6 Street Configuration: Beakes Improvements via Additional Services (City Funded) 6 Modify corner geometry on Beakes to prevent high speed turning and reduce pedestrian crossing distance. Gateway treatment at Beakes (at Division and at 5 th ) to begin slowing traffic. Narrow travel lanes on Beakes and define parking Possible signal operations at 5 th Ave & Beakes intersection. 8 Outreach Feedback 8 Community High School Staff & PTO (multiple meetings) AAPS Traffic Safety Committee Primarily focused around safety guide street crossings to safe locations Adjusting drop-off circulation (switching direction of cars & buses) seen as a benefit Open to reconfiguring fence line and pedestrian access points CHS Student Forums (i.e. Advisory classes) interesting in assisting with plaza maintenance as part of service projects High level of support for the direction of the project

9 Outreach Feedback 9 Kerrytown District Association & Merchants (multiple meetings) Overall, sees value in creating a more friendly and safer pedestrian environment. Eager for infrastructure upgrades. Primary concern relates to loading and delivery operations Proposed plan of improvements to district loading is understood by merchants Proposed changes described on subsequent slide Desire for more bike parking Desire for additional outdoor dining/seating in plaza areas Interested in assisting with landscape maintenance

Need to ensure maintenance needs in the expanded plaza spaces can be addressed (Adopt a Park Program) Street Design Team (multiple meetings) Refine curb edge geometry Agreement on crosswalk improvements to be used (e.g. in-road markers, gateway treatments, etc.) Agreement on median extent and control of turning movements

13 Functional Design: Curb Edge & Street Configuration 13 KINGSLEY th AVE CATHERINE 1. Crosswalks Concrete for higher visibility/contrast against brick. Improvements to use gateway treatment markers & bollards to guide and slow cars 2. Bus Stop Remains at existing location but enhanced landing area. Reduce size of curb-cuts on 5 th Ave. 3. Median Extended further south (to the right) to prevent compound (dangerous!) turn into CHS lot. Will improve district signage to guide people to parking lot correctly. 4. Bike Lane Uses brick material where brick used in the street. Wider bike lane ( gutter) maintained for additional maneuvering space throughout.

15 Functional Design: CHS Drop-Off Circulation 15 Existing loop A C C B2 A D A B1 CHS Drop-Off Provide multiple points of SAFE drop-off to accommodate different driver patterns. AA. New PRIMARY DROP-OFF (southbound): Reverse direction of CHS traffic flow to enter on north driveway. (1) Avoids circulating drop-off traffic back onto Kingsley & 5 th ; (2) Prohibits the S-turn movement from Detroit (south) into the South CHS driveway. B. 5 th AVE DROP-OFF (southbound): Curbside drop-off at B1 (passenger side exit) or B2 (driver side exist) using sidewalks to enter building. C. C School Bus: Reverse direction of drop-off through CHS site D. AAATA Bus Stop use improved crosswalk and potential opening in CHS fence D

16 Functional Design: Turning Movements 16 School Buses 30 Box Trucks School Buses (SB 65-person & SB 84-person) can make required turns with reversed drop-off direction. 30 panel truck (SU30) & 25 box truck (typical Farmer s Market trucks) Can turn sharply on Detroit (north) and turn into and/or back into Kerry Town parking lot & loading zone. Turning for larger (40 & 55 ) trailer semi trucks onto Detroit or into Kerrytown lot not accommodated.

18 Streetscape Design: Paving & Materials Historic brick used to designate roadway area for Detroit Street and primary intersection zone. Brick in the south portion of Detroit Street not anticipated to be removed. Historic limestone curb will be salvaged and consolidated into one location as feasible. Brick used in limited other locations within pedestrian zone as accent material. 18 Existing road brick & sidewalk brick To remain in place as condition allows.

19 Streetscape Design: Trees and Landscape Trees placed in groups of twos in connected planting beds where feasible. Planting beds use curbing to discourage movement through and to contain mulch and plant materials 19

21 Plaza Design: Refined Concepts 21 Plaza design was refined through multiple concepts with a desire to: Provide seating strong support for urban picnic table furnishings Strike a balance between defined interior space and open pedestrian flow. Maintain flexibility Provide planting beds that support shade trees Accommodate a small stepped/raised planter (children to climb on, interesting place to sit, etc.)
