GEOSYNTHETICS APPLICATIONS NEWSLETTER ISSUE Field Study Reveals Compelling Results for Tensar BX Geogrids Tensar International Corporation (TIC) recently worked with the City of Chula Vista to collect data from two roadway projects with sections of reinforced and unreinforced pavement. This was an opportunity for us to evaluate the performance of two in situ structures that were empirically identical, TIC Technology Manager Nicholas Reck says. The test data showed that the Tensar reinforced section was significantly better than the unreinforced control section. The results were quite profound. UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO EVALUATE BX GEOGRID PERFORMANCE The structures were installed in November 2003 as part of the city s project to reconstruct two high-volume roadways: Palomar Street and Industrial Boulevard. After starting construction, we found that a 50-year-old steel water line was much more shallow than anticipated, says Kirk Ammerman, Principal Civil Engineer for the city. It would have cost a quarter of a million dollars to realign it, so the project designer spoke with TIC Tensar BX Geogrids offer separation along with a reduction in aggregate. about using an alternative design that could allow us to keep the line in place. TIC engineers recommended using Biaxial (BX) 1200 Geogrid for base reinforcement over the sections of the utility line that were too shallow for conventional construction. TIC s design criteria predicted that the BX1200, in combination with 6 in. of crushed aggregate base (CAB) and 11 in. of asphalt concrete, could be used to reduce the pavement section s thickness by 11 in. on Palomar Street and by 8 in. on Industrial Boulevard without any sacrifice in roadway strength or performance. Less base and hauling expense paid for the geogrids and then some, Ammerman says. We had to go before the council for a change order to reduce the contract by over $51,000. A council member remarked that he d seen a lot of change orders, but never one giving back money. FAST FORWARD FIVE YEARS In 2008, TIC approached the City of Chula Vista about analyzing the performance of Palomar Street and Industrial Boulevard. 2 Tensar International Rolls Out the Mat for Newest Paving Reinforcement Solution INTRODUCING THE GLASPAVE TM WATERPROOFING PAVING MAT In 2006, Tensar International partnered with Saint-Gobain Technical Fabrics, a world leader in engineered grids and fabrics for the paving market, to distribute the GlasGrid Pavement Reinforcement System throughout North and South America. Recently, the company added the GlasPave Waterproofing Paving Mat to the growing roster of pavement interlayer solutions. While the GlasGrid System addresses the challenges of reflective cracking on highvolume highways, roads, runways and parking areas, the GlasPave Mat provides waterproofing capabilities and is well suited to lower volume surfaces. Manufactured from a unique combination of fiberglass mesh embedded into a high-performance polyester fabric, the GlasPave Waterproofing Paving Mat provides the highest tensile strength at low strain of any comparable product on the market. Its geosynthetic, non-woven matrix enables an asphalt binder to penetrate and fill voids within the material, limiting the infiltration of surface moisture into a pavement structure. These features help to reduce reflective cracking, improve road performance, lower maintenance requirements and extend pavement service life. GlasPave s matrix design promotes a quick, strong bond with a variety of asphaltic tack coats, and it is easily milled for recycling for other asphalt rehabilitation projects. The GlasPave Mat resists rot, mildew and chemical degradation. Unlike polypropylene fabrics, it will neither shrink nor change dimensions when exposed to hot mix asphalt. And, with its higher tensile strength, it is more durable and less susceptible to on-site installation damage. GlasPave Mats are currently available in two roll widths (46 in. and in.) and in two lengths (750 ft and 3,000 ft) for easy installation. Thanks to our partnership with Saint- Gobain Technical Fabrics, we now have a complete offering of pavement rehabilitation interlayers to complement our biaxial reinforcement geogrids. With a single-source, top-to-bottom product line, Tensar International is better able to meet the needs of owners, engineers and contractors with paving solutions that cost less to construct, last longer and require less maintenance, remarked Tensar International s Roadway Solutions Marketing Director Stephen Archer, P.E. COMPLIMENTS ROLL OUT IN STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA A recent test installation in Stockton, California, drew positive responses from those involved. There, more than 34,000 square yards of GlasPave was installed on residential roadways with high cross slopes in only two days. The city was pleased with the application. It found GlasPave to be more user-friendly, with fewer wrinkles resulting from installation. And since it uses less hot liquid asphalt during installation, it leaves a smaller carbon footprint, noted Marshal Hughes, whose company, Road Solutions, Inc., provided the product. Hughes added that Kent s Oil Service, Inc., installation subcontractor (and a Knife River Corporation subsidiary), applied the mat directly from the back of its truck onto the prepared surface. It goes down a lot easier, confirmed Kevin Remynse, Kent s Oil s general manager. Remynse added that in contrast, the greater width of a competitive product causes excessive wrinkling resulting in irregularities in the roadway and requires an extra crew member for installation. The company mounts 3,000 ft GlasPave rolls on the back of its trucks to reduce changeouts and downtime. Vijay Sinha, P.E., Senior Civil Engineer with the City of Stockton, is pleased with the results as well. Acknowledging its recent installation, Sinha said, we ve had no issues with GlasPave s performance to date. < The GlasPave Paving Mat underwent a test installation in Stockton, California. The subcontractor was able to mount the GlasPave roll to the back of his trucks for easy installation.

