7 Compact city A sustainable urban form Compact city Urban sprawl form The compact city concept is proposed as an approach that could end the evil of urban sprawl (Beatley, 1995, p. 384; De Roo, 2000). The compact city concept is therefore most of all spatial concept with the intention of intensifying the use of existing urban space as much as possible, thereby improving the quality of urban life and sparing the countryside. a form and scale appropriate to walking, cycling and efficient public transport, and with compactness that encourages social interaction. Chen et al. (2008) proposed that the compact city concept has three main characteristics, namely: density, mix of uses and pedestrian-oriented habitation. 7

10 Two characteristics: Green Infrastructure Spatial scale: determine the GI components; Planning intention: help to design and plan GI The High Line Besides existing components found in urban settings, there are many potential spaces that can be designed as GI components; for example, The High Line, which is an elevated freight rail line transformed into a public park on Manhattan s West side. This project provides an example of creating GI components by using the concept of parks. 10
