3 1. FOREWORD 2. INTRODUCTION This appliance is supplied with instructions for use and installation. The instructions for use are intended for the consumer and besides information about the use of your appliance, the booklet also includes advice on safety and maintenance. In compiling the installation instructions, it has been assumed that the appliance will be installed by a qualified gas-fitter who is familiar with both national and local regulations Please keep this book safely for future use. In addition to information about setting-up the appliance, its operation and maintenance, these instructions for use also contain advice about its safe use. The appliance is fully protected by means of a modulating thermostatic switch and a thermoelectric pilot flame safety device to prevent the accidental escape of gas from the main burner. The appliance is protected by a thermal safety device (TSD). This safety device switches the appliance off if flue gases spread through the room. This can happen if there is insufficient ventilation and/or if the flue does not work properly. The appliance is available with a steel mantle or soapstone or ceramic covering. Should it prove necessary, due to moving house for instance, the flue outlet can be moved from the top to the rear of the fireplace or vice versa. A conversion kit is available from Faber International for this purpose. 2 3

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS Before installation, ensure that the local distribution conditions (identification of the type gas and pressure) and the adjustment of the appliance are compatible. This gas appliance is factory set and shall not be adjusted by the installer. General safety Note: Since the appliance is a source of heat, circulation of air occurs. Therefore it is of importance that you do not use the appliance shortly after a renovation of the home. Because of the natural circulation of air, moist and volatile components from paint, building materials, carpet etc. will be attracted. These components can settle themselves down onto cold surfaces in the form of soot. As on all heat producing appliances, soft furnishings such as blown vinyl wallpaper placed too near to the appliance may become scorched or discoloured. This should be born in mind when installing the appliance. It is the law in the UK that all gas appliances, are installed by a competent person in accordance with the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations (As amended), the relevant British Standards for Installation work, Building Regulations, Codes of Practice and the manufacturers instructions. The installation should also be carried out in accordance with the following where relevant; The installation should also be carried out in accordance with the following where relevant; BS8303 BS5440 Parts 1&2 BS6891 BS5871 Part1 BS715 BS1251 Building Regulations and Standards issued as relevant by the Department of the Environment or the Scottish Development Department. In the Republic of Ireland installation should be carried out in accordance with IS813, ICP3, IS327, Building Regulations, Codes of Practice, the manufacturers instructions and any other rules in force. 4 Failure to comply with the above could leave the installer liable to prosecution and invalidate the appliance warranty 5

5 4. INSTRUCTIONS FOR INSTALLATION 4.3 OPENING THE DOOR 4.1 GAS CONNECTION A G3/8" gas connection should be made with a (CE approved) G1/2" stopcock in the supply pipe, in the chimney. Be sure that the controls do not get twisted during connection. Avoid tension on the controls and the gas line. Once the gas is connected, check all fittings for leaks. 4.2 PLACING OF THE APPLIANCE Place the base of the fireplace at least 5 cm from the chimney breast. Connect the appliance to the gas supply.the appliance is fitted with a pressure regulator. Check all the gas connections for leaks. Use soapy water and/or a gas-leak detector. Connect the fireplace to the chimney pipe. A 100 mm ø pipe should be connected to the rear flue outlet. A 150 mm ø pipe or a 100 mm ø pipe with a 150 mm ø decorative pipe should be connected to the top flue outlet. Corrosion-resistant material should be used to make the joint between the outlet and the chimney pipe. This connection pipe should never be attached lower than the flue outlet itself. In the event the flue outlet is connected to the chimney pipe by means of an elongated pipe, this should be attached at an upward gradient of at least 2% as viewed from the flue outlet. To avoid condensation forming in a brick chimney and improve the draught, if necessary the chimney should be fitted with an aluminium or stainless steel pipe with a minimum diameter of 100 mm. Attach the thermostat sensor to the skirting using the clip provided. 4.4 LOG SET Fig. 1 opening the door The fireplace door can be opened by first loosening the screw in the door handle, on the left-hand side of the window, then lifting the handle itself (see fig. 1). Note! To ensure proper burning, the log set may only be arranged according to the instructions provided by Faber International (see fig. 2). Other placement can cause soot. Fig. 2 log set Before arranging the log set, scatter the bag of embers over the burner. Place the longest log on the far right of the firebox, with its end resting on the support in the middle. Place the shorter log on the left, with its end resting against that of the first log, in the middle of the burner zone. Place the final log diagonally over the first two, with one end at the foot of the right-hand log and the other around the middle of the left-hand one. 6 Close the door after arranging the log set. 7

