1 15 August 2016 ARCH5112E Defining Publicness in Infrastructural Architecture An Integrated Design of Hub Pumping Station, Qianhai, Shenzhen Term II Instructor: Prof. Dr. Doreen Heng LIU Water Gate, Yang Yong River, Shenzhen NODE DESCRIPTION Infrastructures are often the most important components of a city. Water, sewerage, energy, traffic, disaster prevention and etc. are usually the routine infrastructures ( 常規基礎設施 ), while other public facilities like education, health, culture and other social undertakings are social infrastructures ( 社會基礎設施 ). These infrastructures not only support the daily life of a city as the fundamental production units, but spatially often occupy the most valuable or beautiful or prominent land of a city. As land becomes more and more scarce as an inconvertible resource of nature, we shall look for best use or creative use of such resource. For example, how is the city and the public able to benefit from these infrastructures o routine production, not only being used invisibly and functionally, but also being learned from, or made as part of everyday experience? Through a research based design of architecture, the studio is to explore the possibility of generating public space & alternative urbanism out of the infrastructure of production. The students have to challenge themselves, working with hydraulic engineers and knowledge, to best use the basic or engineering components of these production units to develop urbanity and public programs out of such process, and design them into a series of architecture that opens to the public, who can learn and
2 experience. The specific design contents include the followings: sqm Integrated landscape master plan modified to accommodate pumps station, substation, building of station supporting facilities, control gate well; and a scenic lake sqm Design of supporting facilities of pump station, including: 1) 300 sqm Museum of Hydraulic Art, linked to 2) 280 sqm Management: reception/ offices/meeting rooms, & etc. 3) 970 sqm Logistics: canteen, dining, bathroom, dormitory and other functions; 4) 500 sqm Auxiliary production facilities: M&E repair, storage, generator, & etc. * building height no more than 14.8m; 3. An integrated design of architectural interface between public area & strict production area: public visiting route/space/volume/elevation & etc. of already designed Pumping Station (total area sqm with underground 9287 sqm & above ground 2955 sqm), 110KV Substation (745 sqm) and Gate well. In conclusion, this is an architectural studio, which starts with a cross disciplinary research, and lands with tectonic solutions. The studio is joint with Politecnico di Torino, Italy. OBJECTIVES through the topic of urbanism in infrastructure, to develop an architectural research method and design skills with the emphasis on the following topics: understand the inter-relationship of architecture with infrastructure and urbanism; build up a knowledge of publicness in various architectural typology (including often-ignored infrastructures)with an awareness of their unique contributions to urban life and forms. develop analytical and intuitive method and design strategy based on such an integrated knowledge above. learn to use significant architectural precedents tactically and critically to further understand the integrated knowledge and support the design process later. develop an integrated and coherent architectural proposal based on the knowledge and design strategy above with individual intuitive approach. LEARNING OUTCOME the key components of the studio exercise and outcomes include the followings: Diagrams: to show the the inter-relationship of architecture with infrastructure and urbanism; to extract the publicness out of the inter-relationship as adding value to urbanism in architecture design. to form the possible spatial relationship in architectural proposal. Case studies understand the integrated knowledge and support the comprehensive design approach. Designs Models, Sketches, drawings(plans, sections & elevation) to develop the unique spatial quality of an comprehensive architectural proposal with integrated and yet coherent knowledge of structural, material, sustainable and environmental. ASSESSMENT SCHEME Min term & Final Architecture Design (individual): 70 % Research & Design Process 20 % Studio attendance & Final Documentation 10 % Total 100%
