SUSTAINABILITY IS NO LONGER A QUESTION OF TREND... FROM THE CURRENT GENERATION ONWARD IT IS, AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE, AN ELEMENTAL STITCH IN THE FABRIC OF OUR LIFE. SO WROTE DAVIDE BOLLATI CHAIRMAN AND OWNER OF DAVINES IN THE FOREWARD TO ECO SALON, A BOOK DAVINES PUBLISHED IN 2012 THAT PROFILED TWENTY SALONS WHO TRULY EMBODY SUSTAINABILITY. THE ECO SALON GUIDE OFFERS A RICH SUMMARY OF SOME OF THE MORE UNIQUE LESSONS WE LEARNED FROM THESE TWENTY PIONEERING SALONS, ALONG WITH OTHER CORE ECO-TIPS. ENJOY AND PUT IT TO GOOD USE. ECO SALON GUIDE
REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE Here is a collection of tips that will help your salon follow these three golden goals. 1 USE RENEWABLE ENERGY. ASK YOUR LOCAL UTILITIES/ENERGY COMPANY. 2 USE LOW-ENERGY LIGHTING BY CHOOSING LIGHT BULBS MARKED CFL. THEY LAST 10 TIMES LONGER AND USE 66% LESS ENERGY THAN INCANDESCENT BULBS. 3 REMEMBER TO CLEAN YOUR SALON S WINDOWS. MAKE THE MOST OF THE NATURAL LIGHT AND REDUCE YOUR ELECTRICITY BILL TO A MINIMUM BY KEEPING THE SALON S WINDOWS CLEAN. NATURAL LIGHT IS ALSO IDEAL FOR READING YOUR CLIENT S COLOUR. 4 IF POSSIBLE, INSTALL SOLAR PANELS TO PRODUCE YOUR OWN ENERGY. 5 INSTALL AUTOMATIC SYSTEMS TO CONTROL THE TEMPERATURE IN THE SALON. 6 EQUIP YOUR SALON WITH RECYCLING BINS FOR PAPER, PLASTICS, GLASS AND HAIR COLOURING TUBES, FOILS FOR MECHES.
7 AVOID USING THROW AWAY ITEMS. BUYING ITEMS MADE TO LAST IS ONE OF THE SIMPLEST WAYS TO CUT DOWN ON WASTE AND TO SAVE THE ENERGY REQUIRED TO DISPOSE OF THEM. 8 ENCOURAGE REUSING BOTTLES FROM SHAMPOO AND OTHER RETAIL PRODUCTS WITH SPECIAL REFILL PROGRAMMES. 9 OFFER RECYCLING DISCOUNTS. FOR EXAMPLE, FOR EVERY CONTAINER BROUGHT BACK TO THE SALON APPLY A DISCOUNT TO YOUR CLIENT S NEXT PRODUCT PURCHASE. 10 LOOK INTO ORGANIZATIONS THAT ALLOW YOU TO DONATE HAIR FOR ENVIRONMENTAL CLEAN-UP PROJECTS. 11 IF POSSIBLE, CONSIDER USING AS MANY RECYCLED OR REPURPOSED MATERIALS AS POSSIBLE FOR FURNITURE AND DECOR, ESPECIALLY IF YOU CAN SUPPORT LOCAL COMPANIES. 12 USE GLOVES AS MANY TIMES AS POSSIBLE BEFORE DISPOSING OF THEM. 13 RECOMMEND TO YOUR CLIENTS PURCHASING 1000ML PRODUCTS TO REFILL SMALLER SIZES. 14. REUSE DAVINES/ESSENTIAL HAIRCARE CONTAINERS AS PLANT HOLDERS.
PAPER & WATER & PLANTS So many sustainable actions are based on using and/or saving these three things. 1 ALWAYS TURN OFF THE TAP WHEN YOU MASSAGING IN PRODUCTS DURING A HAIR WASH. 2 INSTEAD OF OFFERING CLIENTS BOTTLED WATER, INVEST IN A WATER PURIFICATION SYSTEM THAT CONNECTS DIRECTLY TO THE PIPES UNDER YOUR SALON S KITCHEN SINK AND PURIFIES TAP WATER. 3 WASH LINENS IN COLD WATER. USING YOUR WASHING-MACHINE S COLD-WATER PROGRAMME AVOIDS PRODUCING LARGE QUANTITIES OF CO2. 4 LEARN ABOUT NEW TECHNOLOGIES. LOW CONSUMPTION FLUSH TOILETS, DUAL FLUSH SYSTEMS, HIGH ENERGY-EFFICIENCY WASHING MACHINES AND DISHWASHERS AND TAP AERATORS ARE ALL WAYS TO SAVE WATER. 5 INVITE CLIENTS TO REUSE YOUR SHOPPING BAGS, OFFERING A DISCOUNT ON FUTURE PURCHASES IF THEY RETURN WITH THE SAME BAG. 6 SAY GOODBYE TO PAPER INVITATIONS AND FLYERS AND JUST USE AND SOCIAL MEDIA.
