10 Cultural heritage can be seen in the significant buildings, districts, landmarks, landscapes and archaeological sites found throughout the Downtown. Heritage protection, wise use, management and interpretation demonstrate the City s commitment to integrating the significant achievements of our people, their history and neighbourhoods, into the on-going evolution of the municipality. Our cultural heritage includes both tangible and intangible heritage resources. Identification and evaluation of heritage resources is an ongoing process that includes conducting research and survey work during area planning studies and recommending properties to the Heritage Register or Heritage Conservation District studies. The City s Archaeological Management Plan is a predictive model that was developed to ensure that all planning decisions take into consideration the cultural heritage resources of a city that has been inhabited for nearly 12,000 years.

12 Nominations, Research and Evaluation Since 2006 Ontario Regulation 9/06 made under the Ontario Heritage Act: Criteria for Determining Cultural Heritage Value or Interest. While the criteria are prescribed for municipal designation under Part IV, Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act, the City of Toronto uses it when assessing properties for inclusion on the City of Toronto Register of Heritage Properties.

13 City s Heritage Register In 2016, 102 properties were added including 43 Part IV designations. 1 HCD / Part V (215 properties) As of March 1, 2017, City staff have identified an additional 1,250 heritage potential properties that have yet to be added to the City s Heritage Register.

15 Proposed City-wide Heritage Survey In 2018, City Planning will undertake a feasibility study of the creation of a City wide heritage survey to 'list' all buildings that have potential heritage value, such report to include: a timeline for enactment of the survey; a plan to conduct public consultation; a system of prioritization for buildings and areas under threat of development; an engagement plan to recruit and train local volunteers to assist in the survey; and any additional costs associated with the survey
