5 13. The sheer size and elevation of the cathedral leads to opportunities for it to be glimpsed throughout the city, making it a familiar backdrop for residents. 14. Today it provides a scenic route through the historic lower city, and into the surrounding countryside 15. Roman Lincoln was protected by stout walls and massive gates, the remains of which can still be seen around the city. The ruins of the west gate to the Lower City, seen here, were excavated and preserved in the 1970s. 19. The present-day street pattern of Lincoln retains many elements inherited from earlier Times, as can be seen most clearly from the air. For example the outline of the Roman city is still identifiable, fossilized in the modern layout. 20. Antiquarians and archaeologists have bene gathering information about Lincoln for several hundred years.