6 5. CONVERTING THE FLUE The fireplace is supplied as standard with the flue outlet on the top. The outlet can be converted from the top to the rear as follows. However, you will require a blank top plate, which can be ordered from Faber, to do so. Should you wish to convert a fireplace with a rear outlet to a top outlet, simply carry out the following instructions in reverse order. 6. CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE The appliance must be cleaned and checked annually by an authorized installer. This applies for the Direct-vent system as wel. Check that: - the gas supply, combustion chamber and flue gas vent systems are all airtight; - the regulator and the thermocouple circuit function properly and that the burner ignites properly Clean (if necessary): - the pilot system; - the burner; - the combustion chamber; - the flue gas exhaust.r. - Release the square cover plate (1) from the rear of the fireplace by loosening the screws. - Detach the rear panel (2) from the fireplace. 1 - Remove the round blank (3) from the flue aperture - Screw the 100 mm flue outlet (1) to the rear flue aperture. - Refit the rear panel (3) to the fireplace. - Screw the round blank to the top flue aperture. - Fit a blank top plate (2) to the fireplace. This can be ordered from Faber. - Connect the rear flue outlet to the chimney pipe. 2 3 Fig. 3 removing the cover plates Fig. 4 fitting the flue outlet 6.1 CLEANING THE GLASS Depending on the intensity of use, a layer may in time form on the glass. This layer can be removed with a special glass cleaner or ceramic cook-top cleaner. Follow the instructions on the package. We advise you to have the appliance cleaned by an authorised installer. An improperly working flue and logs in the wrong positions will cause the glass to become dirtie 6.2 CARE OF THE COATED PARTS AND CERAMICS Polish the coated finish with a soft duster. Remove any stains using a damp cloth or lukewarm water once the fireplace has cooled down. Never use scouring agents, petrol, paraffin or other solvents to clean the fireplace. 6.3 CARE OF THE SOAPSTONE Use soap and water to remove any dirt or grease from the soapstone (remove the stones from the fireplace first). Minor scratches can be removed using fine sandpaper (240 grey waterproof). 8 9

8 7. FAULTS 8. DISPOSAL OF THE PACKAGING AND PROBLEM Appliance will not light or goes out. CAUSE - Air in the supply pipe (after appliance has not been in use). - Insufficient gas pressure. - The pilot flame is dirty. - The thermocouple contact does not engage properly. SOLUTION - Venting. - Check that the gas tap is open and check the gas line to see if it is dirty. - Clean the burner carefully with a vacuum cleaner. - Check the thermocouple circuit. THE APPLIANCE The appliance packaging is recyclable. The packaging could include the following materials: - cardboard; - CFC-free foam (soft); - wood; - plastic; - paper. These materials should be disposed responsibly and in conformity with government regulations. Information on how to responsibly dispose of discarded appliances can be obtained from the local authorities. - The Thermal Safety Device (TSD) is switched on. - The TSD switches on if combustion gases flow into the room because they cannot escape through the flue. Make sure that the flue operates correctly and provide good ventilation. If the TSD comes into operation frequently, you should contact the installer. Poor flame distribution. - The logs are not positioned properly. - Arrange the log set properly The burner is quite dirty because of ash from combustible materials has gotten into the burner. - Clean the burner carefully with a vacuum cleaner. Be careful not to damage the burner with the sharp edges of the vacuum cleaner. 13
