3 Clothes Washers and Dryers Compared to conventional models, ENERGY STAR certified clothes washers: Use approximately 45 percent less water and 25 percent less energy Save more than $490 over the life of the product Offer sophisticated wash systems to lift and tumble your laundry, lengthening the life of your clothing Incorporate advanced technology to get significantly more water out of your clothes in the final spin cycle Pair your clothes washer with an ENERGY STAR certified dryer to save even more Look for the highest Integrated Modified Energy Factor (IMEF) and lowest Integrated Water Factor (IWF) for the most efficient technologies ENERGY STAR certified clothes dryers: An average energy use reduction of 20 percent without sacrificing features or performance Innovative technologies like advanced moisture sensors, so that the dryer automatically shuts off when it detects that clothes are dry Reduced wear and tear caused by over-heating and over-drying clothes Steam cycle features that help to prevent wrinkles Look for the highest Combined Energy Factor (CEF), which is the model's energy efficiency rating. The higher the CEF, the more efficient the model is. Gas: Greater than or equal to 3.48 CEF Electric: Greater than or equal to 3.93 CEF Consider an ENERGY STAR certified heat pump dryer for even greater savings up to 60 percent more than conventional clothes dryers.

ENERGY STAR Most Efficient models offer an average of 15 percent more efficiency than standard models Can save you up to $270 over the next five years compared to a 15-year-old model Position your refrigerator away from heat sources such as ovens and dishwashers. Heat sources make your refrigerator work harder to keep your food cold. Leave a space between the wall and the refrigerator to allow air to circulate. This keeps the coils cooler so the refrigerator doesn t have to work as hard. If you have an older refrigerator in your basement or garage, it could be costing you money annually to run it. ENERGY STAR certified freezers: Use at least 10 percent less energy than the minimum federal standard Consume much less energy than older freezers a 1980s model can cost $157 in annual energy costs versus $35 for a new ENERGY STAR certified model Select a chest freezer if space allows. The door opens from the top, so less cold air will escape. Consider a manual defrost freezer, which uses half the energy of an automatic defrost model, but must be defrosted periodically to achieve the energy savings. Leave a few inches between the wall and the freezer to allow for air circulation. Place the freezer indoors, where extreme temperatures won t affect its performance, and set the temperature at 0 degrees Fahrenheit.

5 Room Air Conditioners and Air Purifiers Compared to conventional models, ENERGY STAR certified room air conditioners: Use about 10 percent less energy on average Save you about $70 per year Have advanced technical features that increase energy savings, like high-efficiency compressors, fan motors, heat transfer surfaces and insulation Remind you when the air filter needs to be checked, cleaned or replaced to help keep the unit operating at peak efficiency Run more quietly to make the room more peaceful Make sure your unit is properly sized. Room ACs remove both heat and humidity from the air. If the unit is too large, it will cool the room quickly but only remove some of the humidity. This creates a damp, clammy environment and wastes energy. ENERGY STAR certified portable room air purifiers: Use 40 percent less energy than standard models. Save about $200 in energy costs over their lifetime. Reduce indoor air pollutants like fine dust, pollen and other allergens. Seventy-five percent of allergists recommend air purifiers to their patients as part of an overall allergy/asthma treatment program. 7 Dehumidifiers Compared to conventional models, ENERGY STAR certified dehumidifiers: Use nearly 30 percent less energy but remove the same amount of moisture Can save you nearly $200 over the life of the unit Prevent more than 2,800 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions from being released Doors and windows should be closed while the unit is running. This will ensure that the space is dehumidified as efficiently as possible. Most dehumidifiers can be placed against walls, but if you do not have top-mounted discharge, make sure the dehumidifier is located away from walls and furniture. This helps air circulate more freely around the unit.
