Miljö- och hälsoskydd If you handle groceries this is how you sort your waste With all form of food handling waste will be accumulated. In order to affect the environment as little as possible it is important to handle the waste in the right way. The best way is of course to minimize the amount of waste, but for the waste that still accumulates it is important to do primary sorting! Septemberl 2013

Establishment owner's responsibility If you run a restaurant, a café, a grocery store or the like you are obligated to sort some types of waste. This applies for packaging made out of cardboard (paper), plastic, glass and metal, recycling paper and hazardous waste. These types of waste shall be sorted, held separately and handed in for recycling or for being taken care of. You are obliged to have knowledge about the waste your establishment produces and which rules apply. You are also obliged to use the opportunities for recycling and refuse that are being offered. In this pamphlet you will learn about different kinds of waste and what you should do with them. The pamphlet does not cover all kinds of waste and since you are responsible for your waste it is a good idea to contact the environment and public health administration if you have any questions. You can find the contact information on the last page of the pamphlet. Property owner's responsibility The property owner is responsible for: Making sure there's a container/duct for burnable waste. The container/duct is large enough. Making sure the way that leads to the container/duct is passable and is not slippery or full of snow. Fat separator is accessible and easy to empty. Making sure the fat separator is inspected and emptied Informing the tenants about the rules for waste disposal. Keeping the waste area clean both outside and inside the waste room is everybody s responsibility. Keep in mind! Only put waste in containers/ducts they're supposed to be in. The waste should be packaged so that no harm or any work environment problems arises.

Packaging and recycling paper For all packaging the producer responsibility is applied. That means the producer has to collect the packaging and refer to the recycling reception facility where it can be disposed without charge. The establishment owner is obliged to sort out the packaging and recycling paper from the waste and return it to the producers. You can do this by transporting it yourself to the recycling reception facility or order pick up service. What should be sorted is packaging made out of: glass, metal, plastic, paper and cardboard. Examples: newspapers, milk cartoons, corrugated paper, empty bottles, tin cans and plastic packaging. Yes, in this case you are allowed to transport it yourself. If the total amount is more than 10 ton (kg) or 50 m 3 you need to have permission from the county administrative board. Where should I hand it in? Packaging and recycling paper can be handed in to IL Recycling in Holmsund without any costs. You do have to give them a call before you go. IL Recycling, tel You can also go to Dåva Deponi to leave your packaging. Packaging and recycling paper can also be handed in to other entrepreneurs, but then you might have to make a deal with the entrepreneur. Yes, a simple and good way to get rid of this type of waste is to sign a deal with an entrepreneur. You will then receive a duct/container to collect your waste in and the entrepreneur will take care of the rest. There are several companies that will do this for you, IL Recycling, Allmiljö, Ragn-Sells and Stena Recycling. Establishment owners cannot use the recycling stations placed in specific spots around Umeå municipality. These are only for households and their waste. On the packaging and recycling papers home page you will find more information about sorting packaging. Visit

Food waste When dealing with groceries a large amount of food waste can arise. There's no law saying you as establishment owner need to sort out your food waste from the household waste, but sorting will bring benefits/help to the environment. It can also lower your costs for waste management. If you want to sort your food waste you should talk to your property owner and see if they can sign a deal with UMEVA. UMEVA provides ducts and smaller bags for food waste. For a kitchen serving more than 1500 portions a week, a food grinder connected to a tank has to be installed. Examples: Peel from fruits and vegetables, inedible food waste, left overs, coffee grounds. No, food waste can only be transported and collected by UMEVA. Where should I hand it in? In the brown duct, if you have one available. If not the food waste should be disposed in the green duct for burnable household waste. If you don't already have food waste collection from UMEVA you should contact your property owner and make him or her sign a deal with UMEVA.

Fat waste Fats in the sewer have become a problem. The pipes are not made for carrying fats and when fats and oils are flushed down it creates large problems with stoppage in the pipes. In order to prevent fats in the sewer an establishment that deals with food has to have a fat separator and a system for re-use of fats. Fat separator It is the property owner's responsibility to make sure there is a functioning fat separator and that it is emptied when needed, at least two times a year. UMEVA handles the emptying. Frying fat Fat should never be poured down the drains. Used fat for frying shall be collected for recycling. There are entrepreneurs that offer collection of fats and also can provide proper ducts for the fat. Examples: used frying oil and fat, cooking oil. No. Yes, SVEPROL and Svensk Fettåtervinning provide service for picking up used frying oil and fat.

Hazardous waste It is very important that hazardous waste is not mixed with household waste or flushed down the drain. When handled in the wrong way hazardous waste can cause harm for both humans and the environment. It is also important to package the hazardous waste in a correct way. Leaking chemicals and broken luminous tubes can harm personnel that handle hazardous waste. Examples: fluorescent lamp, low energy light bulbs, small batteries, electric waste, remnants of detergents. Yes, but you have to file a registration at the County Council before you go ahead. Where should I hand it in? Yes. You can order pick up service from an entrepreneur who has a permit to transport hazardous waste, for example IL Recycling, Allmiljö, Ragn-Sells and Stena Recycling. Dangerous Hazard can be handed in to an entrepreneur who has a permit for hazardous waste, for example Allmiljö and Ragn-Sells.

Residual/household waste When you ve sorted all waste that should go to recycling or being taken care of in other ways, you re left with residual/household waste, which is also called municipal solid waste. Municipal solid waste consists of everyday items that are discarded by the public. Examples: broken plastic items, ripped and non-usable textiles, rubbish from cleaning. No. Only UMEVA are allowed to transport residual waste. Where should I hand it in? You should seal it in a plastic bag and discard it in a green rubbish bin intended for burnable residual/household waste. UMEVA collects the refuse that is in the green rubbish bins. The property owner is responsible for making sure there are enough green rubbish bins for burnable residual waste on the property.