7 PRODUCE OXYGEN: USE SOME POTTED PLANTS IN YOUR SALON. THE OXYGEN PRODUCED BY GREEN PLANTS BALANCES OUT C02 EMISSIONS. 8 GET CLOSER TO NATURE! WITH JUST A LITTLE SPACE (INDOORS OR OUTDOORS) YOU CAN CREATE AN ORGANIC HERB GARDEN. USE THE HERBS TO MAKE YOUR OWN TEAS OR HERBAL WATER FOR YOUR CLIENTS. 9 IF YOU HAVE THE ACCESS, A ROOF GARDEN WILL PROVIDE NATURAL INSULATION FOR YOUR SALON AND A GREAT SOURCE OF HERBS AND VEGETABLES FOR YOUR CLIENTS AND STAFF. 10 CLEAN WITH ECO-FRIENDLY PRODUCTS. THIS WILL REDUCE WATER POLLUTION. 11 FIX LEAKING TAPS. SIMPLE PLUMBING MAINTENANCE IS PROBABLY THE CHEAPEST AND EASIEST WAY TO SAVE MONEY. 12 ONLY USE YOUR WASHING MACHINE WHEN IT S FULL. 13 TRAIN YOUR STAFF ABOUT SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH MONTHLY MEETINGS. 14. COLLECT RAINWATER TO WATER PLANTS.
IN THE FOLLOWING FEW PAGES WE RE PLEASED TO SHARE TIPS FROM SIX SALONS WHO HAVE TAKEN A VERY CREATIVE AND DYNAMIC APPROACH TO SALON SUSTAINABILITY. THEIR WEBSITES ARE INCLUDED IF YOU ARE CURIOUS TO LEARN MORE.
ECO CHIC EVENINGS As told by Egidia Bonomini, owner of Bonomini in Bristol, UK CREATIVE RECYCLING As told by Jennifer Borneman, owner of Bottega in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA We organise eco-chic evenings once a month and ask our clients to bring along any clothes or accessories that they don t use any more, and swap them with their clients. You come in with something old and go out with something new free shopping! Our shop was constructed with materials from the local Habitat for Humanity. Bottega is an example of how we can recyle and create something artistic and profitable at the same time... Local farmers use our cut hair to create compost and prevent deer from damaging their crops.
ETHICS & ESTHETICS As told by Tone Frayne, owner of Hope Hair in Oslo, Norway CONSUMER INCENTIVES As told by Jamie Bushman, owner of The Circle Salon in Chicago, USA The reception, retail corner and multi-use cottage are all made of recycled teak from Norwegian navy ships. The wardrobe is made of birch wood, so coats and hats create interesting shape games with the branches. Even the wastepaper baskets are in recyled rubber from old tyres. We don t give customers paper bags we encourage them to use the Davines shopping bag, offering them a 10% discount on future purchases if they return with the same bag.
LEAVE THE CAR AT HOME As told by the ex-owner of Arabella in Portland, Oregon, USA THERE S AN APP FOR THAT As told by Bethany Magliacane, owner of Laboratorie in Baltimore, Maryland, USA We encourage customers not to use their cars by offering a 10% discount if they come to the salon by bus, bike or on foot. Every workstation has an ipad that activates an app synchronized with our salon software to visualize the stylist s file being worked on, so there is no need to print it. During the first year, the system enabled us to use only one 500-sheet ream of paper.
ECO SALON CHECKLIST Keeping track of your evolution as an eco salon can be dizzying. This checklist will help. Use renewable energy. Ask your local utilities/energy company. Use low-energy lighting by choosing light bulbs marked CFL. They last 10 times longer and use 66% less energy than incandescent bulbs. Encourage reusing bottles from shampoo and other retail products with special refill programmes. Offer recycling discounts. For example, for every container brought back to the salon apply a discount to your client s next product purchase. Instead of offering clients bottled water, invest in a water purification system that connects directly to the pipes under your salon s kitchen sink and purifies tap water. Wash linens in cold water. using your washing-machine s cold-water programme avoids producing large quantities of CO2. Learn about new technologies. low consumption flush toilets, dual flush systems, high energy-efficiency washing machines and dishwashers and tap aerators are all ways to save water. Clean with eco-friendly products. This will reduce water pollution. Fix leaking taps. Simple plumbing maintenance is probably the cheapest and easiest way to save money. Only use your washing machine when it s full. Train your staff about consumption through monthly meetings. Remember to clean your salon s windows. Make the most of the natural light and reduce your electricity bill to a minimum by keeping the salon s windows clean. Natural light is also ideal for reading your client s colour. If possible, install solar panels to produce your own energy. Install automatic systems to control the temperature in the salon. Equip your salon with recycling bins for paper, plastics, glass and hair colouring tubes, foils for meches. Avoid using throw away items. Buying items made to last is one of the simplest ways to cut down on waste and to save the energy required to dispose of them. Look into organizations that allow you to donate hair for environmental clean-up projects. If possible, consider using as many recycled or repurposed materials as possible for furniture and decor, especially if you can support local companies. Use gloves as many times as possible before disposing of them. Recommend to your clients purchasing 1000ml products to refill smaller sizes. Reuse Davines / Essential Haircare containers as plant holders. Always turn off the tap when you massaging in products during a hair wash. Invite clients to reuse your shopping bags, offering a discount on future purchases if they return with the same bag. Say goodbye to paper invitations and flyers and just use and social media. Produce oxygen: use some potted plants in your salon. The oxygen produced by green plants balances out carbon dioxide emissions Get closer to Nature! With just a little space (indoors and outdoors) you can create an organic herb garden. Use the herbs to make your own teas or herbal water for your clients. If you have the access, a roof garden will provide natural insulation for your salon and a great source of herbs and vegetables for your clients and staff. Collect rainwater to water plants. Inspire customers not to use their cars by offering a discount if they come to the salon by bus, bike or on foot. Encourage clients to us a Davines shopping bag, offering them a discount on future purchases if they return with the same bag. Are you fashion-minded? Try organizing eco-chic evenings periodically and ask your clients to bring any clothes or accessories that they don t use any more to swap with other clients. Free shopping! Use an ipad at each workstation to manage client appointments and other information. It s more efficient and will save a lot of paper.
