3 Course syllabus Aims: To introduce students to the underpinning concepts, explanations and debates in the history of Anglo-Saxon art, architecture and landscape To enable students to begin to recognise and interpret Anglo-Saxon art, architecture and landscapes in the field To enable students to begin to explain the history of the Anglo-Saxon art, architecture and landscape using structured arguments, contextualised in the wider knowledge of what is known about the period and the relevant disciplines, and supported by evidence, in particular that of ecclesiastical architecture and sculpture, earthworks, and settlement morphology. Content: The course will begin with an introduction to the period and its chronology, from the perspectives of both art history and landscape archaeology. Much of Saturday will be taken up with a field visit to a number of Northamptonshire churches in which there is evidence of Anglo-Saxon architecture and / sculpture: Wittering, Barnack, Castor and Great Paxton. It should be noted, though, that the itinerary may vary on the day of the visit itself, since although the tutors will plan the length of time to be spent at each site in advance such visits are bound to provide unexpected opportunities for both exploration and discussion, and we may therefore be longer (or shorter) in each site than we can plan for in advance. Wittering: a later tenth-century two-cell church set within a shrunken medieval settlement, in close association with the earlier manorial complex; Barnack: the medieval church is attached to an earlier pilastered Anglo-Saxon tower, while within the church there is a late Anglo-Saxon/early medieval sculpture of Christ in majesty. Nearby, medieval stone quarries survive on the outskirts of the village, which once supplied much of the region with limestone for medieval churches; Castor: there are records of a 7 th -century monastic house at Castor, founded by the daughters of King Penda of Mercia. Although much of the church is Norman, elements of Anglo-Saxon fabric are incorporated into it. The church lies in association with a palatial Roman praetorium whose outlines are preserved in the modern village around the church. Great Paxton: one of only three surviving aisled Anglo-Saxon churches, that at Great Paxton is remarkable for the piers and columns of its arcades, the evidence of a central tower, and an Anglo-Saxon clerestory. Almost certainly a royal estate minster, the church lies within a planned landscape with an equivalent range of high-status features. On Sunday we will focus on manorial and monastic landscapes of the period to put the visits of the previous day into a wider archaeological and historical context. Presentation of the course: The course will be taught through tutor presentations, whole class discussions, and a full-day field trip. Since the field trip will include visits to uneven rough pasture and the weather may (despite our enthusiastic hopes) be unpredictable, please come prepared with stout, supportive footwear and warm, weather-proof clothing.
4 Outcomes: As a result of the course, within the constraints of the time available, students should be able to: Demonstrate an outline knowledge of the underpinning concepts, explanations and debates in the history of Anglo-Saxon art, architecture and medieval landscape To begin to recognise and interpret Anglo-Saxon art, architecture and landscapes in the field To explain the history of Anglo-Saxon art, architecture and landscape using structured arguments, contextualised in the wider knowledge of what is known about the period and the relevant disciplines, and supported by evidence, in particular that of ecclesiastical architecture and sculpture, earthworks, and settlement morphology.
