3 AU VISION Agenda 2063 The Africa We Want African Union Heads of State and Government adopted Agenda 2063 an articulation of the vision of AN INTEGRATED, PROSPEROUS, PEACEFUL AFRICA, DRIVEN BY ITS OWN CITIZENS, REPRESENTING A DYNAMIC FORCE IN THE GLOBAL ARENA A Vision and an Action Plan. A Call for Action to all segments of African society to work together to achieve the vision continental development goals

4 Agenda ASPIRATIONS 1. Prosperous Africa based on Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development 2. Integrated Continent, Politically United based on the ideals of Pan- Africanism 3. Africa of Democracy, Respect for Human Rights, Justice and the rule of Law. 4. Peaceful and Secure Africa 5. Africa with strong Cultural Identity, Values and Ethics 6. Africa of people-driven development relying on the potential of its women & youth; 7. Africa as a Strong, Resilient and Influential Global Player and Partner

5 AGENDA 2063 IMPLEMENTATION FRAMEWORK 1. Existing Policy frameworks e.g. CAADP; PIDA; PAU; African Governance Architecture; African Youth Charter etc 2. Thematic ten-year rolling plans e.g. Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa (STISA 2024) Continental TVET Strategy for Africa; Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA 16-25) 3. Concrete Flagship projects identified 4. Annual Themes for focusing implementation 2017: Investing in Youth to Harness the Demographic Dividends 2018: Winning the fight against corruption: a sustainable path to Africa s Transformation

6 Agenda Energy The Call for Action of the Agenda 2063 with regard to energy refers to: harnessing all African energy resources to ensure modern, efficient, reliable, cost effective, renewable and environmentally friendly energy to all African households, businesses, industries and institutions, through building the national and regional energy pools and grids [Pic 1]

7 Agenda Water With regards to Water, the African Union Agenda 2063 aims to have equitable, sustainable use and management of water resources for socio-economic development, regional cooperation and the environment Access to water and sanitation and basic human necessities [Pic 2]

8 Agenda Climate Agenda 2063 states that we must Act with a sense of urgency on climate change and the environment, implementation of the Programme on Climate Action in Africa Aspiration 1, part 16 of the Agenda 2063 requires that: Africa shall address the global challenge of climate change by prioritizing adaptation in all our actions, drawing upon skills of diverse disciplines and with adequate support (affordable technology development and adaptation, capacity building, financial and technical resources) to ensure implementation of actions for the survival of the most vulnerable populations, including islands states, and for sustainable development and shared prosperity. 9 Agenda 2063 Ten Year STI Strategy The African Union Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa 2024 (STISA-2024) places science, technology and innovation at the epicentre of Africa s socio-economic development and growth. Research, particularly applied research, is a tool and an enabler for achieving continental socio-economic development goals in order to accelerate Africa s transition to an innovation-led, knowledge-based economy. Six areas of Focus for developing human capital and scientific research: Eradication of hunger and food security; Prevention and control of disease and promotion of well-being; protection of environment; societal cohesion; wealth creation

15 Brief on the Pan African University (PAU) Established by decision of AU Heads of State and Government to exemplify quality, excellence and relevance, with the following objectives: Strengthen African Higher Education and Research address quality; intra-african collaboration; Innovation and links with industry and social sector Produce a critical mass of high quality intellectual capital; Make African higher education and research attractive, globally competitive, and locally relevant; and Serve as a model for quality education and research

16 PAU Objectives Contd. Develop continental and world-class graduate curriculum; Development oriented research in areas having a direct bearing on the development of Africa; Enhance the attractiveness of African HE and research institutions for effective development and retention of young African talent; Attracting the best intellectual capital including African Diaspora; Facilitate networking and purposeful mobility of students and academic staff among African academic institutions; Invigorate dynamic and productive partnership with public and private sectors.

19 PAUWES Research Agenda Mission and Vision Focus on practice-oriented thematic research as well as research dealing with socio-economical, nexus and interdisciplinary issues in the field of water, energy and climate change. Development of a framework incorporating innovative and creative mechanisms that link theory and practice to attract visiting scholars from around the globe Positioned in such a way that it becomes the preferred partner of international and regional networks/ institutions/funding organisations. Development of new and strengthening already existing strategic networks and collaborations on the continent and beyond. Capitalise on the youth dividend in the continent and foster research leading to entrepreneurship or creation of start-ups to generate employability and income in African countries.

20 Goals of PAUWES Research to Practice Forum 2018 To discuss and exchange on the state of the art, challenges, lessons learned, best practices, practical and innovative solutions with regards to energy, water, and climate security in Africa To promote exchange of knowledge and explore modalities for multifaceted collaboration between researchers, practitioners, civil society, private sector, policy makers, etc. whereby topics for joint research, collaboration initiatives and projects can be identified To support the integration of PAUWES into scientific networks in Africa and beyond and support the establishment of PAUWES as a Pan-African (and beyond) hub/platform for the topics of water, energy, climate change and their nexus To provide a platform for students to present scientific inputs in line with teaching and research activities at PAUWES and to expand their network to Pan African and international experts, institutions and companies
