4 Guiding Questions What planning approaches and practices are relevant for addressing urban disaster risk? (multi-stakeholder engagement, participatory planning, integrated planning etc.) Can DRR act as a catalyst for the development of novel/transformative planning policies and practices that put the development of sustainable, resilient and equitable cities at its core? What kind of practical tools can guide urban planners and related stakeholders for this transformation?

5 First Purpose: Advisory Role To advise the SRSG for DRR and the UNISDR on matters related to urban planning, DRR and resilience: To support on issues arising with respect to DRR and urban planning and/or the urban context and writing position statements; To serve as a review body for matters arising with respect to DRR and urban planning within the UN system; To advise on DRR and planning in the Post-2015 DRR Framework (HFA2) and its implementation at national and local levels including development of guidance.

6 Second Purpose: Advocacy Role To increase awareness and to advocate for the incorporation of DRR into global (urban) planning policy, practices and education: To engage with local authorities, planning schools and professional associations to advocate the mainstreaming of DRR in urban planning; To promote local practices that incorporate DRR into urban planning within the Making Cities Resilient Campaign.

7 Third Purpose: Networking & Research Role To engage with the actors involved in urban planning and DRR processes in order to initiate/collaborate on relevant research and activities which may include: Partners involved in DRR and Resilience such as the Medellin Collaboration and the RiSE Initative; Regional Organizations, Associations and Research Networks such as ISOCARP, AESOP, and UCCRN; National Planning Associations, Local Authorities, and Community-Based Organizations (local and networks).
