AFRISAM-SAIA AWARD 4 SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE + INNOVATION 01
THE WORLD NEEDS VISIONARIES The world needs visionaries. We call on all practitioners who share our vision to enter the AfriSam-SAIA Award for Sustainable Architecture + Innovation - and bring a better future to lives. Entries accepted in four categories Sustainable Architecture, Research in Sustainability, Sustainable Products and Technology and Sustainable Social Programmes. Apart from recognising excellence in Sustainable Architecture and Research in Sustainability, we also invite entries that make innovative contributions to the fields of Sustainable Products and Technology and Sustainable Social Programmes. We have entered a new era, one in which sustainable design has to be a non-negotiable, integral part of the building industry. We believe that collaboration between all stakeholders is the only way to bring sustainable innovation to our living environments. Through an integrated approach to communities, planning, design, architecture, building practice, natural systems and technology we can create a world that benefits all living creatures. With energy efficiency legislation waiting in the wings, sustainable architecture has become an inevitable requirement. The South African Institute for Architects recognises the importance of green building and encourages their members to incorporate sustainability in building design at an early stage. As a leading producer of building materials in southern Africa, AfriSam is committed to sustaining the environment through responsible manufacturing processes. The brand considers it an honour to be associated with the South African Institute of Architects in recognising outstanding achievement in sustainable architecture. Projects are located on a trajectory towards regenerative whole systems design. Through an integrated approach to communities, planning, design, architecture, building practice, natural systems and technology we can create a world that benefits all living creatures. This award supports a learning journey towards regenerative design. We believe that a sustainable world is possible through innovation and collaborative effort, therefore we have broadened the scope of the award to include two brand new categories. OUR MISSION The AfriSam-SAIA Award for Sustainable Architecture + Innovation recognises contributions that bring sustainable innovation to living environments through an integrated approach to communities, planning, design, architecture, building practice, natural systems and technology. We believe collaboration benefits everyone. 02
CRITERIA Project entries are required to demonstrate how they make the world a better place by embodying sound sustainable practices and bear the hallmarks of great architectural or social design and innovative thinking in the field of sustainability. For 2015/16 entries we migrated to a new paperless online entry system and added two new award categories. Apart from recognising excellence in Sustainable Architecture and Research in Sustainability, we will also consider entries that make innovative contributions to the fields of Sustainable Products and Technology and Sustainable Social Programmes. We are looking for innovative solutions that comply to the following four criteria: 1. HARMONISATION 2. PEOPLE UPLIFTMENT Do the designs and related processes harmonise the use of resources with the conservation and strengthening of ecosystems (natural, social, human, financial, infrastructure)? Do the design and related processes address the dignity of people through the creation of a socio-economic environment that is inclusionary, humane, self-sustaining, maximises the financial viability and impact, and acknowledges lifecycle cost efficiency during and post the implementation process? 3. EVOLUTIONARY PARADIGM 4. PLACEMAKING PERFORMANCE Do the design and related processes contribute towards and develop an ongoing regenerative future? Do the design and related processes enhance the architectural landscape and contextual urban environment including infusion of delight? Before submitting your entry, please assess your project in the trajectory of regenerative design and development - the achievements, gaps /obstacles, potential and leverage points. Successful operation of the entry and cultural adequacy will be fundamental to the appraisal process. 03
With energy efficiency legislation waiting in the wings, sustainable architecture has become an inevitable requirement. HOW TO ENTER 2015/16 entries can only be submitted on our online entry system. More than one project may be submitted. A separate entry must be completed for each separate submission. Eligibility and entry requirements are specific to each respective category. Entrants should please acquaint themselves with each category s specifications. There is no entry fee. ELIGIBILITY Entries for the AfriSam-SAIA Award for Sustainable Architecture + Innovation are to be submitted for consideration by 12:00 on 24 March 2016 via the online submission platform. No late entries will be accepted. Projects completed and beneficially occupied by 24 March 2015 are eligible for entry in the AfriSam-SAIA Award for Sustainable Architecture + Innovation 2015/2016. Research, social programmes as well as technology and products of social importance that fall in an area under the description of sustainable architecture and design can also be entered. Only entries by SAIA members, and located in South Africa are eligible for submission in Category A: Architecture. Projects outside South Africa, which do not require in loco inspection, may be submitted in Categories B: Research in sustainability, C: Sustainable product / technology and D: Sustainable social programmes. Please note that the awards are conferred on the building/s or work, not on the author/s, professional team, client, or contractor although the names of the architectural practice and client will appear on the award certificates. 04
ADJUDICATORS The panel of adjudicators, convened by the SAIA President, will meet the week of 31 March 2016 to select the projects it wishes to inspect from the submitted entries. 8 SUSTAINABLE BUILDING IS AN OUTCOME OF THE PROCESS SUSTAINABLE CAPITAL For a sustainable and regenerative condition to be maintained, it is necessary to continuously add value in these 5 capital domains. 1. NATURAL CAPITAL 2. CULTURAL OR SOCIAL CAPITAL Natural resources, habitat, food producing and health generating capabilities of the natural ecosystem. Social infrastructure and organization, mutual trust and understanding, shared values and socially held knowledge, community cohesion and shared stewardship. 3. HUMAN RESOURCE CAPITAL FINANCIAL CAPITAL The engine for an independent, healthy, local economy. Education, training, developed capabilities, skill-base, etc. Currently the most highly valued form of capital. Facilitates economic production though it is not itself productive. 3. HUMAN RESOURCE CAPITAL Physical Infrastructure and assets generated through human activity that can provide a flow of goods or services. 08
HALLMARKS OF A REGENERATIVE PROJECT PARADIGM SHIFT BUILD TO PLACE, NOT FORMULA Shifting from a mechanical/technical/reductionist world view to a living system understanding. Working with whole living entities humans, places, cities not just the pieces. Wholes are greater than the sum of their parts. Working from and to place rather than from formula place making as part of ecological systems. GO TO THE CORE LEARN FROM NATURE Understanding the heart or core of what the project, place and economy are all about and working from it. Learning to understand the process of nature and working as an integral part of it. YOUR ROLE INNOVATIONS Seeing and developing self, developer, team and served community as playing a meaningful and significant role in regenerative development. What new roles, processes, relationships, worldview shifts and technologies or design systems your project has engaged. 09
TRAJECTORY OF ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE DESIGN MORE ENERGY REQUIRED LESS ENERGY REQUIRED CONVENTIONAL GREEN SUSTAINABLE RESTORATIVE REGENERATIVE DEGENERATING REGENERATING Technical system design Technologies and techniques Fragmented thinking Quantitive Efficiency Living system design Effective Qualitative Pattern thinking Living and whole systems WHOLE SYSTEM INTEGRATION PROCESS A process that seeks to optimise the relationships amongst key systems and entities in the service of desired objectives. It s not a system if it doesn t have a purpose. This process typically requires that the smallest unit of design be the largest manageable watershed within which the project resides. If we only work within the property boundaries, we are missing the point. AN ECOLOGY - HABITAT - PEOPLE - BUILDINGS - INFRASTRUCTURE - A WHOLE LIVING SYSTEM 10
