1 EVANSTON PRESERVATION COMMISSION Preservation & Design Awards 2018 Nomination Form The Evanston Preservation Commission is pleased to call for nominations for the 2018 Evanston Preservation & Design Awards. This program is aimed at recognizing property owners, architects, contractors and local organizations for their contribution to maintaining and enhancing the architectural, historical and cultural heritage of the City of Evanston through the following categories: Sensitive Addition, Appropriate New Construction, Proper Rehabilitation and Restoration. PROJECT ADDRESS OR NAME OF INDIVIDUAL BEING NOMINATED: (Please enter below) Ryan Field, West Parking Lot, 1501 Central Street CATEGORY: (check appropriate categories) Sensitive Addition/Alteration: a project that successfully integrated an addition/alteration within the architectural style of a main house or building and complements the context and character of a historic district, neighborhood or a specific area within the City. Adaptive Reuse: a project that creatively achieved the adaptive reuse of an existing structure originally used for another purpose. The project must have undertaken at least substantial rehabilitation. X Appropriate New Construction: A new house, building or structure that through its design and use of building materials enhances the quality of the built environment. The project must have a positive impact on its immediate surroundings, including historic district, neighborhood or a specific area within the City. Proper Rehabilitation/Restoration: A project that has closely followed the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for The Treatment of Historic Properties and its Guidelines for Preserving, Rehabilitating, Restoring and Reconstructing Buildings (landmarks and non-landmark contributing/significant buildings city wide are also eligible) X Innovative Solutions in Preservation: Showing sensitive and creative solutions incorporating issues of sustainability, adaptive reuse and integration of accessibility improvements. Life Achievement/Preservationist of the Year: This award is given to an individual who has demonstrated a sustained commitment to the preservation movement for the benefit of the City of Evanston through his/her work or volunteerism. 2 PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Describe briefly and concisely the project's scope of work and important features. Include with your nomination BEFORE and AFTER digital pictures. Attach additional information on a separate sheet if necessary. Improvements are designed to balance the functions of the state-of-the-art athletics facility with the character and scale of Evanston s Central Street Neighborhood. Previously, the parking lot suffered from poor drainage, substandard light levels and unsightly appearances. The reconstructed 899 space parking lot has been designed to not only comply with best design practices, but also to improve the functionality and appearances of the parking lot for the community. Built features include: Reorganized parking that prioritizes pedestrian access to the stadium entrance; Improvements to perimeter roadways and alley, including: Ashland Ave streetscape, including roadway, sidewalk, lighting, plantings and bus shelter; Central St landscape that references the City s corridor plan; Isabella St landscape, including screening plantings; Alleyway improvements including pavement reconstruction and landscape screening. LED lighting; Alternative stormwater storage solutions including rain gardens and native plantings; Reclaimed cube benches created from local trees. 3 Preservation and Design Awards 2018 The Evanston and Northwestern University communities are enjoying a better place to tailgate, gather, stroll and park thanks to a recent initiative by the University to reconstruct the Ryan Field Stadium West Parking Lot. Improvements are designed to balance the functions of the state-of-the-art athletics facility with the character and scale of Evanston s Central Street Neighborhood. Previously, the parking lot suffered from poor drainage, substandard light levels and unsightly appearances. Community outreach identified key issues such as desired improvements to pedestrian and vehicular circulation, lighting and landscape screening. The reconstructed 899 space parking lot has been designed to not only comply with best design practices, but also to improve the functionality and appearances of the parking lot for the community. Built features include: Reorganized parking that prioritizes pedestrian access to the stadium entrance; Improvements to perimeter roadways and alley, including: Ashland Ave streetscape, including roadway, sidewalk, lighting, plantings and bus shelter; Central St landscape that references the City s corridor plan; Isabella St landscape, including screening plantings; Alleyway improvements including pavement reconstruction and landscape screening. 7 The parking area has been reconstructed to prioritize pedestrian flow to the Stadium entrance. A new pedestrian-only corridor is flanked by LED lighting, rain gardens, native landscape plantings and reclaimed wood benches from local trees affected by the Emerald Ash Borer. 5

8 The pedestrian-only corridor includes rain gardens planted with native landscaping and reclaimed wood benches, milled from local trees affected by the Emerald Ash Borer. The parking lot is designed to accommodate group gathering during game days and shares parking with the community when stadium facilities are not in use. 6

9 The Central Street frontage includes a mixture of canopy trees, ornamental trees, shrubs, perennials and groundcover to provide an attractive front door to the stadium entrance in keeping with the City of Evanston s approved Central Street Corridor Plan. 7

10 Streetscape improvements along Ashland Avenue include roadway resurfacing, City standard sidewalks, City standard lighting, parkway plantings, 8 reclaimed wood benches, litter receptacles and new bus shelter area that supports the campus shuttle.

11 Landscape treatments along Isabella Street are designed to soften the appearance of the parking lot towards the community. Landscape treatments include a mix of canopy trees, evergreen trees, multistem trees and shrub groupings. A curved sidewalk provides access between Isabella Street and the stadium entrance along Ashland Avenue. 9

12 Improvements along the west facing alleyway include new pavement, drainage improvements and improved landscape screening for the neighbors to the west. Landscape screening treatments include ornamental fencing, canopy shade trees, evergreen trees, ornamental trees and shrub plantings. 10