3 Border Patrol Keeps Moving With Tensar BX Geogrids The U.S.-Mexico border near the city of Yuma, Arizona, includes long stretches of desolate desert that are nearly impassable to vehicular traffic. These conditions have been a problem for U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Service, which is required to continuously monitor these areas in all types of conditions. It s difficult terrain for all vehicles, says Tensar International Corporation (TIC) Regional Manager Branden Reall, P.E. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is in the process of building unpaved, all-weather roads for the Border Patrol, but there are significant blow-sand deposits to traverse. Geotechnical engineers often treat soft soils such as blow sands by applying a thick base course, but transporting massive amounts of aggregate to remote locations can be very time consuming and expensive. CUTTING COSTS A MILE AT A TIME To tackle these construction challenges while keeping transport and materials costs under control, the USACE is embracing alternatives to aggregate-intensive construction methods. For a recent 9.4-mile project in the Yuma sector from Avenue C to the Salinity Canal, it was able to significantly reduce material costs by incorporating Tensar Biaxial (BX) Geogrid into its road design. Including just one layer of Tensar BX1100 Geogrid as base reinforcement allowed us to reduce the base course by 40%, says Reall. The original design called for 10 inches of Class 1 or 2 aggregate. With geogrids, we were able to provide equivalent strength for the roadway with just a 6 in. base course. NATIONAL GUARD LENDS A HAND Work on the project began in 2006 as a component of Operation Diamondback, which assigned the U.S. National Guard engineering battalions to assist with building operations along the border as part of each civil engineering unit s annual two-week training. It s a simple system to learn and install, says Reall. The soldiers installed the product very quickly. The TIC solution offered an additional benefit by allowing the National Guard crews to place and compact a single lift of aggregate rather than the two-lift operation that would have been required with the 10 in. unreinforced section originally designed. Overall, the USACE also realized significant savings on aggregate and hauling costs. Because of those savings, Reall anticipates that geogridreinforced sections will be used on upcoming portions of the U.S. s nearly 2,000 mile border with Mexico. < Including just one layer of Tensar BX1100 Geogrid for base reinforcement allowed us to reduce the base course by 40%. Tensar BX Geogrids allowed the USACE to realize significant savings on hauling and aggregate costs. The TIC solution proved to be simple to learn and easy to install for the U.S. National Guard engineering battalions.

The Sierra Slope Retention System Offers Solutions for a Community Development Nestled three miles from the Capital Beltway in Prince George s County, Maryland, is The Village at Clagett Farm, a master-planned, equestrian community with hundreds of acres of open space offering a country club lifestyle near city living. During the initial construction phase of three model homes, Toll Brothers, Inc., the owner/developer of this community, faced several urgent grade separation challenges that needed to be addressed. The owners had a strong preference for an environmentally friendly and natural grade separation solution that would support the back lot for three model homes while maximizing the usable area on each lot. The project also presented the challenge of an accelerated timeline in order to meet consumer demand. These challenges were answered by Gretchen Davidson, P.E., territory manager for Tensar International Corporation and Kreig Arnold of Annapolis-based Hardscapes Construction, Inc. by installing the Sierra Slope Retention System. One of the reasons Toll Brothers chose the Sierra System was its ability to maximize land for development while utilizing a minimal footprint. For this particular project, Hardscapes Construction installed a 1H:3V(72 ) structural wall measuring ft in length, topping out at 13 courses with a maximum height of 23 ft. The Sierra System, provided by Tensar International Corporation, used a vegetative wall constructed with black steel welded wire-form (WWF) baskets, reinforced with high-strength Tensar Uniaxial (UX) Geogrid and UVstabilized Tensar Biaxial (BX) Geogrid. The face was also lined with a permanent turf reinforcement mat. The welded wire-form provided a strong facing element during construction that also allowed the installer to easily configure the curves of the wall to meet the property limits. The long-term structural dependability of BX Geogrid ensured surface stability of the slope structure and helped to maintain face alignment. These components worked in conjunction to create a structure that could be depended on to provide long-term performance. In total, 6,100 vertical sq ft of slope was reinforced with the Sierra System. Toll Brothers was looking for a retaining wall site solution that was vegetated and indistinguishable from the native terrain to mirror the development s upscale, country living feel. The Sierra System provided site-specific facing solutions allowing for a variety of aesthetic options. Once the slope was reinforced, the contractor added a winter seed mix to the face in order to facilitate vegetation. The heavy rainfall helped to extend the growing season so that once Spring 2007 arrived, the second perennial seed mix was planted to fill out the wall. Within a few short months, the slope blended naturally with the surrounding environment. Ensuring that the accelerated