2 BACKROUND The organizers are glad to invite doctoral students of earth sciences and ecology from Estonia and abroad to present their original research. The conference title Down to Earth refers to the subjects that will be presented at the conference. The aim is to provide an opportunity to doctoral students to present their research. Conference is an ideal surround for doctoral students to gather and exchange ideas with doctoral students, scientists from Estonia and abroad. Doctoral students` conference is special for other reasons too it is organized and held by PhD students. The conference language is English. 3 INVITED SPEAKERS Marie-Jose Gaillard-Lemdahl - Linnaeus University, Sweden Marie-Jose Gaillard-Lemdahl is a professor in botany-vegetation history/palaeoecology and works within/coordinate several projects on environmental-vegetation history over long time perspective. This research has applications within archeology and present environmental questions such as management of cultural landscapes, biodiversity, and climate development. She is a Foreign Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Class Geosciences. She is also research coordinator for Environmental Science that includes seven research groups. These groups build up the Section of Environmental Science and Technology (EST). Ülo Niinemets - Estonian University of Life Sciences, Estonia Ülo Niinemets is a professor of plant physiology at the Estonian University of Life Sciences. Professor Ülo Niinemets is the first Estonian researcher who has been awarded the European Research Council (ERC) grant to study stress signals in vegetation. The aim of the project is to study how stress signals emitted from plants - volatile organic compounds such as terpenes - impact the Earth s climate. The results may help to solve problems caused by climate change. Atte Korhola - University of Helsinki, Finland Atte Korhola is a professor of environmental change at the University of Helsinki and a member of the Environment Panel of the European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC). His major research topic includes climate change and its ecological and societal impacts, with particular reference to longer-term environmental changes and northern regions. Giorgio Anfuso - Univeristy of Cadiz, Spain Giorgio Anfuso is a professor of coastal geomorphology and environmental geology at the University of Cadiz. His main research topics include coastal processes, coastal evolution and morphological change, subjects on which he has widely published. He has collaborated on several national and international projects on coastal zone characterization and management in different countries especially Spain, Morocco, Italy, Columbia, etc. Jack Holbrook - University of Tartu, Estonia Jack Holbrook is a visiting professor at the University of Tartu. His PhD is in the science field (Chemistry), but he also has a school teaching background. His research covers curriculum development in science subjects, assessment and evaluation as well supervising PhD students in useinspired research, inquiry learning and changing teacher beliefs. Jack Holbrook is an Executive Secretary of ICASE, UNESCO consultant on science education, Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, UK, Member of the Association for Science Education, UK, Life Member of the Bangladesh Association for Science Education.

In case of question please return to Agnes Anderson FINANCIAL SUPPORT Organizers may provide full or partial financial support for doctoral students that cover travel and/or accommodation costs on a competitive basis. Applicants who send an abstract for the presentation will be favoured. Request for funding should be indicated on registration form. ABSTRACT SUBMISSION Abstracts are accepted for oral or poster presentation. Please indicate your preference when submitting. The abstract of presentations (oral or poster) should be written in English and be send via to: Annika Mikomägi (annika.mikomagi@tlu.ee) or Kadri Vilumaa (kadri.vilumaa@tlu.ee). The deadline for abstract submission is 19 March Please use the template to ensure the same style for the abstract volume.
