3 Who we are The Zoological Society of London is a charity devoted to the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats. It's a challenging mission, but with your help we are in a unique position to save our planet's stunning and diverse wildlife. From running field projects in over 50 countries to inspiring future conservationists at our two world-famous zoos, ZSL's approach is wide-ranging. At any given moment we might be simultaneously mapping deep-sea vents, advising a government on carbon reduction, and explaining what penguins eat to a class of schoolchildren. Since Sir Stamford Raffles established the society in 1826, ZSL has been a centre for some of the world's foremost scientists and animal experts. Fellows through the years have included Charles Darwin, Humphry Davy, Desmond Morris and David Attenborough.

Scientists from the Institute of Zoology devised the global standard criteria that determine threat status, as recorded on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. As part of the Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme, pathologists from the Institute of Zoology have undertaken more than 2,500 post mortems over 20 years. contributed to their successful reintroduction to Middle Eastern deserts. Caroline the oryx from Whipsnade Zoo was part of this groundbreaking programme! In 1914 an American black bear called Winnie arrived at London Zoo. She was visited by A.A. Milne and his son Christopher, and lived on in the stories of Winnie-the-Pooh. The ZSL Library was founded in 1826 and remains one of the foremost zoological libraries in the world, with over 200,000 volumes dating from the 16th century to the present. The Arabian oryx was extinct in the wild by the early 1970s, but ZSL Winnie the bear and Christopher Milne
