This serial number must be quoted in all correspondence NB PRIOR TO INSTALLATION, ENSURE THAT THE LOCAL DISTRIBUTION CONDITIONS (IDENTIFICATION OF THE TYPE OF GAS AND PRESSURE) AND THE ADJUSTMENT OF THE APPLIANCE ARE COMPATIBLE The use of a fireguard conforming to BS 6539 is recommended when the appliance is used in the presence of young children, the elderly or infirm The countries of destination are GB & IE 0087 INSTALLER!! IN THE EVENT OF A PROBLEM DURING INSTALLATION, PLEASE CALL THE FOLLOWING NUMBER BEFORE LEAVING SITE. THIS NUMBER IS SOLAR FIRES UK WHO ACT AS OUR TECHNICAL CONSULTANTS. Tel: +44 (0) Fax: +44 (0) NOTE: Any person and the company they may represent, who carry out any gas work or flue alterations becomes legally bound for the safety of all gas appliances on the premises. For this reason a Gas Soundness Test should be carried out to establish the safety of all the pipework on the premises before any new work begins. Should any appliance or pipe system be found to be unsafe these should be isolated so they may not be used 1

GENERAL INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS The law demands that all gas appliances are installed and serviced by a qualified installer in accordance with the current GAS SAFETY (INSTALLATION AND USE) REGULATIONS OR RULES IN FORCE. The installation must comply with these installation instructions and all relevant parts of Local and National Building Regulations issued by the Department of the environment and Local and National Building Standards (Scotland Consolidation) Regulations issued by the Scottish Development Department, as well as those relevant recommendations of the following standards: BS 5440: PARTS 1 & 2, BS 6539, BS 6891, BS 5871: PART 2 The Flue The effective flue height must be 3 metres (10 feet) minimum and should have a minimum internal diameter of 175mm (7 in) or a 225 x 225mm (9 x 9in) brick or stone chimney. For non-standard flues the cross sectional area should be at least 240-cm sq. The flue described above must serve no other appliance. Any flue damper should be permanently removed wherever practical. If impractical the flue damper should be fixed permanently open. Ensure there is a minimum crosssectional area as described above. The flue should be swept before the appliance is fitted except where the installation is to new premises and there is no obvious obstruction from birds nests etc. Any flue terminal should have outlets at least equivalent to twice its nominal flue area and conform to those recommended in BS 715 and BS Siting of terminals is given in BS 5440 Pt. 1.The use of a smoke pellet is recommended to check the flue system and confirm there is a flue pull at the fire opening and no leakage into other parts of the building. If so, do not install the fire and consult expert advice. The Hearth (If fitted) Non-combustible material at least 12.5mm (0.5 in) thick should form the base of any fire opening, upon which the appliance is sited. The hearth should protrude a minimum of 300mm (1 foot) in front of the fire and be at least 708mm (16 opening) or 758mm (18 opening) positioned symmetrically about the fire opening If a surround is to be used this must have a minimum temperature rating of at least 100 o C. Ventilation For installation in Ireland an airbrick must be installed in accordance with the Rules in Force. For the UK, secondary ventilation of minimum mm must be supplied and must be unobstructed at all times. The Fireplace The recess into which the Inset is to be fitted must be constructed of noncombustible materials. Use of RCF articles in this appliance This product uses fuel effect pieces containing Refractory Ceramic Fibre (RCF) which are man made vitreous silicate fibres. Excessive exposure to these materials may cause temporary irritation to eyes, skin and respiratory tract, consequently, it makes 2

