Columbia Building Intelligence Project (C-BIP) Think Tank Title: Toronto - Vectored Resources Thursday, March 8, 2011, 1:00-5:50 The Power Plant Contemporary Art Center An abundance of material, manufacturing and production-related resources utilized by the North American building industry originate in the expansive territory of Canada. The efficiency of supply pipelines coupled with the sustainable use of natural resources is an concern central to the future of the global building industry. Canada s flow of materials such as metals, timber and minerals, coupled with an expanding sustainable agricultural and power industry, provide the building industry economy with a steady supply of the tools and elements of development. Unique to Canada is the extent of consolidation, based on traditional financial models, that at the national scale provide a vibrant snapshot of global flows of resources. At this seventh C-BIP Think Tank, we will explore the critical roles of material suppliers, manufacturing, production, and global supply chains in the construction of the built environment through a study of how these vectors manifest in the Canadian industry.
Panel 1 : Materials + Processes An analysis of the supply and distribution pipeline of raw materials and means of novel processing of these resources are critical for the future of the building industry. A discussion around the methodologies involved in procuring and delivering valuable components and assets to the building industry involves a focus on the efficacy of processing, transportation, management and other global strategies of distribution. The panel Materials + Processes brings together researchers and practitioners in the area of exploring the latest technology in producing the building blocks of the physical environment. Moderated by Phillip Anzalone, GSAPP - Columbia University Billie Faircloth Director of Research, Kieran Timberlake, Philadelphia Rodolphe el-khoury Principal, Khoury Levit Fong, and Canada Research Chair in Architecture and Urban Design and Associate Professor, John H Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape & Design, University of Toronto Daryl Neate Director, Sustainability, Oxford Properties, Toronto Oliver Neumann Associate Chair of Wood Building Design and Construction, School of Architecture + Landscape Architecture, University of British Columbia, Vancouver Pina Petricone Principal, Giannone Petricone Associates and Associate Professor, John H Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape & Design, University of Toronto
Panel 2 : Assemblies + Systems How the elements of our buildings are assembled into complex components and system determines the level of success in performance and value of design of our surroundings. By exploring the integration of manufactures components and relates systems for deployment in elements of the built environment, efficiencies as well as restrictions in the distribution pipeline can be streamlined. The panel Assemblies + Systems gathers active practitioners and builders to explore how we build and how what we build works. Moderated by Mary Carol Witry, Vice President, Oldcastle Building Envelope Gregory Howell Founder and Managing Director, Lean Construction Institute, Idaho Liat Margolis Assistant Professor, John H Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape & Design, University of Toronto Livio Nichilo P.Eng Engineering Manager, Internat Energy Solutions Canada Inc., Toronto Paul Sheehy Regional Manager, Tremco Roofing, Toronto Robert Simmons CEO, ConXtech, Inc., California
Please note: Panel composition subject to rearrangement. Panel 3 : Design + Development The act of design carries with it the potential for building solutions incorporating beneficial results for humans, cultures and the environment. By exploring methods of developing performative design through rethinking the construction process, the building industry can contribute to the development of a sustainable urban condition. The panel Design + Development brings together researchers and constructors to examine how building can contribute to the betterment of our surroundings. Moderated by T.B.D., Columbia University James Barrett National Director, Integrated Building Solutions, Turner Construction Company, New York Douglas Birkenshaw Principal, B+H Architects & Board Chair, Canada Green Building Council Branko Kolarevic Associate Dean, Professor and Chair in Integrated Design at University of Calgary John Mallie Partner, SHoP Construction, New York Jeff Ranson Sr. Associate in Sustainability at The Innovolve Group Inc. and Operations Manager at Sustainable Buildings Canada, Toronto
Panel 4 : Development + Policy The construction of large-scale developments and urban plans plays a crucial role in the way we integrate all aspects of the supply pipeline. By tackling the question of design and environment at the level of political and social scales, we seek to relate urban policy vectors to establishment and development of supply chain efficiencies. The panel Development + Policy asks those that help set the policy how we can design a more efficient and integrated building industry. Moderated by T.B.D., Columbia University Michael Brooks Michael Brooks, ex-ceo, Real Property Association of Canada, Adjunct Professor, Ted Rogers School of Management (real estate), Ryerson University, Toronto Peter Clewes Partner, Architects Alliance, Toronto Eleanor McAteet City Tower Renewal Program, City of Toronto Rob McMonagle Senior Advisor, The Green Economy, City of Toronto Alex Waters Senior Manager, Living City Kortright, Toronto Jane Welsh A/Project manager, City of Toronto
