Fire Safety Presenter, Kevin V Coleman September 14 th 2016
Fire is a significant risk
WHAT IS FIRE? To start or continue to burn, a fire requires: Heat; Fuel (Combustible materials); Oxygen. This is known as The Fire Triangle A fire naturally occurs when the elements are combined in the right mixture
The Fire Triangle Oxygen Without sufficient Oxygen, a fire cannot begin or continue to burn. If the Oxygen is REMOVED the fire will stop burning Remove the Oxygen by using HEAT a fire extinguisher: Dry Powder; Carbon Dioxide; Foam; FUEL Fire Blanket. OXYGEN
Fire Triangle Fuel Without FUEL (Combustible materials), a fire cannot begin or continue to burn. Fuel can be removed: Naturally - Where the fire consumes all the available combustible materials. Artificially - Mechanically or Chemically achieved using fire extinguishers: - Dry Powder; - Carbon Dioxide (CO 2 ). HEAT FUEL OXYGEN
Fire Triangle - Heat Without sufficient HEAT, a fire cannot begin or continue to burn. Heat can be removed by spraying particles of powder or gases into the flames which removes heat from the flames in the same manner as water would. Remove the heat by using a fire extinguisher: Dry Powder; Carbon Dioxide; Foam Extinguisher. HEAT FUEL OXYGEN
SOURCES OF IGNITION Smoking is the No 1 cause of fire Failure to switch off electrical appliances after the end of a workday and overloading Heaters with clothing over them Contractors tools and equipment Abuse of Machinery or equipment etc. Hazardous chemicals including waste (e.g. paints / oils / greases); Rubbish Bins.
Potential Ignition Sources continue Wood, Paper and Cardboard; Welding, Cutting and Grinding activities (Hot works); Diesel storage tanks; Used Oils & Containers; Electrical Power Tools & Extension Leads; Unsafe electrical Connections / Adapters / Over loading;
Fire Prevention Golden Rules No Smoking - other than in designated places. ONLY Trained Workers to conduct Hot Works. Dedicated Hazardous Material Storage. ONLY use Authorized plugs / sockets / adapters. Do NOT bypass electrical safeguards.
Fire Prevention Golden Rules Ensure extension cables are kept free from access to prevent damage / cuts (short circuits). Switch off / Unplug unused Electrical items. Report any damaged electrical tool / socket / plug / lead Do NOT use them. Remove wastes frequently to reduce build up.
Fighting the fire To put out the fire you must remove one of the three main elements of the fire. Heat Material / Fuel Oxygen This can be done with a fire fighting equipment but which one to use on what fire?
FIRE EXTINGUISHER FEATURES Locking pin Carrying handle / operating lever Pressure gauge (Not on CO2) Discharge Nozzle or horn Label : - Type (Water, C02, Dry Chemical, Foam) - Fire Classification (A, B, C) - Capacity Rating - Instructions
USING A FIRE EXTINGUISHER Remember the PASS word: 1. Keep your back to a clear escape route; 2. Stand back 1.8m to 2.4m from the fire; P.A.S.S. PULL AIM SQUEEZE SWEEP
Water based extinguisher Used for type (A) fire Red cylinder Last 60 sec 6M WATER FIRE EXTINGUISHERS are especially designed for tackling Class A fires (wood, paper, straw, textiles
Foam fire extinguisher Used for type (A) & (B) Fires Red or Cream cylinder Last 75 sec 4M ideally for both class A & B fire risks exist. Aqueous Film Forming Foam or AFFF is particularly suited to fight liquid spill fires such as petrol, oil, fats, paints etc. and works by forming a film on the liquid to extinguish the fire.
CO2 fire extinguisher. Used for type (A),(B),(C) (D) (F or K) Fires Red or Black Cylinder Last sec 1.2 M It has long cone nozzle Can be used on any fires BUT may have to use again and again to cool things down NOTE do not hold the nozzle
Dry powder fire extinguisher. Used for type (A),(B),(C) (D) ( F or K) Fires Red or Blue Cylinder Last 45 sec 6M especially suited to mixed fire risk environments and a good all round extinguisher. They are also suitable for flammable liquid risk, such as methane, propane, hydrogen, natural gas etc
AFTER USING AN EXTINGUISHER REMEMBER, REPORT TO HSE DEPT / SUPERVISOR IMMEDIATELY SO THAT EXTINGUISHER CAN BE REPLACED ASAP
Fire blanket. Used for Type (B) (F) (K) fire Used in kitchen.
Hose reels and flaked hose These supply water from the fire mains
ALARM 1 st Fire detection system (automatically) 2 nd Visual alarm or call (Manual)
Alarm triggered automatically Fire detection system
ALARM 2 Manual activation of the alarm
on an internal phone Activate a Fire pull station Call in on a radio on a mobile
IF YOU DISCOVER A FIRE Step 1 You MUST raise the alarm (FIRE, FIRE, FIRE) Step 2 Fight the fire quickly but only if you are competent and comfortable Step 3 Contain the fire by closing doors and windows Step 4 Gather up the people around you and proceed to the nearest exit Step 5 Report to one of the fire assembly point the one nearest the exit
IF THE FIRE EVACUATION ALARM SOUNDS Stay calm - do not panic Shut off electrical equipment Close all the windows and doors Alert others and take them with you Proceed to the nearest emergency exit and leave the building Go to the assembly point. Make sure everyone is accounted for Do not re-enter the building until the All Clear is given
ALWAYS USE FIRE EVACUATION RULES Use the Staircase Do not run Do not panic
REMEMBER... In the presence of smoke, cover your nose and mouth and stay low to the floor Check doors for heat before opening them DO NOT re-enter the building until the All Clear is given
