Art can be as simple as a woven object hanging from a tree limb and blowing in the breeze to a more complex or involved structure or anything in between. Renowned artists such as Andy Goldsworthy, Richard Long and Herman de Vries have set a creative path for environmental art. Let s bring their spirit to Wildwood Park. 1

Incomplete Applications may not be evaluated. This 2 page Application form (signed and dated) must accompany the otherwise required statements and information. Application materials, other than photographs, drawings, etc., must be submitted in hard copy format. Photographs, drawings, etc. for items 1. and 2. below may be submitted in hard copy format, faxed or digitally on a disk or thumb drive. If submitted digitally on a disk or thumb drive, images should be captured by a digital camera at high resolution at 300 dpi onto a CD or thumb drive. One file will be submitted for each image. Each file should be no larger than 10 megabytes. Images and/or Application forms sent via will not be accepted. If Application materials are desired to be returned, a self-addressed, stamped envelope must accompany the submittal. Separately attached Artist resume or bio statement including examples of prior work relevant to the title of this project ART IN THE WILD, Naturally Inspired Trailside Creations. Photographs, drawings, etc. of three pieces of art (preferably outdoor) previously completed by the Artist should be submitted. If three examples of appropriate prior work are not available, extra effort should be afforded to item 2 below. 2. Separately attached statement and graphics (as available) describing Artist s approach to this project. Written information will be limited to one page double spaced. A description of what the artist will actually be proposing for this project, while not mandatory as part of the Application, will be favorably considered in the Application evaluation process. 3. If artists preliminarily identified preferred sites at the optional information meeting, up to three site preferences can be listed using the Wildwood Park site identification system. preferred site #1: preferred site #2: preferred site #3: 4. 6 GENERAL INFORMATION PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The Dauphin County Parks and Recreation Department, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, is sponsoring an outdoor, trailside public art installation at Wildwood Park. The goals of the project are: Present quality art using natural materials Involve the community Provide public educational opportunities The installation will be on public display from April 13, 2013 through October 31, ELIGIBILITY: The project is open to any interested person or group wishing to submit an Application, including professionals, non-professionals, schools, students, naturalists, artists, designers, etc. Employees of Dauphin County (and their immediate relatives) and members of the project s organizing and evaluation committees (and their immediate relatives) are not eligible to participate. INFORMATION ABOUT LOCATION: Wildwood Park is located in the rolling hills of central Pennsylvania on the outskirts of downtown Harrisburg. Over 85,000 people use the Park annually. Its 229 acres are a haven for countless species of flora and fauna centered around the 90 acre freshwater wetland. A popular three- mile loop trail encircles the park with side trails and boardwalks for a total of six miles of trails. Its attractive Olewine Nature Center features engaging exhibits on environmental education. Established in 1901, during the City Beautiful Movement, Wildwood was part of a nationwide effort to improve urban life. In 1976, the Dauphin County Commissioners assumed ownership of the property. Now managed by Dauphin County Parks and Recreation Department, Wildwood Park is one of Pennsylvania s premier centers for environmental studies, educational opportunities and outdoor recreation. It is a cherished retreat for nature lovers, bird watchers and exercise enthusiasts. The park web site is 6
7 SCHEDULE Project announcement: Monday, July 16, 2012 Application submittal deadline: Friday, January 4, 2013 (postmarked) Notice of accepted applications and site assignments: Friday, February 1, 2013 Mandatory pre-installation meeting for accepted applicants*: Friday, February 8, 2012 at 6:30-8:30 pm or Saturday, February 9, 2013 at 1-3pm Final concept sketch due to Project Contact: Wednesday, February 13, (may be sent by , fax or hard copy) 2013 Art installation start: Monday, March 18, 2013 On site materials transportation assistance provided Wednesday, March 20 & between 8:00am and 12 noon: Monday, April 1, 2013 Art installation completion: Monday, April 8, 2013 Judging of art installations: Tuesday, April 9 through Thursday, April 11, 2013 Opening artist reception and announcement of judging: Friday, April 12, 2013 Public display of project: Saturday, April 13 through Thursday, October 31, 2013 On site materials transportation assistance provided Tuesday, November 12 & Between 8:00am and 12 noon: Wednesday, November 13, 2013 Artwork removal deadline: Saturday, November 16, 2013 * All meetings will be held at the Wildwood Park Olewine Nature Center unless otherwise indicated. 7
