As part of the ICE Knowledge Water Programme 2019, over 200 coastal management professionals will join forces at the ninth ICE Coastal Management conference in La Rochelle to focus on new approaches to coastal engineering that integrate planning and place-shaping. The storm claimed a number of lives and caused hundreds of millions of Euros damage. Poor maintenance of some of the area s coastal defence infrastructure was blamed in part for these effects, but in addition to renewed structural investment, the event also called for improved emergency response procedures and immediate adaptation of coastal communities to coastal risk. This caused controversy with local authorities and communities, and has stimulated a lot of new thinking and new approaches to coastal management in France across a variety of professions. The site visit will include locations that were hardest hit by Storm Xynthia as well as places where a variety of different schemes have been constructed in response. 5

Gala Dinner The Aquarium is one of the largest public aquariums in Europe and home to over 12,000 marine animals from the fragile jellyfish to the fascinating sharks. Guests will be greeted with a drink at the entrance and then will make their way through the aquarium with its diverse marine life from the Atlantic, the Mediterranean and the Tropics. This self-guided tour will end in the Indo Pacific area of the Aquarium where guests will be welcomed with more drinks and some canapes.
