3 History Formed in 1948 in Switzerland to promote horticulture between the different nations and between the profession and the final consumer Members are growers associations Early emphasis in Europe but now worldwide International role, by international agreement, in approving international horticultural exhibitions 2000 s have seen sector consolidation in Europe and therefore need for change in AIPH Full time Secretary General (Tim Briercliffe, UK) from 2013 Incorporated as international non-profit association based in Brussels from 2013

5 AIPH Purpose To stimulate increased demand for ornamental trees, plants and flowers worldwide. To protect and promote the interests of the industry. To be the place where growers come to for international industry information and knowledge exchange. To promote best practice in ornamentals production.

Role of domestic gardens Financial case for green Target audience: Planners, local authorities, landscape architects, health directors, construction industry, decision makers, councillors.

18 Environment & Plant Health AIPH aims: Certification schemes to enable the promotion of best environmental and social practice within the sector whilst seeking to avoid the imposition of standards that unnecessarily harm the competitiveness, profitability and viability of ornamental horticultural businesses. Plant health to facilitate agreements and practice that both minimizes the spread of pests, diseases and weeds whilst maintaining free international trade. Projects: NAPPO/EPPO Floriculture Sustainability Initiative member Platform for sharing environmental initiatives

19 Novelty Protection IP/PBR AIPH aims: promoting the importance of plant breeders rights to improve fairness within the industry and lobbying on legislation that may reduce the ability of growers to innovate. Projects: Close work/lobbying with UPOV Liaison with CIOPORA and ISF Potential You Tube films to promote PBR Fighting UPOV on EDV (Essentially Derived Varieties) Regs

20 Statistics AIPH aims: The primary source for data on international trade and production of ornamental plants Projects: Statistical Yearbook

21 Science & Education AIPH aims: to ensure the sharing of the latest scientific information that will assist growers in improving productivity and sustainability and will assist scientists in the delivery of research with maximum value for growers. Projects: New committee and mechanisms to be explored in partnership with ISHS ISHS Congress in Queensland later this year.
