7 Sustainable Design Studio, KTH Explores the relationship between sustainability and architectural design by: - Developing an interdisciplinary, integrated design process where the environmental prerequisites are regarded early in the architectural process. - Acquire knowledge and insights about architecture in a lifecycle perspective. - By developing architectural form in relationship to local conditions, climate, urban settings, social structures and energy efficiency. - By using recent tools for conceptual, analytical and technical working methods as well as encouriging a critical approach to the relationship between architecture and environmental impact.

25 Distinctive climate-adapted urban housing in Oulu. We won the competition to design a smart allweather block in the Toppila Shore project.

26 SUSTAINABLE ENERGY SYSTEMS -Passive house with high thermal mass -A heat pump uses exhaust air and solar collectors to produce hot water -Unused excess heat from the local combined heat and power plant is used for comfort and peakloads - Winter garden acts as a thermal buffer zone -Heat generated by sauna is recycled WINTER DAY - At peak heating loads, unused excess heat from the local heat and power plant maintains indoor climate - At off peak hours it is used for higher comfort - Low altitude solar radiation enter the building - Sauna is directly connected to the winter garden to harvest the heat generated SPRING / AUTUMN DAY - The winter garden acts as a buffer zone to lower heat loss - The warm season is extended SUMMER DAY - High thermal mass in foundation (concrete) keeps indoor climate cool - Garden prevents high altitude solar radiation from affecting the indoor climate SUMMER NIGHT - Cool air chills the foundation

72 VOLUME SUBTRACTION AND ADDITION The existing block: - A nonurban scale meter long façade towards the future main street - A 780 meter long façade in total white

87 THE NEW KAROLINSKA UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL

88 The New Karolinska Solna University Hospital is one of the most comprehensive hospital projects ever undertaken in Sweden. White won an international design competition and our proposal has proven to be so sustainable throughout the process that it has now been purchased and is going to be built. NKS is now being drafted in collaboration with Tengbom within White Tengbom Team
