6 Refrigeration Rebate Worksheet Appendix High-Efficiency Refrigeration/ Freezer Cases Measure Description: This measure applies to the installation of highefficiency refrigeration and freezer cases that exceed minimum federal efficiency standards. How It Saves Energy: Equipment exceeding minimum standards for energy efficiency use less energy to produce the same amount of cooling. Eligibility: To be eligible, refrigerators and freezers must be selfcontained and have vertically closed glass or solid doors. This measure applies only to new construction or equipment replacing refrigerator cases that have failed or that will fail imminently. Refrigerated Display Cases with Zero Heat Doors Replacing Open Cases Measure Description: This measure applies to the replacement of functioning existing, medium temperature, vertical open display cases with new closed display cases. The doors on the new cases must be no sweat (also known as zero heat). The display cases must be medium temperature (typically for dairy, meats, or beverages) as opposed to low temperature (typically for frozen food and ice cream). How It Saves Energy: By reducing air infiltration into an open refrigerated case, there is reduced load on the refrigeration system and, hence, less compressor energy usage needed. Eligibility: This applies only to the replacement of vertical open display cases with new closed display cases having no anti-sweat heater controls (zero energy doors). Horizontal cases are not eligible and should be submitted as custom. If a lighting retrofit is included with the new case, it must consume the same amount of energy or less than the old lighting. Upgrades to lighting or other system components should be submitted separately. Anti-Sweat Heater Controls Measure Description: Anti-sweat heater (ASH) controls sense humidity outside of reach-in, glass door refrigerated cases and turn off electric anti-sweat door heaters during periods of low humidity, when condensation would be unlikely. How It Saves Energy: Without controls, anti-sweat heaters run continuously regardless of the potential for condensation. Savings are realized from the reduction in hours of operation for the electric heater and from reduced heat gain into the refrigeration unit. Eligibility: To be eligible, ASH controls must be retrofit on reach-in glass door refrigerators with uncontrolled anti-sweat heaters. Strip Curtains for Walk-In Cooler/Freezer Measure Description: Strip curtains are barriers to air infiltration that, when added to walk-in coolers or freezer door openings, impede air mixing when the door is opened. How It Saves Energy: Strip curtains reduce the heat gain to a refrigerator and, hence, the need for mechanical refrigeration. Eligibility: This measure applies when strip curtains are added to walkin cooler and freezer door openings that previously had either no strip curtain or an ineffective strip curtain. Strip curtains must be installed in a grocery, convenience store, or restaurant and the curtain must be at least 0.06 inches thick. Special low temperature strip curtains must be used on low temperature applications. Night Covers for Display Cases Measure Description: This measure applies to the installation of covers on existing open refrigerated display cases. How It Saves Energy: Covers are deployed during the facility s unoccupied hours to reduce air infiltration and radiant heat gain and, hence, reduce refrigeration energy consumption. Night covers with small, perforated holes prevent moisture accumulation better than covers without perforations. High-Efficiency Evaporator Fan Motors for Reach-In Refrigerated Cases Measure Description: This measure refers to the replacement of existing shaded pole evaporator fan motors or permanent split capacitor (PSC) motors in reach-in refrigerated display cases with electronically commutated motors (ECMs). How It Saves Energy: ECMs below 1 HP are more efficient than permanent split capacitor (PSC) or shaded pole (SP) motors of similar size, meaning they produce the same airflow at a lower power input. ECMs also result in less waste heat added to the refrigerated case that must be subsequently cooled by the refrigeration system. Eligibility: This measure applies only to the replacement of functioning equipment. Auto Closers for Walk-In Cooler/ Freezer Doors Measure Description: This measure applies to the installation of auto closers on walk-in cooler and freezer doors. How It Saves Energy: Auto closers can reduce the amount of time that doors are left ajar, thereby reducing infiltration and refrigeration loads. Eligibility: An auto closer should be applied to the main insulated opaque door(s) of a walk-in cooler or freezer. This measure applies only to the new installation of an auto closer or on a door with strip curtains. The auto closer must be able to firmly close a door that is within one inch of full closure. Door perimeter must measure 16 ft. or more. Adding Doors to Existing Refrigerated Display Cases Measure Description: This measure applies to the addition of glass doors to open, medium-temperature, vertical refrigerated display cases. The doors that are added may contain anti-sweat heaters or may have doors without antisweat heaters (also known as zero heat or zero energy doors). How It Saves Energy: Reducing air infiltration into the refrigerated case by adding doors reduces energy consumption by reducing the heat gain into the refrigerated case and, hence, load on the compressor. Eligibility: This measure applies only to the addition of doors on medium temperature refrigerated vertical display cases. All savings are calculated based on energy savings due to reduced infiltration. Lighting or other case upgrades should be entered separately. Refrigerated Beverage Vending Machine Controls Measure Description: This measure applies to addition of control systems to non-energy STAR vending machines that shut down the refrigeration system and lighting during times of low usage. How It Saves Energy: Control systems reduce energy consumption by shutting off lights and refrigeration compressors during times of lower customer sales, while maintaining the appropriate temperature. Typical control systems contain a passive infrared occupancy sensor to shut down the machine after a period of inactivity in the area, while controlling the compressor to power on at intervals sufficient to maintain beverage temperature and long enough to prevent excessive wear and tear on the refrigeration components. Eligibility: Applicable equipment is any beverage machine containing refrigerated, non-perishable beverages. Refrigeration Rebate Worksheet 6 of 7
7 Refrigeration Rebate Worksheet Appendix Low or No Anti-Sweat Heater Doors Measure Description: Special freezer display case doors can reduce or eliminate the need for door heaters to prevent condensation. These super insulated doors are an option on new freezer doors, or can be retrofit on existing cases. How It Saves Energy: Anti-sweat heaters use electricity to heat doors regardless of the risk of condensation. Reducing or eliminating heaters saves electricity. Eligibility: Measure applies to new or retrofit freezer (< 0 deg F) display cases. New doors must have three or more panes. Total door rail, glass, and frame heater amperage must be 0.39 amps or less (@ 120 V) Evaporator Defrost Controls Measure Description: Electric defrost controls on walk-in coolers and freezers sense temperature and/or pressure to control the on/off cycle of electric defrost circuits. How It Saves Energy: When replacing timer-based controls, electric defrost heaters operate fewer hours, hence saving energy. Eligibility: Measure applies to the installation of temperature and pressure-based electric defrost controls on walk-in coolers and freezers evaporators in place of timer-based controls. Evaporator Fan Controls for Walk-In Coolers Measure Description: Evaporator fan controllers are added to evaporator fans to turn fans off when setpoints are reached. How It Saves Energy: Conventional evaporator fans operate continuously. Controllers turn fans off, saving fan energy and reducing waste heat which must be cooled by the refrigeration compressors. Eligibility: Measure applies to retrofit of evaporator fan controls in medium temperature walk-in coolers having no existing fan controllers. Measure does not apply to walk-in freezers.
