2 European Cities and Sustainable Urban Planning Practices: Munich-Berlin-Copenhagen-Stockholm Students will take an in-depth look at four northern European cities in three separate countries that have made a conscious and comprehensive effort to become more sustainable in a variety of ways. The course examines the concept of sustainability and how it applies to cities, communities and neighborhoods and gives students insight into a variety of contemporary urban design, planning and practice issues through the sustainability lens. The course combines onsite lectures, readings, field studies, site visits, and student lead research projects. 5 European Cities and Sustainable Urban Planning Practices: Munich-Berlin-Copenhagen-Stockholm Courses and Credits Students will earn a total of 3 credit hours for City and Regional Planning This is a graduate and undergraduate course number. Program Costs Students are responsible for paying The Ohio State University tuition plus a $3,708 program fee. The program fee includes in-country transportation, some breakfasts, lodging, and excursions. It does not cover international airfare, most meals and personal expenses. Hafen City, Hamburg Germany The actual cost for Ohio State to run this program is $4,708 per student; this cost is subsidized by the College of Engineering in the amount of $1,000 (subject to change). In addition, KSA will provide some funds to distribute in the form of scholarships, amount TBD. Not included: airfare to and from Europe and meals. Pre-departure research assignment: Each student is required to conduct research on one of the program sites and prepare a summary paper (2-3 pages) and provide a 5 minute presentation at the site location in Europe. Topics: Urban Design and Pedestrian Zones Urban Park and Plaza Design Eco-neighborhoods and New Town Planning Historical Palace and Estate Garden Design Transportation systems Green Infrastructure Berlin s city model 2. Daily Visual Journal and Urban Photo Essay: Exploring the world's built environments and seeking sustainable solutions. Evidence of individual study from field trips, study tours, and individual travels. Thought processes and diagrams from other design projects and studio work. Density and typology: Building the city. Experiencing the City through neighborhoods: The city of the senses, the city of place. Sustainable Planning Studies at the city/region. Urban Housing. Water infrastructure tour in South Holland Learning Objectives: To understand the importance of the human scale and the interaction between spaces, form, and people, by studying different city environments and the life that occurs in selected cities. We will discuss whether the design of cities influences people and their use of space. Requirements: teams of 2 to 3 one case study per each visited major city four total (Netherlands, Germany, Denmark and Sweden) Refer to itinerary for site selection Group meetings/informal classroom. 10 Innovative and trend-setting projects in sustainable planning, design and construction a Group Activities Field Studies: Parts of this class are on-site discussions during the field trips, so please contribute to these and be prepared by bringing appropriate clothing and shoes as well as digital camera and sketch book. The program will provide transportation during day trips location, but you are responsible for your public transport fares while in major cities. Note: Students are responsible for coordinating predeparture assignments, progress report and site selection with the instructor during office hours or by appointment.