construction schedule was met, the Sierra System provided the ideal solution since it has minimal, lightweight components that are easy to transport. The system is simple to install and requires no specialized equipment. Since the vegetated wall could be reinforced quickly and easily, Hardscapes Construction was able to install the wall ahead of schedule, allowing for the construction of the model homes to begin much sooner than originally planned. The Sierra Slope was a natural fit for The Village at Clagett Farm. Toll Brothers relied on the system to address their three primary concerns for grade separation: support the back lot of three model homes while maximizing land for development; incorporate a green, vegetated solution that blends with the surrounding environment; and finally, provide quick installation to meet the demands of an accelerated building schedule. A Toll Brothers representative described the site as challenging and remarked that the Sierra System installation, a first for the company in Southern Maryland, has continued to perform very well. < The Sierra System maximizes land for development while utilizing a minimal footprint. The Sierra System offers a variety of aesthetic options to provide site-specific facing solutions.

5 Triton Geotextile Tubes Get Down and Dirty Slush and mush and dirty water no more! Tensar International Corporation introduces Triton Geotextile Tubes into the marketplace. An increasingly more popular dewatering method, this geotextile tube system offers an economical and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional methods for sediment dewatering, containment of mining/industrial waste, sewage sludge and contaminated waste. FABRICATION MAKES THE DIFFERENCE Triton Geotextile Tubes are manufactured from high-tenacity polyester yarn using a weft insertion knitting (WIK) process, creating a high-strength, durable product. Geotextile tubes produced from this WIK process differ from conventional woven fabrics. The load-bearing yarns are inlayed into the structure parallel to each other across the width of the fabric. These parallel yarns are held in position by a grid-like structure of stitches so that they remain straight. In this structural configuration, the yarns are not crimped, as in a woven structure. As a result, when subjected to load, the yarns achieve their full tensile strength, without the deformations associated with straightening of the crimped yarns in woven products. In short, this means Triton Geotextile Tubes can typically be pumped longer than conventional geotextile tubes. DIRTY WATER IN, CLEAN WATER OUT Because Tensar s WIK fabrics incorporate a lightweight, non-woven geotextile backing, Triton Geotextile Tubes have the ability to contain even fine-grained, highly organic materials. It is not uncommon for the effluent from Triton Geotextile Tubes to contain less than 50 ppm total suspended solids (TSS). That means the runoff from Triton Geotextile Tubes can generally comply with National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) regulations. PROVEN IN RESEARCH AND IN THE FIELD From the beginning, Triton Geotextile Tubes have been subjected to rigorous laboratory and field testing. Hanging bag tests (HBTs) have been conducted using various types of organic and inorganic sludge. Results have shown that Triton Geotextile Tube fabrics are effective at dewatering all types of fine-grained sludge. In addition to laboratory testing, Tensar s new system has been proven in field applications as well. UK COAL, Britain s largest producer of coal, conducted a hanging bag test at its Welbeck Colliery facility in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, U.K. between Triton Geotextile Tubes and a competitive, woven, polypropylene bag to determine which fabric had the best capacity to dewater fine coal wash sediments found at a typical project site. Based on the HBT results, Triton TT712 Geotextile Tubes were used to dewater sediments on-site. Once filling had commenced, the tube was observed to begin sweating and dewatering immediately. Within a few minutes of the initial flush, which generally contains a higher percentage of solids, the discharge water was visibly clean. A sample of the water was taken to a local lab for testing. The TSS was measured at < 50 mg/l. The initial percent of solids in the slurry was 7.19%. After three days, the percent of solids was measured at 56%, meaning that half of the water contained in the bag had been expunged as a cleaner, clearer liquid, free from the remaining sediment inside the bag. The UK COAL project concluded that the Triton TT712 fabric dewatered quicker than the competitive fabrics and that the decant water was cleaner (less than 50 ppm TSS) just as Tensar had previously proven in laboratory testing. < APPLICATION USE Primary applications for Triton Geotextile Tubes will include the mining and industrial waste industries to provide recycled, clean water. Secondary applications will include coastal and waterway treatments such as groins, dune cores, dikes and levees, expensive rock replacement, riprap, gabion and concrete systems. Three styles of Triton Geotextile Tubes will be available at launch: TT712, TT715 and TT716, with 14 ft, 28 ft and 42 ft circumference and lengths to suit. For more information, please contact Jeff Fiske (JFiske@tensarcorp.com) for the Americas or Jonathan Wynn (JWynn@tensar.co.uk) for Europe/Asia. Triton Geotextile Tube hanging bag test in progress. Contaminated water or sludge can be pumped into geotextile tubes like this one to expel clean, recycled water. Water runs clear as it escapes the geotextile tube, confining sediment and contamination within the bag.

