1 56 th ASCE Environmental & Water Resources Conference Gateway Hotel & Conference Center Ames, Iowa April 5, 2018 Conference Highlights The Iowa DNR took the lead to develop the Iowa River Restoration Toolbox Tools to Enhance Stream Stability for Iowa and Beyond. Hear about this Iowa-specific, best management practices toolbox. By using a holistic and consistent approach for improvements within rivers and streams throughout the riparian corridor and into the watershed, Iowa s river systems will be enhanced. Review of Levee Policy and Lawsuits Resulting from Levee Design will review NSPE, ASCE, and ACEC policy positions relative to FEMA s levee certification program and review lawsuits relevant to the practitioner. Incorporating Sediment Management into the Development of Hydroelectric Dam Infrastructure in Southeast Asia will cover the background of hydroelectric dam development and the ongoing activities to address sediment continuity within a complex system of over 120 dams in the Lao People s Democratic Republic. Terra Lake Park - Sewage Basin to Community Gem will cover the process of converting a sewage basin to a regional community park that will serve Johnston residents and visitors. The City of Dubuque conducted a levee breach analysis to provide additional information in preparation for a potential levee breach. Emergency Action Planning Considering Levee Breach effort included 2D hydraulic modeling, breach parameter review, sensitivity analysis, identification of potential temporary flood barrier alignments, and steps to take for emergency planning. Green infrastructure is beneficial to reduce the amount of storm water runoff, keep water out of sewer systems, and to reduce localized flooding. Looking Ahead: Keeping Green Infrastructure Viable discusses the processes necessary to assure efforts are effective. Hear more about projects installed and the lessons learned ASCE Series Wetland restoration is one of the promising strategies for reducing nitrate to water resources. Maximizing Nitrate Removal from Agricultural Lands Using Targeted (CREP) Wetlands will present accomplishments, financial data, program summary, and future directions. The objective of the Water System Project in Ghana, West Africa was to increase access to water supply; improve sanitation and achieve sustainability of water services in selected small towns and rural communities. Dam safety is a high priority for the Iowa DNR. Hear about the Dam Safety Rules Update. Examining Opportunities for Detention of Agricultural Runoff in Watersheds Using the Agricultural Conservation Planning Framework ArcGIS(R) Toolbox will discuss how ArcGIS can be used for planning and designing watersheds which detain runoff for the purpose of improving water quality. Work is underway to create a greenway that will run along the lower half of Fourmile Creek, starting at the Des Moines River and ending just South of Interstate 80. Lower Fourmile Creek Greenway - Master Plan to Buyout will be discussed. Iowa Waste Load Allocation Manual Update will be presented to continue to ensure that the effluent limits for point source discharges will be protective of the designated uses of the waterbodies. On-Site Wastewater System Site Evaluation and Design will discuss the planning, design, rules, regulations and lessons learned.
2 About ASCE Founded in 1852, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is committed to the advancement of the civil engineering profession and the individual engineer. ASCE acts as a forum for communication among individuals and groups involved in the practice of civil engineering. ASCE also offers a variety of professional development opportunities to members of the profession. The Iowa Section of ASCE, founded in 1920, exists so that Iowa civil engineers and associates may group together locally for their mutual benefit and professional advancement Brian Boelk, P.E. is the current president of the Iowa Section. Purpose and Scope The quality of life we enjoy in Iowa, both now and in the future is directly related to the quantity and quality of our water resources. This conference and workshop will focus on examining the management and engineering challenges that lie ahead in addressing the important water resources issues in the years ahead. The health and welfare of the people of Iowa, and the continued development of the state economy, will depend on sound and timely engineering practice and management skills to ensure protection of our vital water resources. Who Should Attend Civil engineers, scientists, geologists, managers, stormwater managers, developers and urban planners, and administrators from both the private and public sectors. Participants will find the conference to be timely and relevant to the water resource challenges facing Iowan s in the future. Individuals from public interest groups and the legislative arena will benefit from many of conference presentations. Professional Development This conference has been planned in accordance with the criteria established by the IELSEB for professional development hours (PDHs).