sense to take care when handling these articles to ensure that the release of dust is kept to a minimum. Care should be taken to ensure soft furnishings or decorations, such as wallpaper, are not too near the appliance, as they may become discoloured or scorched. INSTALLING THE APPLIANCE Remove the ceramic components from their packaging and check contents and that they are not damaged. Also remove base board from the fire, taking care not to damage the long, thin fibre burner situated near the front and just behind the front coal block. To ensure release of fibres from these RCF articles is kept to a minimum, during installation and servicing, we recommend that you use HEPA filtered vacuum to remove any dust accumulated in and around the fire, before and after working on the fire. When replacing these articles we recommend that the replaced items are not broken up, but are sealed within heavy duty polythene bags, clearly labelled as RCF waste. This is not classified as "hazardous waste" and may be disposed of at a tipping site licensed for disposal of industrial waste. Protective clothing is not required when handling these articles, but we recommend you follow the normal hygiene rules of not smoking, eating or drinking in the work area and always wash your hands before eating or drinking. Check that the appliance is the correct gas category before installing. Check that the ignition system functions correctly. Press in and turn the valve anticlockwise to the ignition position. This will generate a spark from the electrode. If not -check leads for soundness. Check the tightness of the nut at the control valve end of the thermocouple NB: DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN. The gas supply for the appliance should be routed from the meter to a convenient point to the fireplace. An isolating gas tap must be fitted at this point, to enable the gas supply to be isolated. Cut and form a piece of 8mm pipe and run into the fireplace opening. The gas supply pipe should not pass directly under the bed of the fire. NB: only rigid or semi-rigid pipe is acceptable. If a concealed fitting is required, then the gas supply pipe must be sleeved when passing through masonry. The pipe must be wrapped with PVC tape where it passes through chimney space. Place the appliance in the centre of the fireplace opening ensuring that no part projects beyond the vertical opening of the fireplace (See Fig 3). Fig 3 3

Connect the 8mm-supply pipe to the pressure test elbow using the nut and olive provided. NB: The use of 8mm-diameter supply pipe must not exceed 1 metre in length as this may restrict the gas flow to the appliance. Fit the cast and surround to the opening insert the burner and finalise pipework. TURN ON THE GAS SUPPLY and purge the gas line to the burner. To check for Gas Soundness use a water manometer. All joints should be in accordance with BS Assembling the Ceramics and Laying the Imitation Fuel (first option) Cast Inset Coals These fires are designed to fit standard cast back panels. The Crown will fit the majority of casts and the Cast will fit the larger versions. The Inset coal set consists of 4 large coals 16 medium random coals 16 small random coals Place the two large coals either side of the fire bed Place seven random coals to the front of the fire bed overlapping the coal front and matrix. Use the other random coals to build up the bed. Ensure that the coals are not tightly packed. Finish the coal bed with the small coals. (NB Diagrams are for general layout purposes and may not be the exact shape of the fire) 4

Assembling the ceramics and laying the coals (second option). Inset Fires Place tapered board in place locating behind steel lip as shown in Fig 2 and 2a. Insert ceramic burner blocks into the burner cavity (see FIG 2 and 2a). Place the tapered thermal board on top of the fire, behind the burner box. Ensure there is a gap between the bed and the burner box. (See Fig 2, 2a and 3). Insert burner blocks into burner box channel (see Fig 2, 2a and 3). Insert the coal block into the coal block support shelf. (if Supplied) Place large coals across the burner block and the round coals, as shown in FIG 2a and 3,randomly onto the bed, taking care equally place coals over each other. (NB Diagrams are for general layout purposes and may not be the exact shape of the fire) 5

Cast Inset Pebble Assemble the burner inserts into the space in the burner ribbon and trim to size if necessary. Assemble the burner beds into the front an back of the burner. With all the ceramic pieces assembled into the burner tray, assemble the pebbles as follows:- 1. Place a row or rows of pebbles to the front of the burner. 2. Place a row or rows of pebbles to the rear of the burner. 3. Place a row or rows of pebbles over the first rows. 4. Finish with any remaining pebbles. The number of rows of pebbles will depend on the size of the burner. IMPORTANT PLEASE NOTE THAT THE PEBBLES WILL CURE ON THE FIRE. THEY MAY GO BLACK INITIALLY, BUT RUN THE FIRE FOR ONE HOUR, LET THE FIRE COOL - TURN THE PEBBLES OVER AND RELIGHT THE FIRE. THE PEBBLES WILL THEN BE CLEAN. (NB Diagrams are for general layout purposes and may not be the exact shape of the fire) 6