8 SELECTION SELECTION PROCESS: An evaluation committee will review all applications and select those for installation based on: 1. The Artist s stated compliance with all project rules, requirements, procedures and scheduling. 2. Evidence in the Artist s statement and graphic submittals that the artwork will address the project title and goals. 3. Evidence in the Artist s statement and graphic submittals that the artwork will be appropriate for installation at the Wildwood site. The evaluation committee retains the right to reject any application or installation at any time during the project that is determined to have a negative impact on the Park and its use, or that it deems unsuitable or unsafe. It is anticipated that a maximum of 15 applications will be selected for installation. NOTIFICATION OF APPLICATION SELECTION RESULTS WILL BE MADE BY MAIL ON FEBRUARY 1, RULES NATURE OF ARTWORK: Artwork will be designed to be responsive and sensitive to the environment and aesthetic of the site s landscape and surroundings. Artwork will be designed and installed to withstand 7 months of outdoor weather exposure with minimal or no maintenance (see MAINTENANCE below). SITE SELECTION: Approximately 30 sites (some water areas) have been identified for artwork installation along the walking trails surrounding Wildwood Park Lake. Each Artist will be assigned a specific site for their installation by the Evaluation Committee honoring each Artist s requested priority site to the best of the Committee s ability. Sites with multiple requests will be assigned through a lottery system. The identified sites will be available for review by interested Artists after July 16, The approximate center of each 10 x 10 land site will be marked with white, numbered flags. Questions about the sites and the project should be ed to the Project Contact (ejohnson@dauphinc.org). Maps of the sites will be available at Wildwood s Olewine Nature Center ; the center is closed on Mondays. MANDATORY PRE-INSTALLATION MEETING: Pre-installation meetings will be held on Friday, February 8 and Saturday, February 9, Artists are required to attend one of these meetings to be held at Wildwood s Olewine Nature Center. Final information concerning site assignments, installation procedures, scheduling and other details will be presented and discussed. 8
9 Rules (Continued) MATERIALS: The artwork installations shall consist of predominately natural materials over 80% is encouraged. The use of existing living site materials (trees, vines, shrubs, etc.) will be allowed providing the use does not result in any damage (as determined by the Project Sponsor) to the existing (or surrounding)materials. Materials resulting from ongoing Wildwood Park site maintenance activities may be available for use by participating Artists on a first-come first-served basis. Such materials include logs, vines, branches, herbaceous materials, etc. The introduction or use of invasive natural materials (as determined by the Project Sponsor) is strictly prohibited. Such material includes, but is not limited to bittersweet, wild grape, ivy, etc. CONSTRUCTION/REMOVAL: The Artist is responsible for all artwork delivery, assembly, installation, removal, shipping and site restoration and assumes the costs related thereto. Limited assistance to participating Artists with transporting materials, etc. to their artwork site will be available. (See the Schedule for dates.) MAINTENANCE: Maintenance of each installation will be the responsibility of the Artist throughout the duration of the project. Any required maintenance observed by the Project Sponsor during the project will be brought to the attention of the Artist and shall be rectified by the Artist within 48 hours of notice. Failure to adequately maintain an installation will result in a request to the Artist by the Project Sponsor to remove his/her artwork from the project. JUDGING The artworks will be judged immediately following installation. Results of judging will be announced at the opening Artist s reception. A first prize of $600, second prize of $400 and third prize of $200 will be awarded. LIABILITY The Artist is responsible for funding, installation, insurance, maintenance, and the timely removal of the artwork and for restoration of the site. Neither Wildwood Park not Dauphin County provides for insurance or liability coverage. Artists submit their work and participate at their own risk. SALES Artists may sell their exhibited work during the project period, but the work must remain on site for the duration of the project. Artists agree that in the event of the sale of their work during the project, a contribution in the amount of 20% of the sale price will be contributed to the Friends of Wildwood Lake Nature Center, Inc. PUBLICITY All official publicity for the project including, but not limited to press releases, brochures, flyers, etc. will be handled by the Project Sponsor. 9
