by staff of the Offce of Hstorc Resources. Ths proposed desgnaton was referred to the Cultural Hertage Commsson on March 7, 2007 by the Los Angeles Cty CouncL.

The Dynamte Shed near the entrance to the Chatsworth Park South (a.k.a. Chatsworth Recreaton Center) should be ncluded n the lst of hstorcal-cultual monuments, nasmuch as ths strctlue s not curently protected and t has hstorc-cultural sgnfcance as the locaton that the dynamte was stored whle the Santa Susana Pass Tunnel was beng created, and should be ted to the Mnne Hll Palmer House because t s located at the same ste. LAn-209 was excavated by an archaeologcal crew from the UCLA ArchÐeoloGcal Survey n 1968 n order to salvasc nformaton about ths ste before the freeway constructon oblterated t. Although analyss of the excavated data s stll ncomplete, there s so~:c ndcaton that ths ste was occuped durng a perod of tme much earler than the occupaton of LAn-357--perhaps by as muc: as tho or _ three thousand yearg. LAn-357 s presently beng excavated by a crew from Perce ColleGe under the drecton of Bob Pence and by another crew from Reseda Hgh School under t:e drecton of Ken Craft. Ths ste dffero n many respects from LAn-2C9, both n surface features and n characterstcs of ts much deeper depost (n some areas over four feet n depth).
