New Jersey Green Expo 2009 Turf and Landscape Conference

Using Proper Chemistry and Using Chemistry Properly Presented by: Rick Fletcher Cleary Chemical Corp.

Today we will discuss How to understand product failure Factors that separate good and bad applications

Product Development Today, from the eureka moment to registration is about 8 years and costs between $40-80 M depending on market. Years of research expose potential strengths and weaknesses. On the label, we provide you with Best practices for use What it can manage How much to use And when to reapply it

Where do I start in the field? Most Disease problems are Historic Know the pest What is it Where is it When is it active

Mycelium of S. homoeocarpa Photo courtesy of Dave Gardner

What's Next? Know the product Formulation/Tank mixing? How does the product move What is the mode of action

Tank Mixing 101 S-A-S-E Principle Suspensions Things that float (suspend) Water soluble bags, WDG s, DF s, WP s, Flowable suspensions Agitate Solutions Things that Dissolve in water Emulsions EC formulations

Product Placement and Movement Can Effect Control Contact v. Systemic? Placement and Movement Protectant Penetrant moving and non-moving Systemic

Placement and Movement Protectants Daconil, Legend, Protect, Spotrete, Terrazole, Medallion Localized Penetrants 26GT, Vorlan, Affirm, Compass Acropetal Penetrants 3336, Banner, Strider, Bayleton, Eagle, Trinity/Triton, Tourney, Heritage, Insignia, Disarm, Subdue, Banol Systemics Aliette, Alude

Location and Movement in a Monocot (turf) Untreated due to growth and product movement

Location and Movement in a Dicot (ornamental) Unprotected due to growth and product movement

Mode of Action What is the FRAC System? World wide system of grouping fungicides by Modes of Action (MOA) Each MOA is given a unique number GROUP 1 FUNGICIDE

How do I use the FRAC System? Use the MOA chart for the products you are applying Check your application program to make sure you are not using the SAME number in a tank mix or sequential rotation Exception: M Class products

Resources Publications FRAC List 1 TB New Symbols for Chemical Management TB Turf and Ornamental Fungicide MOA Groups

Where do I start? Apply it right Application equipment choices and techniques have a big impact on eventual control Spray volume, nozzle selection, rates, re-application intervals are critical

Effects of Spray Equipment

Effects of Spray Equipment When was your system last calibrated? How was it calibrated Have you adjusted for plant type and growth stage, and considered the location of the pest.

Effects of Spray Volume The GPA and Pressure/Nozzle selection are important for plant coverage Plant coverage PLUS product movement provide control.

Gather your information GPA, and equipment Speed are essential to start. Use the following 2-step formula 1) Total GPM = MPH*BW*GPA 495 2) Nozzle GPM = Total GPM # Nozzles Take this information and compare it to your current set-up Typically there are 12 nozzles at 20 inch spacing on a 20 foot boom

Calibration Calculation Total GPM (Gallon per minute) 3.5 mph x 20 ft boom x 66 GPA/495 = /12 =.77 GPM per nozzle So you would need a nozzle that applied.77 gallons of product per minute 8008 or recommended here There are other formulas that assume the 20/20/12 rule and use 5940 as the dividing factor (495x12)

Now change the speed by 1 mph and watch the effect on nozzle selection 4.5 mph x 20 ft boom x 66 GPA/495 = /12 = 1 GPM per nozzle Now you need a 8010 or nozzle Your 8008 is now off by over 25% Speed Kills your application

Location, Location, Location Get the product to your problem

What are the effects of stretching application intervals? Remember We give you three pieces of information on each product label 1. What pest will it manage 2. How much should you use 3. When should you re-apply it.

Protectant Spray Interval Over Time Concentration Time Exposure without control Typical Protectant Chemical Disease Population

Penetrant Spray Interval Over Time Concentration Time Exposure without control Typical Systemic Chemical Disease Population

What about formulations? In today s post patent world, active ingredients are made many ways in different locations. When sold, their formulations can be as unique as the AI source Formulation does matter!

CHECK BRANDED GENERIC Turf Disease Management Programs B. Martin, Clemson 2007

Dollar Spot W. Uddin, PSU, # infection center/sqft UTC 3336 WP 2 oz Topsin 70W 1.43 oz TM oz 0 17-Jun 29-Jul 5-Aug 13-Aug

What if you really have failure due to resistance Exposure of pest to chemical can select or train for mutation Appearance linked to number of exposures and rate of pathogen growth Resistance is inheritable Resistance is accumulated

Progression of Resistance Loss of economic control levels

What important turf diseases have shown tolerance? Dollar Spot Anthracnose Gray Leaf Spot Pythium Pink Snow Mold

The Two Schools of Resistance Management Use Until Failure You only have so many bullets Empty the gun Tank Mixing or Rotation w/ different MOA s You only have so many guns Use all the weapons in your arsenal in a plan

Dollar Spot Fungicide Trial R. Kane, L. Miller, Midwest Golf House, Fairway #3, check 3336 F 4 floz 14d Banner 1 floz 21d 26/ oz 21d Spectro 3.8 oz 14d Jul Jul Aug Aug Aug Sep Use it until you lose it Data for efficacy on Group 1+3 tolerant Dollar Spot

Is Insect Management The Same? Entomologists previously differed on product use strategy. Recommendations driven by pest Are they mobile? Do they produce multiple generations in the same spot? If mobile and single generation Alternate or Tank Mix If non-mobile and multi-generational Tank mix

In summary Plan be preventative based on history Calibrate to your GPA, Nozzles, and Speed Mixing has rules, use S-A-S-E Locate the product properly Rotate modes of action Tank mixing delays resistance better than alternation for most diseases Alternate for mobile, single-generation insects, other wise tank mix

What is the Consultants role? Consult on the pest What is it, where is it, and when is it active Consult on product recommendations How does the product move What is the mode of action Advise on proper application Mixing, Spray volume, nozzle selection, rates, re-application intervals
