Current smart thermostats available through retail channels have become popular to help homeowners save energy and money However, there are times when smart thermostats are not the best option for a heating and cooling system. When you are operating variable speed equipment, a proprietary thermostat will provide the best option for system and energy optimization. Note: Smart thermostat manufacturers are constantly improving their products and may eventually be able to run a variable speed equipment system at the same optimization as a proprietary thermostat 13

Adjusts setpoint when thermostat determines no one is home Possibly more energy savings due to the fact that many programmable thermostats remain in hold mode How Do They Work? Occupancy/motion sensors can be used to determine when no one is in the home and then adjust the setpoints to save energy Geofencing can use the locations services of your mobile phone to determine when no one is home and then the setpoints can be relaxed 27

A programming design allowing the thermostat to intelligently adapt beyond manual programming for greater efficiency, while still meeting ideal comfort levels How Does it Work? Homeowner sets upper and lower temp limits Algorithms determine the optimal setback and ramp up timing based on: Time length of each schedule period Conditions inside and outside Home and system characteristics Over time, algorithms learn how long it takes the system to recover given current conditions Learns system/house behavior and prevents thermostat from overshooting temperature Maximizes low-stage operation Does not use electric heat to return from setback 28

Reduces cold but clammy home conditions by removing moisture from the air System will continue to cool after cooling set point is reached Works on standard systems but best with ECM fans and dehum terminals How Does it Work? When in cooling mode, the system will overcool up to 3 degrees past the set point to dehumidify Works best when fan can be slowed down to about 65% capacity

Removes the last amounts of heating or cooling from the system and ductwork Primarily beneficial for older systems without a factory installed off delay Increases energy savings How Does it Work? Selectable off delay for heating or cooling Defaults to the longest off delay selected between the thermostat and indoor PSC fan coils or those configured with no off delay Note: Do not use for cooling mode in the Midwest 30

Especially useful in mild weather or seasons when the homeowner s system is not running frequently, this setting circulates the air in the home a minimum amount of time per hour How Does it Work? The fan will run for a selectable time every hour up to 55 minutes per hour Calls for heating or cooling are included in that runtime per hour Useful for ventilation code compliance instead of 3 rd party widget 31
