North King s Town is located fairly centrally within the city, but there are still multiple opportunities to improve mobility within the study area, including connections to surrounding neighbourhoods and the waterfront. These opportunities can support a more accessible, pedestrian- and bicyclefriendly future for North King s Town. 2 How can we shape future employment land uses? North King s Town s economy is in transition, and a diversity of employment types is needed to sustain positive growth and competitiveness. How should the vision position North King s Town economy for the future? Industrial Employment Entrepreneurial Advantage Retail, Commercial and Community Employment Arts and Cultural Employment Attracting a 21st Century Workforce Encouraging Innovation

3 How can we shape future built form? While North King s Town has many beautiful buildings and neighbourhoods, there is an opportunity to create better-de ned and more livable places through the evolution of the built form. What kind of neighbourhood character and development should the Vision encourage? For instance, addressing: Heritage Built Form at Grade Housing Types Built Form Heights and Massing Building Frontage Potential Development Sites

4 How can we enlarge and enhance the public realm? North King s Town bene ts from having a variety of unique parks and open spaces, but access to, and between, these spaces could be improved. The types of open spaces could also be diversi ed to support a wider variety of uses. How can the Vision address opportunities to expand and improve open spaces and encourage their use. 5 How can we support natural and built heritage? Heritage plays a signi cant role in shaping the character of North King s Town. Future opportunities that respect, promote, and conserve Built and Natural Heritage now, and in the future, should be explored. North King s Town is at the heart of Kingston s 21st century community, building on a legacy of crafting great places for people to live, work, and play, and of providing innovative opportunities to grow and diversify the city s economy. It is home to industries, both new and old, that are integrated with a diversity of housing options, services, and amenities. It is active and vibrant, with interconnected neighbourhoods and strong connections to surrounding areas, the waterfront, and Downtown. Its extensive street network encourages walking and cycling, and supports a robust public transit system. A continuous waterfront trail network affords easy access to natural areas and nearby open spaces, while supporting a sense of wildness, refuge, and connection to the city s natural and cultural heritage. Overall, the resulting quality of life of North King s Town continues to attract and appeal to new and longtime residents.

7 Emerging Principles Which principles resonate, why? Which ones do not? Create a welcoming and inclusive place for people to gather, recreate, work, and live. North King s Town will have a high-quality public realm with a range of open spaces for people to use in different ways. There will be a diversity of residential typologies (single family detached, semi-detached and duplexes, town homes, stacked town homes, apartments) and a variety of tenure options (rental, ownership, subsidized) will be encouraged. Enhance options for movement within North King s Town, and to surrounding neighbourhoods. The street grid within North King s Town will be extended, especially to improve connections to adjacent neighbourhoods and the waterfront. Movement networks will prioritize pedestrian movement while supporting other active transportation options like cycling and public transit. Cluster new development to create hubs of activity and investment, and a compact, walkable, built form. North King s Town will evolve and grow in a compact manner with new development clustered together around existing pockets of development to create highly ef cient, animated, and walkable areas. Diversify the economic and employment base. North King s Town will provide a variety of investment options for emerging and established businesses building on a legacy of innovation and entrepreneurship. Flexible and adaptable spaces within buildings will be encouraged to support emerging enterprises and companies, including through the adaptive re-use of heritage buildings. Respect Indigenous traditions, and use of the land. Traditional Indigenous uses will be respected and celebrated, in particular the use of Belle Island. Support arts and cultural uses and activities. Art-related activities and cultural uses will be supported by identifying areas for festivals, markets, performance spaces, and live-work spaces for artists. The integration of arts and cultural uses, and performance spaces, with residential, commercial, and employment uses will be encouraged. Conserve natural and cultural heritage resources. Built heritage resources will be conserved and adaptively re-used and re-purposed in a manner that is compatible with their character. Natural heritage resources, including the UNESCO designated Rideau Canal, and also existing open spaces such as Doug Fluhrer Park and Belle Island will be conserved and protected from future development. Implement sustainable and resilient technologies and design approaches. New development in North King s Town will enhance the wellbeing of the community and reduce its impact on the environment through the incorporation of sustainable design technologies that minimize energy and water use, and provide resilience in the face of extreme weather events.
