6 Northwest Detroit Neighborhood Framework Plan // Image Courtesy of Design Workshop Landscape Architecture and Multifaceted Tools for Complex Urban Challenges Michael Tunte, ASLA // Design Workshop 1.5 PDH *Credits pending. Please check back at michiganasla.org for more details. How would our historic cities look if, during their planning and layout, we knew what we know now about the natural and built world? In Detroit, as in most older cities, historic city planning decisions were made in ways that would now be labeled mistakes, but looking back and learning from these mistakes can help inform the path forward. This session will look at historic ecology, or what existed pre-development, and how it can be applied to help address some of the greatest challenges facing cities and neighborhoods today. It s not too late for cities to move in the right direction and landscape architecture is one of the best equipped professions to work with communities to address green stormwater infrastructure, transportation and mobility issues, housing and economic development, open space and the public realm, and historic preservation. Michael Tunte, ASLA is an associate, landscape architect and urban designer with Design Workshop. He has designed award-winning projects, lectured at universities and served as an adviser to numerous clients and communities. The scope of his interests is broad, from site design to the development of large urban areas, with a particular passion about the myriad ways communities use public space. Michael graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Landscape Architecture as an ASLA Student Honor Award winner. He also holds a Master of Urban Design degree from the University of California-Berkeley, where he was a Gadsby Trudgett Scholarship recipient as well as a University of California Fellowship recipient.

7 Syncopating the Landscape Charles Cross, ASLA // Detroit Collaborative Design Center Dan Pitera, FAIA // Detroit Collaborative Design Center 1.5 PDH *Credits pending. Please check back at michiganasla.org for more details. In the eyes of the Detroit Collaborative Design Center (DCDC), the goal of Syncopating an Urban Landscape is to amplify the weaker notes give them room to grow and to reinforce a new dynamically balanced city that is equitable, ecological and inspirational. This lecture will use the work and research of the DCDC to illustrate the issues outlined above. The DCDC practices under the premise that designers should expand their clientele, where they work, and the types of projects they engage in. The DCDC works to include more people, more programs, and more geographies in the process. They are advocates for people who are typically left out of design and place-making decisions. Charles Cross, ASLA is the Director of Landscape Architecture at the Detroit Collaborative Design Center; as well as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Architecture. He also serves as the Faculty Advisor to the National Organization of Minority Architecture Students, and is a member of the Black Landscape Architects Network. Charles holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture from Western Michigan University, a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture and a Master of Urban Design degree from The City College of New York. His past experience in the public sector includes the US Department of Agriculture Natural Resource and Conservation Service and the State of Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Dan Pitera, FAIA is a political and social activist masquerading as an architect. He is the Executive Director of the Detroit Collaborative Design Center (DCDC) at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Architecture, which just received the National AIA s 2017 Whitney M. Young Jr. Award and was included in the 2017 Curry Stone Design Award s Social Design Circle. Dan co-led the Civic Engagement process for the Detroit Works Project Long Term Planning initiated by Mayor Bing in On January 9, 2013, the Long Term Planning team released its decision-making framework titled: Detroit Future City. DCDC s engagement process is currently included in the Smithsonian s Cooper Hewitt Design Museum s exhibition: By The People and The DCDC s Roaming Table has been added to the Smithsonian Institute s permanent collection.
