3 Protected areas targets Aichi Target 11 (2010 Conference of the Parties for the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD): By 2020, at least 17 per cent of terrestrial and inland water areas and 10 per cent of coastal and marine areas, especially areas of importance for biodiversity and ecosystem services, are conserved through effectively and equitably managed, ecologically representative and well-connected systems of protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures, and integrated into the wider landscape and seascape. Canada Target 1 (2020 Biodiversity Goals and Targets for Canada): By 2020, at least 17% of terrestrial areas and inland water, and 10% of coastal and marine areas, are conserved through networks of protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures. Developed in collaboration with provinces and territories 3

7 PATHWAY GOAL In partnership with Canada s Indigenous people and relevant sectors of Canadian society, produce a pathway, grounded in science and traditional knowledge, to achieve Canada Target 1 and to establish a coordinated and connected network of protected and conservation areas throughout Canada that will serve as the cornerstone for biodiversity conservation for generations to come.

9 National Steering Committee Mandate: Ensures objectives and deliverables are met, and provides a recommended Pathway to Canada Target 1, considering input from all other Pathway components. 11 National Advisory Panel Mandate: Provide practical and innovative recommendations that reflect a broad spectrum of perspectives & that are based on the best available science & traditional knowledge on: Guidance for establishing a coordinated network of terrestrial protected areas, IPA s and OECMs throughout Canada; Solutions to potential barriers to achieving Canada Target 1 by 2020 and to implementing the guidance over the long-term, including ideas for integrating implementation with other priority programs, such as species at risk and climate change adaptation. Members drawn from a balanced and broad spectrum of perspectives: Indigenous organizations; Land trusts; Conservation non-governmental organizations; Industry; Academia; Youth. 11

12 Mandate: Indigenous Circle of Experts The Indigenous Circle of Experts (ICE) will produce a publicly-accessible report that provides information and recommendations on how ICA s can contribute toward achieving the goals of Canada Target 1 in the spirit and practice of reconciliation. A subset of the ICE, consisting of Indigenous members, will interact with Expert Task Teams to ensure Indigenous expert advice and perspectives are considered in the development of discussion papers on qualitative elements of Canada Target 1. The ICE and National Advisory Panel will interact to ensure efforts and recommendations are aligned to the extent possible. Members include subject matter experts selected by the ICE chair, Assembly of First Nations, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, Métis National Council, and federal, provincial, and territorial governments participating in the Pathway to Canada Target 1. 12
