3 Development Viability - What does it really mean? Thursday 21 March (pm) - Offices of GVA, BrindleyPlace, Birmingham New developments raise questions about deliverability that seem increasingly important. Why do development economics matter? What is residual value? How can local authorities take viability into account? This seminar aims to answer these questions to give delegates an understanding of the economic principles which drive the development industry and their impact on the planning process. National Planning Framework - One Year On Friday 26 April (pm) - Walsall Town Hall Looking back on the year from the publication, the Framework has settled down into the national guidance. With transition periods coming to an end and the review of guidance being undertaken there have been regular updates to the national emphasis of getting the development industry building. The seminar will look at interesting cases, clarification of wordings and issues that are arising and how planners are dealing with them from a legal, public and private sector perspective. The Historic Environment and Sustainable Development: Opportunities and Challenges Wednesday 15 May (am) - MADE offices, Birmingham A seminar looking at the implications of the National Planning Policy Framework for the historic environment and exploring ways in which the historic environment and heritage assets can contribute towards planning for and delivering sustainable development in urban and rural contexts at the local and neighbourhood level. Neighbourhood Planning in Action: Rhetoric or Reality? Wednesday 5 June (pm) - University of Birmingham Neighbourhood planning is one of the central planks of the recent planning reforms introduced by the Coalition Government that is designed to devolve power and responsibility for planning down to the neighbourhood level. This new tier of planning presents a range of exciting opportunities and some real challenges for communities to engage in the production of neighbourhood plans that reflect their needs and aspirations. This seminar will explore some of these opportunities and challenges through the lens of neighbourhood planning in action by focusing on a number of case study examples drawn from the West Midlands. The Role of Planning in the Health of People and Places Tuesday 18 June (am) - MADE offices, Birmingham In recent years much evidence has accumulated which shows how important the physical, social and economic environments are to our health both in terms of access to health provision and the very quality and design of places. Public Health and Town Planning have common roots - both grew from concerns about the poor and unhealthy conditions in the expanding industrial cities of the nineteenth century. The purpose of this seminar is to explore the relationships that exist between health and planning and propose ways in which we can improve those relationships. 3
