4 INTEGRATED LAND PLANNING TECHNOLOGIES APPLICATION FOR RENEWAL OF MINISTERIAL CONSENT 1.0 PROGRAM ABSTRACT Helen Pearce, Chair, School of Design. Andrew Wilson, ILPT Coordinator The Integrated Land Planning Technologies (ILPT), Bachelor of Applied Arts degree program offered by Fanshawe College, within the School of Design, Faculty of Arts, Media and Design, was first offered in The current consent was granted for five years from May 21, 2009 to May Fanshawe College asks for renewed Ministerial consent to offer the ILPT program but with changes critical to increasing enrolment and improving the curriculum as outlined in this application for Renewal of Ministerial Consent. 1.1 EXISTING PROVINCIAL LEARNING OUTCOMES The provincial learning outcomes for the ILPT program are indicative of the knowledge, skills and aptitude of a person working in the field of environmental planning and design. 1. Identify the varied nature and characteristics of sites, neighbourhoods, communities and regions. 2. Investigate and analyse complex environmental planning and design problems. 3. Conceptualize and propose solutions to environmental planning and design problems. 4. Evaluate proposed solutions to environmental planning and design problems/opportunities. 5. Participate in the full range of environmental planning and design activities such as land development and municipal planning. 6. Facilitate participatory environmental planning and design activities such as public meetings and workshops. 7. Apply planning and design principles in general, and more specifically those related to sustainability, ecology and environmental aesthetics, to the planning and design of the built and natural environment. 8. Apply contemporary digital technologies such as geographic information systems and computer-aided design to the investigation, analysis and communication of environmental design problems/opportunities and the presentation of design solutions. 5 9. Create professional quality written and graphic documentation such as reports, plans and presentations. 10. Communicate effectively using various digital media such as computer-aided design, visualization software and geographic information systems. Fulfillment of the learning outcomes by a student is signified by graduation. The capstone term of the program is distinguished by a comprehensive environmental design and planning project that integrates seven courses. Students fulfillment of the program learning outcomes is demonstrated and evaluated by faculty and an external advisory group of professionals through their capstone projects presented orally and digitally in poster, audio-visual and report formats common to professional practice. 1.2 ILPT STUDENTS AND GRADUATES A total of 145 students, 96 regular students and 49 students with advanced standing, have enrolled in the ILPT program from 2004 to students have graduated from the program resulting in a 61% student success rate; 9% short of the 70% provincial goal for student success. 7 students have continued their education following ILPT graduation in areas related to the program: 1. Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (Guelph) 1 2. Master of Landscape Architecture (Guelph) 3. Master of Urban Design (Newcastle) 4. Master of Planning (Toronto) 5. Master of Spatial Analysis (Ryerson) 6. Master of Arts, Geography (Western) 7. Advanced Diploma (Centre of Geographic Sciences) 1.3 EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES ILPT students and graduates are employed in the private and public sectors. Public sector work is with municipalities in planning departments primarily; for example, there are four graduates currently employed by the City of London s planning department; two in land development and two in urban design. 2 One student was employed by the Ministry of Transportation during a work term and was hired full-time upon graduation. Private sector employment may be with the range of firms engaged in land use planning and development, landscape architecture and geographic information systems application. 1 While in the BLA program, the ILPT graduate was deemed qualified for the graduate program; the student chose to stay in the undergraduate program. 2 One of the ILPT students employed by London s urban design department was hired as an urban design technician upon graduation. That graduate worked for a year and then went to England to complete a Master of Urban Design degree. A position in the department was maintained until the then Master s graduate returned whereupon he was promoted to a full-time position as an Urban Designer. 3 PEQAB RENEWAL APPLICATION - ILPT