Tensar International, a LEEDer in Green Site Development Solutions GRADE SEPARATION SYSTEMS OFFER POTENTIAL FOR LEED CERTIFICATION CREDITS If building construction has a primary color now, it s green and it couldn t have come at a better time. After all, buildings have a profound effect on the environment and our available resources. According to research from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), buildings account for 65% of electricity consumption, 36% of our primary energy use, 39% of greenhouse gas emissions, 30% of raw materials usage and 30% of waste output. Thankfully, both the public and private sectors have taken notice. A combination of government initiatives, improvements in sustainable materials and heightened public awareness has accelerated both interest and development in green building. One measure of that is the USGBC s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED ) Green Building Rating System, developed to promote high-performance, sustainable buildings. Launched in 1999, this independent, third-party verification program recognizes achievements in five key areas: sustainable site development; water savings energy efficiency; materials selection; and indoor environmental quality. LEED certification demonstrates that a building is, as the USGBC claims, environmentally responsible, profitable and a healthy place to live and work. Indeed, LEED is becoming a global standard, with certifiable building projects now underway in 41 countries. The benefits of green building are many, including reduced operating costs, enhanced asset value, improved worker comfort, productivity and satisfaction and, of course, recognized environmental leadership in the building industry. Tensar International Corporation (TIC) has responded to the green building movement in a major way. It is our goal to be an outstanding corporate citizen dedicated to developing earth stabilization solutions that are structurally sound and environmentally responsible, remarked Bob Vevoda, company President and Managing Director. To further this goal, we will continue to promote to our customers, contractors, shareholders and industry our commitment to environmental responsibility and project quality. The industry is asking for it, and Tensar Grade Separation Systems and solutions are providing the means to achieve it. As a world leader in the development of technology-driven site solutions, Tensar International offers several grade separation systems that, when used in accordance with LEED criteria, can help earn points toward LEED project certification in the New Construction and Major Renovations category. Our Sierra Slope Retention System, SierraScape Retaining Wall System and Mesa Retaining Wall Systems can help qualify for LEED credits in select sustainable sites (SS), water efficiency (WE) and materials reuse (MR) classifications. Each of these mechanically stabilized earth systems features Tensar Uniaxial (UX) Geogrid as a key component. SYSTEMS POINT THE WAY TOWARD LEED CERTIFICATION Tensar s Grade Separation Systems qualify for consideration in eight specific LEED classifications, offering the opportunity to earn one point each toward LEED certification. These include four classifications in the SS category addressing habitat protection or restoration, maximizing of open space, stormwater design quantity control and stormwater design quality control. Naturally designed ponds may count as open space for site sustainability credits when side slopes are vegetated and gradients average 4H:1V. Many of Tensar s Systems utilizing Uniaxial Geogrid can be backfilled with recycled concrete or other on-site materials to utilize the materials reuse classification.

