1 SECTION 6 BRIDGES 6 BRIDGES Throughout the Project, bridges are a key visual element and marker for road users, pedestrians and cyclists. The design of bridges, as with other visible structures, has been undertaken in consideration of all other elements to provide a cohesive and Proposed bridges Homebush Bay Drive Interchange Eastbound Cycleway Underpass Eastbound On-Ramp Bridge over M4 West Westbound Off-Ramp Bridge over M4 West Bridges over Saleyards Creek Concord Road Interchange Westbound On-Ramp Bridge from Parramatta Road Concord Road On-Ramp Bridge to M4 East Concord Road On-Ramp Bridge to M4 West Concord Road Pedestrian Bridge. The new stairs will be reinforced concrete construction with detailing to match the existing stairs on the eastern side of the bridge, with the footpath re-aligned around the existing lift shaft to maintain pedestrian access. The ground landing will join the footpath at Bland Street and the stair columns will be located outside of any clear zones. 6.1 Design philosophy with the RMS Bridge Aesthetics Design guidelines to improve the appearance of bridges in NSW and the SWTC Appendix Existing Structures. The design of bridges is characterised by the following: minimal piers and abutments to maximise usability, permeability and visual transparency The design, form, materials and arrangement of all elements adjoining elements Bridge widening should remain sensitive to the existing the existing structure Pedestrian bridges need to be generous in scale, well lit, provide clear sightlines and feel safe, with their design welcoming, having architectural merit and being appropriate to the context and setting. 2 SECTION 6 BRIDGES 6.2 Bridge details Elevations, sections, and details of all proposed bridge designs are included within this section Homebush Bay Drive Interchange The following bridges are proposed for the Homebush Bay Drive Interchange: Eastbound Cycleway Underpass Eastbound On-Ramp Bridge over M4 West Westbound Off-Ramp Bridge over M4 West Elevations, sections, and details are included within this section. Eastbound Cycleway Underpass The proposed design for the new cycleway through the Homebush Bay Drive interchange incorporates an underpass where the cycleway alignment crosses beneath the eastbound on ramps from Homebush Bay Drive. Safety (throw screens) Structure The concept for the proposed underpass adopts: 3300mm x 3300mm RCBC crown units to be placed on a cast in-situ base slab 500mm x 100mm drainage channels to be cast into the base slab Cast in-situ cantilevered walls to replace headwalls Adjacent retaining walls (RW270, RW282 and RW287) are used in place of wingwalls Splayed cells near the portals. Eastbound On-Ramp Bridge over M4 West This bridge has similar structural characteristics to the C&C site. There is a soldier piled wall along the northern side and a reinforced soil wall along the southern side. The bridge covers these walls as a roof structure. Abutments The southern abutment is supported on cast-in-place piles in the reinforced soil wall. Portal frame The western end of southern abutment was designed to expose abutment columns to simulate a portal frame appearance. This is to achieve a consistent appearance with Westbound Off-Ramp Bridge over M4 West. The abutment headstock was discontinued between these three portal columns. The portal columns have 1.8m diameter cast-in-place bored piles under the ground and rectangular shaped column extensions above the ground. Parapets The bridge has an 1100mm high full height concrete barrier consisting of 4.2m long precast concrete parapets. Westbound Off-Ramp Bridge over M4 West The Westbound Bridge over M4 West consists of a single structure, containing eight simply supported spans of 600 deep RMS precast plank girders. The bridge consists of a single 3.5m shoulder providing an overall width of 6.5m between barriers. Abutments The abutments are supported on cast in place bored piles behind wrap around Reinforced Soil Walls (RSW s). Piers Pier 1 to Pier 3 are hammerhead style piers supported by a single 1.8m diameter cast in place pile. Pier 4 to Pier 7 are portal frame style piers and each column is supported by a pile cap and single 1.5m diameter cast in place pile. The portal new bridge and the minimum vertical clearance of 5.3m is achieved. Parapets A precast concrete barrier with twin railings and an in-situ stitch pour. Safety (throw screens) Safety (throw screens) Superstructure Due to the high skew angles with the Control Line and the centre line of bridge, the western and eastern edges of bridge deck are design as a triangular shape by a cast-in-situ concrete deck with supporting beams. Superstructure 600mm deep plank girders have been adopted to minimise the superstructure depth. The