9 ABOUT THE SPONSORS Center for Microdata Methods and Practice, University College London The Centre for Microdata Methods and Practice (Cemmap) develops and applies methods for modeling individual behavior, the influences on it and the impact of policy interventions. Cemmap conducts research and organizes conferences, symposia, workshops and training courses. Academic and professional economists and social scientists from the UK and abroad are welcome at Cemmap events. Cemmap maintains an extensive network of fellows at home and abroad, it has organized over 50 training courses, 15 masterclasses and is home to one of the world's leading working papers series in the field of microeconometrics with over 100 titles many now published in leading journals. 10 The Cowles Foundation provides support for research and research related activities through Research Programs in four core areas of interest to Cowles: Econometrics, Economic Theory, Macroeconomics, and Structural Microeconomics. Each of these broad areas has deep ties to the Cowles tradition and provides a foundation for other fields of inquiry in economics and related fields. Cowles Program Areas sponsor visiting faculty and post-docs, organize conferences, and provide other research resources at Yale. From time to time, Cowles also sponsors shorter-term research initiatives in areas of emerging interest. Currently, Cowles is supporting a special initiative in Optimization. Guanghua School of Management, Peking University Established in December 1993 by merging the Department of Economics and Management, the School of Economics, and the Center of Management Science, Guanghua was originally called the Peking University Business School. The name was changed in 1994 to honor the generous donation from the Guanghua Education Foundation in Hong Kong. Just as China is undergoing dynamic changes, the School finds itself in the position of meeting the future challenges facing the world economies. 11 ADVANCING APPLIED MICROECONOMETRICS Aug. 23, 2010 The Olympic Park SIGHTSEEING AGENDA The National Stadium hosted the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, athletic events, and football final of the 2008 Summer Olympics. The stadium cost US$423 million. The design, which originated from the study of Chinese ceramics, implemented steel beams in order to hide supports for the retractable roof; giving the stadium the appearance of a "Bird's nest". The Beijing National Aquatics Center, nicknamed the Water Cube, is an aquatics center that was built alongside Beijing National Stadium for the swimming competitions of the 2008 Summer Olympics. Despite its nickname, the building is not an actual cube, but a rectangular box. Swimmers at the Water Cube broke 25 world records during the 2008 Olympics. 10

12 Summer Palace First built in 1750, the Summer Palace is the most renowned imperial garden of Qing Dynasty. It covers 2.9 square kilometers, three quarters of which is Kunming Lake. The Lake was entirely manmade and the excavated soil was used to build Longevity Hill. In the Summer Palace, one finds a variety of palaces, gardens, and classical architectures. The Palace is also renowned for its 17-Arch Bridge and Long Corridor, a covered walkway famous for its length and more than 14,000 decoration paintings. 11

13 Aug. 24, 2010 Tian anmen Square Tian anmen Square is the large plaza near the center of Beijing, named after the Tian anmen (or Gate of Heavenly Peace) which sits to its north, separating it from the Forbidden City. Tian anmen Square is the largest city square in the world, covering 440,000 square meters. Forbidden City The Forbidden City was the Chinese imperial palace from the Ming Dynasty to the end of the Qing Dynasty. It is located in the middle of Beijing, and now houses the Palace Museum. For almost five hundred years, it served as the home of emperors and their households. The palace complex exemplifies traditional Chinese palatial architecture, and has influenced cultural and architectural developments in East Asia and elsewhere. The Forbidden City was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987, and is listed by UNESCO as the largest collection of preserved ancient wooden structures in the world. 12

14 Aug. 25, 2010 The Great Wall The Great Wall of China, listed as a World Heritage by UNESCO in 1987, winds up and down across deserts, grasslands, mountains and plateaus, stretching approximately 8,851.8 kilometers (5,500 miles) from east to west of China. With a history of more than 2000 years, it is still a most appealing attraction owing to its architectural grandeur and historical significance. 13

15 ADVANCING APPLIED MICROECONOMETRICS TRANSPORTATION GUIDE If you are taking a flight to Beijing International Airport, you might arrive in the Terminal 1, 2, or 3. Regardless of which terminal you are, you are suggested to take a taxi. Under normal traffic conditions, it takes about 45 minutes to arrive at Peking University (PKU), and costs about RMB. Destination: Lakeview Hotel of PKU ( 北京大学博雅宾馆 ) Address: #127, Zhongguancun North Street, Haidian District It is important to note that we are located in the New Building of the Guanghua School of Management (or Building #2). Just in case the taxi driver is not familiar with the place, you can ask him/her to: 1. Drive to the west Gate of Tsinghua University. 2. Then make a U-turn and head towards the south. 3. Turn right at the first traffic light. 4. Turn right after the first block and you will arrive at the Lakeview Hotel, which is a few minutes walk to the conference venue at Room 109, New Building of Guanghua School of Management. There is a map of the Lakeview Hotel on the next page. The red route is suggested. NOTE: When taking a taxi in Beijing, always make sure the first English letter on the car plate is B (e.g. 京 B ). Cars with any other kinds of plates are illegal taxis that should never be taken. 14