7 Planting Tensar Grade Separation Solutions with natural vegetative plants helps reduce or eliminate the need for landscape irrigation. Sierra Slope System can help maximize required setbacks while conserving existing natural areas. In these applications, our vegetated Sierra System and SierraScape Systems can be used to: Maximize required setbacks Conserve existing natural areas and restore damaged areas Provide a natural habitat for native plants and ground animals and promote biodiversity Provide a high ratio of open space to a development footprint Maximize stormwater management while minimizing land use through the construction of detention ponds (includes Mesa Systems) Manage stormwater runoff to minimize disruption and pollution of natural water flows with the construction of detention ponds (includes Mesa Systems) Similarly, the Sierra System and SierraScape Systems can be used for two LEED Water Efficiency classifications: reduction of natural water resources for landscape irrigation by 50% and eliminating altogether the use of natural water resources for landscape irrigation. In these applications, vegetated systems can serve to: Maximize required setbacks Conserve existing natural areas Provide a natural habitat for native plants and ground animals Finally, the Mesa Systems, along with the Sierra System and SierraScape Systems, qualify for use in two ME classifications: diverting 50% of site development waste from landfill or incinerator disposal or diverting it by 75%. In these applications, each of our three systems can be backfilled with recycled concrete or other on-site materials with proper engineering. Tensar Structural Geogrids are highly resistant to chemical and biological attack and their homogenous structure provides a very durable product that can be installed in a wide range of environments. This high survivability allows Tensar Geogrids to be used with many recycled materials. Understanding the LEED program and respecting what this new design practice is all about are important to Tensar, commented Jon Ridgway, Tensar International s Director of Grade Separation Solutions. Tensar s core mission is to bring proven, practical solutions to common site development problems. We take pride in the fact that these solutions can also be environmentally friendly compared to conventional approaches while helping designers and architects meet LEED certification. < It is our goal to be an outstanding corporate citizen dedicated to developing earth stabilization solutions that are structurally sound and environmentally responsible. 8 Field Study Reveals Compelling Results for Tensar BX Geogrids (continued from cover) It was a chance to compare reinforced and uninreforced pavement sections that were structurally identical on paper, says Lars Nelson, TIC Pacific South Regional Manager. But we needed the city s cooperation to move forward. As it happened, the City of Chula Vista Engineering and Public Works Departments were already considering a construction directive that would allow geogrids to be used on a broader range of projects, Ammerman says. Signing on for the test provided an opportunity to evaluate the performance of Tensar Geogrids against the city s standard engineering practices to validate the performance of this innovative technology. DCP DELIVERS APPLES-TO-APPLES COMPARISON TIC s evaluation test protocol called for using a coring apparatus to create six one-inch-diameter access holes. An operator would insert a dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP) into the holes and measure the in situ California bearing ratio (CBR) of the aggregate base course at each location as well as the subgrade material. We thought the DCP was a reasonable test for the sections and allowed an apples-to-apples comparison of subgrade response, Ammerman says. During testing, the operator captured data by lifting and releasing a sliding hammer on the DCP. These measurements were then used to calculate and graph the average penetration rate per hammer blow. Data analysis by Reck revealed that the unreinforced sections required approximately 10 to 13 in. of additional aggregate to achieve a level of stiffness comparable to the 6 in. sections reinforced with BX Geogrids. It also confirmed the stiffness retention within the aggregate base course of the reinforced sections even after five years of traffic volume. A linear elastic mechanistic empirical (M-E) analysis of the 6 in. reinforced BX1200 Geogrid section, the 19 in. unreinforced section and the 16 in. unreinforced section was equally compelling. It showed that the thinner reinforced BX1200 section is performing at a higher calculated traffic volume, as measured in equivalent single axle loads (ESALs). Based on the recorded stiffness from the field for each of the aggregate base sections, the 11 in. of asphalt-concrete (AC) in the reinforced BX1200 section could have been reduced to 9.5 in. of AC in Palomar Street and 8.5 in. in Industrial Boulevard while still providing the same level of performance as the unreinforced sections. It was a big eye opener, Reck says. We could have gotten equivalent performance from the BX1200 reinforced sections using even less asphalt. This means the granular layer in this evaluation is much, much stronger than theory suggested. BUILDING COST-COMPETITIVE ROADS THAT LAST LONGER Nelson expects these advantages will prompt more design engineers to consider using reinforcement on both soft and stiff subgrade soils. An important economic message is that there s value in using Tensar BX Geogrids whenever you can reduce the base by 2.5 in. based on aggregate pricing in Southern California, he says. Similarly, Ammerman feels the results will encourage better practices and a more efficient approach to roadway construction. In fact, the City of Chula Vista is currently in the process of ramping up a couple of projects where Tensar BX Geogrids provide an affordable strategy for addressing poor soils and shallow utilities. It s a good tool for our toolbox, Ammerman says. Geogrids provide a way to construct well-built pavements that last longer with less aggregate and asphalt. If we have to rebuild a road in 15 to 20 years, that s not a good use of resources. Tensar gives us a very green alternative with a possible service life of 30 years.