middle section between the in-situ decks is a typical plank bridge consisting of a 455mm deep RMS spaced PSC plank super-structure with a minimum 180mm thick cast in-situ concrete deck. 9 SECTION 6 BRIDGES Concord Road On-Ramp Bridge to M4 West Concord Road On-Ramp Bridge to M4 East Concord Road Pedestrian bridge Westbound On-Ramp Bridge from Parramatta Road Road southbound to the M4 West Motorway westbound, crossing the M4 West Motorway and Concord Road. The bridge is 213m in length and the width between barriers varies from 6.5m to 7.2m. Abutments The abutments are supported on cast-in-place bored piles behind wrap around reinforced soil walls (RSW). Piers Piers 1, 2, 3 and 4 are all hammerhead style piers supported by a single 1.8m diameter cast-in-place column. Parapets A precast concrete barrier with twin railings and an in-situ stitch pour. Safety (throw screens) Superstructure The bridge superstructure comprises 5 continuous spans with twin steel trough girders and an in-situ deck. The superstructure at piers 1 and 2 is haunched on each side of the piers to achieve the main span length while still providing clearance over Concord Rd. The Concord Road on-ramp bridge to M4 East geometry is aligned on a large curvature and varying deck width to achieve carriageways of M4 West Motorway and the M4 East entry ramp and consists of three simply supported spans. The deck width between the barriers varies from 5.67m at abutment A (south abutment) to 22.5m at abutment B (north abutment) and has an approximately 5% cross fall. Abutments Abutment A is also supported on cast-in-place bored piles, whilst abutment B is supported on cast-in-place bored piles within the wrap around reinforced soil walls. Piers Portal frame piers with pad footings are provided at both piers 1 and 2 to suit the geometry of the bridge and appeal to the urban design character. Parapets Full height 1100mm high concrete medium performance level Safety (throw screens) Superstructure The superstructure is comprised of spaced 535mm deep RMS standard planks composite with a 220mm thick deck slab. The 600mm wide precast planks are arranged in a splayed manner to suit the deck geometry in each span. The optimum number of planks chosen for each span limits the maximum varying gap between the planks to 320mm and aligns the edge face of the outer planks in adjacent spans and the centreline of the pier headstock to be congruent. The curved edge of the deck overhang (outside the line of western edge plank) at the Abutment B end in span 3 shall be a minimum of 450mm thick suspended slab supported along two edges the pedestrian path located at the western end of Alexandra Street to the footway of the existing Concord Road Bridge. The bridge deck provides for a pedestrian path width of 2.0m between handrails and 300mm wide kerbs to enable the installation of pedestrian railing and protection screens for a part of the length at the western end. The bridge superstructure comprises 3 simply supported spans, each 16m long. These spans will comprise 4 precast concrete planks and an in-situ concrete deck slab. The western end of the superstructure (composite plank and deck) will cantilever approximately 3.0 m past Pier 3 to the edge of the Concord barrier kerb and protection screen will be necessary to achieve compatibility of the deck edges and providing access between the bridges. Abutments The eastern abutment will be a conventional concrete box abutment, also supported on bored piles. Safety (throw screens) New screen to transition from existing bridge to pedestrian bridge to match screen on existing bridge. Superstructure The bridge substructure comprises reinforced concrete pier columns on cast-in-place piles. The westbound on-ramp bridge from Parramatta Road consists of a single structure, containing three simply supported spans of 750 deep RMS standard precast concrete super T girders. from 4.5 metres to 3.5 metres, and varying width nearside and offside shoulders providing a constant overall width of 7.5 metres between barriers. Abutments The abutments are supported on cast in place bored piles behind wrap around reinforced soil walls. Piers Pier 1 and 2 are cantilevered headstock piers with a 1.8m circular column supported by a single 2.1m diameter cast in place pile. Parapets Precast concrete barrier with twin railings and an in-situ stitch pour. Safety (throw screens) Superstructure 750mm deep precast concrete super T girders have been adopted to minimise the superstructure depth. The deck slab has a minimum thickness of 180mm on the low side of the concrete placement and increases to approximately 330mm on the high side of the carriageway to account for the varying cross fall. 200 WESTCONNEX M4 EAST Urban Design and Landscape Plan