Lighting the appliance manually Press in and turn the Main Burner Control tap, whilst keeping the control knob fully depressed anti-clockwise until the indicator is opposite IGN & PILOT. During this sequence the piezo will light the pilot. Check that the pilot has situated at the burner block level on the left-hand side, has lit. Keep the Main Burner Control knob depressed for approximately 20 seconds, then gently release the control ensuring the pilot flame stays lit. If the pilot flame goes out, repeat the process, holding the control knob for a slightly longer period. In the event of ignition failure the following method of lighting should be used: Press in and turn the main control anti-clockwise until the indicator is opposite PILOT/IGN. Keep fully depressed. The pilot may now be lit using a match or taper. Hold in for 10 seconds until the pilot is established. ONCE PILOT HAS ESTABLISHED Depress the control knob and turn anti-clockwise to the large flame position. The appliance will now light. Leave the fire on HIGH setting for a short while to enable it to reach its optimum condition, approximately 5 minutes. The gas control provides variable control between the HIGH and LOW flame. You can experiment to achieve your own requirements for the room size. REMOTE CONTROL (IF FITTED) Remote Control Type '1' - Standing Pilot Press in and turn the Main Burner Control tap, whilst keeping the control knob fully depressed anti-clockwise until the indicator is opposite IGN & PILOT. During this sequence the piezo will light the pilot. Check that the pilot has situated at the burner block level on the left-hand side has lit. When using the remote control to operate the fire, ensure that the main gas control is set to the HIGH (large flame position) for maximum efficiency. To Switch Fire On. Point the handset towards the fire. Press the two buttons simultaneously; the fire should cross light smoothly. To Switch the Fire Between High and Low Point the handset towards the fire Press the lower button once. The fire will go to low if on high or high if on low. To Switch the Fire to Standby Using Remote Control Point the handset towards the fire. Press the top button once, the fire should now extinguish, with the pilot remaining lit for future use. 7

To turn off temporarily push in and turn the main burner control clockwise to the IGN position. The pilot flame will remain lit, with the fire ready for immediate use. (Manual Controls) It is recommended that the fire be turned off completely if being left for long periods e.g. overnight. Check the Flame Safety Device (FSD) by turning the fire completely off. Wait 50 seconds, then fully depress the gas control, turn to IGN position and release control. Attempt to light the pilot with a match or taper. If the pilot lights, the FSD is faulty. (See Lighting the appliance) Remote Control Type '2' Automatic Ignition OFF & Reset High Fire Stand By Low fire Press OFF and Standby together to start the lighting sequence Ensure that the transmitter always has line of sight to the receiver on the burner Fitting the Battery to the Handset Before using the appliance remove the access cover in the rear of the handset and insert a 9 volt PP3 size battery. Connect the battery by pushing the connector on to the terminals. Make sure the battery is connected correctly. Replace the access cover. Using the Handset When using the handset make sure that it is pointed at the infrared signal receiver located just in front of the pilot burner at the right hand end of the main burner (the small black pad )See Figure 7. Unlike a TV control the fire does not react to a quick press on the button on the handset control. The buttons must be pressed and held until the control box under the burner acknowledges the signal by emitting a 'beep' sound (this can take two or three seconds). When the handset is emitting a signal the yellow LED at the top of the control will flash. Lighting the Fire To light the fire press the OFF and the STAND BY buttons together on the handset until the fire control box answers with a 'beep'. The fire will go through its start - up procedure by lighting first the pilot burner and then the main burner on high fire. This procedure takes about 30 seconds. If the fire does not light or there is no reaction when the two buttons are pressed, press the OFF button to 're-set' the control and try again. Adjusting the Flame Height To turn the fire from high to low press and release the low fire button as soon as the 'beep' is heard and the flame height will reduce. If the fire is set at high and a flame height between high and low fire is desired, press and continue to hold the low fire button after the 'beep' has sounded. The flame height will gradually decrease. Release the button when the desired height of flame is achieved. To turn the fire from low fire to high 8

