6 Fire Safety Tried and tested thermo plastic intumescent plug The patented, petal design provides improved ventilation to maintain the life of the light source. For safety, it swells up to eighty times its size under extreme temperature conditions to seal the back of the fitting in the event of a fire. Traditional JCC fire-rated canned design This protects the heat sink from the build up of flammable dust and debris through the life of the fitting, inline with the Electrical Safety Council s recommendations. This also eliminates the need for a fire hood. Additional intumescent material Unlike many other fire-rated downlights, the Fireguard range includes an extra intumescent ring around the bezel to provide a robust seal around the ceiling cut out in the event of a fire. Discussions on lighting have traditionally meant using the term Watts. However, the high-efficiency of LED lighting means that discussion of energy consumption becomes much less relevant and the term lumens is becoming the primary measure of lighting performance. 9 What happens if there is some damage to the cut out hole when I remove the old downlights? Q&As Will the light output of Fireguard LED7 appear the same as the halogen equivalent? Yes, the lumen output is exceptionally high and is comparable to a 50W halogen downlight. This isn t a problem as the bezel on Fireguard LED7 is designed to be wide enough to cover any damage and leave a neat, tidy finish. Concealer rings and convertor plates are also available where cosmetic damage or a larger ceiling cut out is present. (see page 5) How easy are the new Fireguard LED7 downlights to install? No tools are required once the hole is cut in the ceiling. Fireguard LED7 downlights are designed to be very quick and easy to install. Each product comes with a loop in / loop out connector and push to fit terminal blocks. Can Fireguard LED7 downlights be dimmed? Why do I need to use fire-rated downlights? Most downlights have an open back and offer no seal or protection to the ceiling in the event of a fire. This means that the cut out hole has broken the fire-rating of the ceiling so heat and flames would be able to spread into upper floors. This is not true of fire-rated downlights which are designed to maintain a ceiling s fire protection integrity.
