1 Employment Opportunity Habitat Coordinator This is a Washington Service Corps (WSC), AmeriCorps Individual Placement position with the City of Olympia, Public Works, Environmental Services. For more information about WSC, please visit: This is a volunteer position that offers a stipend of $1, per month before taxes. Application Open Date: 06/09/2017 Application Closing Date: 06/30/2017 at 5:00 p.m. Full Time 40 hours per week Program Benefits: $5,815 education award upon successful completion of service; basic health insurance; job experience; classroom teaching training; forbearance of qualifying student loans and interest accrual payment on qualifying loans; childcare assistance, if eligible. About the Program: The City of Olympia, Environmental Services manages programs for illicit discharge control, stormwater pollution prevention, habitat restoration, citizen science and volunteer programs. This position will assist in supporting these highly important and unique programs and with a focus on habitat restoration and stewardship. Position Description: The Habitat Coordinator will serve with City of Olympia Staff to support Olympia s water quality, habitat restoration, and stewardship goals. The coordinator s essential functions are to develop outreach strategies, engage citizens, recruit volunteers, assist with volunteer stewardship events, and collect field data to assess existing habitat conditions and evaluate the success of restoration projects. This position requires both office and field duties. The Habitat Coordinator will serve alongside Olympia s Stormwater Outreach AmeriCorps Member to provide education and outreach on stormwater pollution prevention. The Habitat Coordinator will serve within Environmental Services, but may also assist other different city departments, community groups, and private citizens. The Coordinator will deliver educational programs, provide technical guidance, and organize volunteer events. The City of Olympia is committed to providing the Habitat Coordinator with valuable job skills and diverse experiences in many areas of interest during their term of service.
2 Typical Duties: The Habitat Coordinator will provide education, outreach and habitat stewardship assistance for the City of Olympia Water Resources Program. Specific duties will include: Develop and implement outreach strategies to recruit volunteers and attract participants to stewardship programs and educational events. Coordinate volunteer stewardship projects on publically owned properties such as parks and stormwater management sites. Conduct site assessments and assist homeowners regarding stewardship of aquatic resources and habitat on their properties by providing assessments, information and recommendations. Support educational workshops and events. Collect field data to assess existing environmental conditions and facilitate restoration planning. Data management directly related to the above essential functions. Qualifications: Possess Bachelor s Degree or higher. The successful candidate must sign a contract with AmeriCorp committing to the position for a 10.5 month term. College level courses in natural resource related fields. Knowledge of Western Washington native and invasive plants. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Organized, self-motivated, high attention to detail, and able to manage and prioritize tasks with minimal supervision. Good natured team player, comfortable interacting with many types of people. Expertise with Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Experience and/or comfortable with teaching and public speaking. Ability to perform field tasks and physical labor in all kinds of weather including digging, wading, handling plants, lifting up to 50 pounds, and walking long distances over uneven terrain. Knowledge of and experience with environmental field data collection methods desired. Knowledge of wildlife habitat needs and restoration techniques desired. At the time of employment, the candidate must possess a current Washington State driver s license and driving record acceptable to the City s insurance carrier. Desired Skills/Demonstrated Interests: Good communicator and team member Leadership skills and diplomatic problem solving abilities Experience teaching and comfort with public speaking GIS/GPS knowledge and experience Availability to work a flexible work week including occasional weekend and evening events.