fire press and (after the 'beep' is sounded) release the high fire button. To gradually increase the flame press and hold the button as described above for the low fire button. Turning the Fire OFF To turn the fire off but leave the pilot burner alight press the STAND-BY button until the 'beep' is heard. To turn the fire completely off press the OFF button. The STAND-BY button and the OFF button can be pressed when the flame is at any height. To light the main burner from the STAND-BY position press either the HIGH FIRE or LOW FIRE buttons. CHECKING FOR SPILLAGE. Before briefing the customer on how to use the fire, a spillage test must be carried out with the decorative fret in position. The following procedures must be followed: Close all doors in the room or space containing the appliance. Open any doors to adjoining rooms if there is an extractor fitted. Turn on the extractor and proceed as instructed below. Light the appliance and burn at high (large flame), and leave for 5 minutes. Light a smoke match and position it approximately 100mm (4") down from the top of the fire opening, and 30mm (1.2") into the fire opening from the front edge (See diagram). Run the match across the full width of the fire opening. All smoke should be drawn into the flue. If not, the test should be repeated after a further 10 minutes. If the smoke is still not drawn into the flue, further investigation is required. MAINTENANCE AND SERVICING Before any servicing is carried out, isolate the appliance from both the mains electricity supply and the gas supply. Always check for gas soundness and spillage after re-fitting the appliance. With the fire turned off and allowed to cool, carefully remove the coals and place on a dustsheet to prevent marks to the carpet. Lift out the matrix, ceramic burner inserts and ceramic inlays. Once the ceramics are removed from the burner, check that there is no debris collected or lodged in the burner slots (both front and rear). If cleaning is required, this may be done using a thin instrument or blade. A vacuum cleaner may be used to ensure that all lose debris and soot is removed. (DO NOT ATTEMPT TO VACUUM OR WASH THE COALS). Should any soot accumulation become excessive, the fuel effect pieces should be removed from the fire for cleaning. Cleaning should be carried out in a well-ventilated area or in the open air, by gently brushing the pieces, held away from your face so that you avoid inhaling the dust. We do not recommend the use of a normal domestic vacuum cleaner, which may blow dust back into the air. Remove the burner and check for sooty deposits. Also remove the fire case and check for any lose debris behind the case. Remove where necessary. Re-assemble in reverse order and refer to relevant sections for re-commissioning. Carefully re-assemble the ceramics and coals, as detailed in Assembling Ceramics Section. 9

Servicing the burner To service the burner assembly, it must be removed from the fire case. Isolate the gas and electric supply. Disconnect the gas supply at the inlet elbow, and the two unions on the supply pipes to the solenoid. By removing the retaining screw on the front panel, the tray will lift out. After re-fitting the burner, check all joints for gas soundness To clean the injector The injector is situated at the rear of the burner. To access the injector, remove the four screws retaining the front panel to the chassis. Draw the front panel forward, taking care to remove the fibre strip, the burner box will now slide forward. Check to ensure the injector is clean. Replace in reverse order. If it is necessary to remove the injector, undo the injector elbow compression nut and remove the short pipe. Unscrew the injector elbow from the venturi tube. The jet has a 1BA thread, which is sealed into the injector elbow. It is necessary to reseal the jet with Colourite or Loctite thread seal. Replacing the gas control Disconnect the gas pipes, unions, pilot tube and thermocouple. Pull off valve control knob and undo the retaining nut at the front of the valve. Disconnect the electrode lead and withdraw valve from assembly. Replace in reverse order. Replacing the Piezo Igniter The piezo igniter is integral to the gas control and cannot be replaced separately. Use manufacturers complete pilot burner assembly. Note FSD type A has an integral H.T lead, not type B. O.D.S. Pilot Assembly (Spillage Monitoring System) The pilot assembly is a non-serviceable component. A replacement is available from your stockist. ONLY A GENUINE REPLACEMENT MUST BE USED. NO ADJUSTMENT OR ALTERATION MUST BE MADE TO THE PILOT ASSEMBLY. THE INSTALLER MUST IN NO WAY OVER-RIDE THE PILOT SYSTEM. Replacing the Thermocouple The thermocouple is integral to the pilot assembly. To replace, undo the connection from rear of the control valve. Undo the pilot supply tube. Remove the pilot assembly and replace with genuine part. Briefing the User Demonstrate the full operation of the appliance to the user; with particular emphasis on the layout of the coals. Explain how the pilot is designed to shut off the fire should spillage be present in the room. Inform the customer that all cleaning procedures should only be carried out when the fire is cold and the gas is turned off at the control knob. Advise on the importance of annual servicing of the appliance and checking of the flue by a competent C.O.R.G.I. registered person, to maintain a high standard of safety. Advise the user that if dissatisfied with the performance, the controls should not be tampered with but coal layout can be altered as per the diagrams If expert assistance is needed, recommend that the retailer be contacted will be able to suggest a competent person for carrying out the work Indicate the tie-on label that the user must remove and read.
