17 5. Towards a new urban development paradigm for the post-socialistic cities Sustainable spatial development paradigm Key features of the sustainable urban development The idea of compact city The applicability of the compact city model to post-socialistic countries compact city = urban regeneration + elimination of urban sprawl
18 6. Methods of implementation in the given realities Lack of adequate state and local planning and development policies Free market as the major driving force for change Method of implementation based on steering the market forces with the means being in the hands of local and state governments Provision of infrastructure as one of the most powerfull tools
19 7. Conclusions Urban sprawl and urban regeneration in postsocialist cities are driven mostly by market forces In the reality of limited public intervention possibilities introduction and implementation of any new paradigm shall be based mostly on these tendencies
20 In order to achieve the sustainable compact city form three policies have to be considered: Promotion of the market-based regeneration projects Limitation of suburban growth wherever possible Limitiation of the new suburban roads and infrastructure systems construction Our backwardness could be our asset
